The books are not biographies as such; rather they are designed to be succinct interpretative essays analyzing the major features of the career within the context of its own time. This book covers the career of Tsar Alexander I of Russia (1801-1825) in the context of his times. Alexander (the Tsar of War and Peace) spent much of his reign locked in a titanic struggle with Napoleon which led to the 1812 invasion of Russia. After Napoleon's defeat, Alexander promoted a new vision for Europe, ultimately embodied in the Holy Alliance (between Russia, Austria and Prussia). He was thus a dominant figure on the European stage as well as in the immediately Russian sphere. But he was a strangely contradictory character - he claimed to hate power but was a party to the coup that ended in the murder of his father, Paul 1; he claimed to \"love constitutions\", yet failed to implement the constitutional programmes written in his reign for Russia; he hated serfdom, but did little to ameliorate the lot of serfs; he wanted to be a reformer but died a reactionary.  Janet Hartley reviews his aims and actions, and finds him a more consistent figure than circumstances, and posterity, have allowed. The book sets Alexander in his full Russian and European context, and shows how circumstances restricted his freedom of action both at home and abroad. It establishes the main principles and considerations which governed his domestic and foreign policies, and shows them to have remained consistent throughout the reign and it argues that the ultimate significance of the reign lies in the alienation which began in Alexander's time between the educated elite and the imperial regime, which was to undermine all attempts to reform Russia right through to the Revolution.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49586078908689,"sku":"GOR002548578","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0582052718.jpg?v=1751293498"},{"product_id":"alexander-i-book-j-hartley-9780582052598","title":"Alexander I","description":"Much of Alexander's reign (1801--25) was spent in the titanic struggle with Napoleon. His defeat left the triumphant tsar the dominant figure in continental Europe, promoting a new political vision ultimately embodied in the Holy Alliance. But Alexander's chief bequest to Russia itself was the enduring, and disastrous, alienation of the educated elite from the imperial regime. This absorbing reassessment of his strange and contradictory character -- reformer in precept, reactionary in practice -- finds him more consistent than his reputation, but shows how circumstances fatally limited his freedom of action.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49596038807825,"sku":"GOR007383797","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50096675848465,"sku":"GOR006301364","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50332462022929,"sku":"CIN0582052599G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53008622551313,"sku":"CIN0582052599VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53367237738769,"sku":"CIN0582052599A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0582052599.jpg?v=1751293497"},{"product_id":"flexible-automation-in-japan-book-j-hartley-9783662072516","title":"Flexible Automation in Japan","description":"Much has been said and written about Japan's manufacturing prowess. Most ofthe comment comes from people who are merely visitors to the country and can be best cIassified as 'observers looking in from the outside'. Other views come from the Japanese themselves in which the double barrier of culture and language filters out much information that would be of real value to Western industrialists. Neither of these limitations apply to John Hartley, who has been resident in Japan for the past five years. He understands the culture, can speak the language and has extensive contacts at the highest level. Therefore, he is in a unique position to report on the Japanese scene and its activities in advanced manufacturing technology. This he has been doing on a regular basis to IFS magazines: The Industrial Robot, Assembly Automation, Sensor Review and The FMS Magazine. Most of the material in this book is from John Hartley's 'pen' and represents his most significant contributions on flexible automation in Japan to these journals over the last three years. It is augmented with a few other articles written by leading authorities on new technology in Japanese manufacturing industry.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52428272075025,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52428272697617,"sku":"NLS9783662072516","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783662072516.jpg?v=1759163625"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-j-hartley.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
