Given that British fascism was a phenomenon of the inter-war period, first making its appearance shortly after the Irish question had been constitutionally settled by the creation of the Irish Free State and the autonomous entity of Northern Ireland, it has been understandable that British historians should focus chiefly on developments in Britain. In the process, however, Northern Ireland as a site of fascist interest and activity has been largely overlooked; yet it engaged the attention of all the significant fascist movements, from Rotha Lintorn-Orman’s British Fascists and Sir Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists to the less significant Imperial Fascist League in the inter-war period, Mosley’s Union Movement in the post-war period and the National Front and British National Party during the period of the Troubles, together with smaller formations thereafter. In focusing on Northern Ireland, this study provides insights into the strengths and weaknesses of British fascist organisations throughout the twentieth century. It also demonstrates that the region was an extremely difficult terrain for those organisations to cultivate, whether they were supportive of nationalism\/republicanism or Unionism\/loyalism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49523133841681,"sku":"GOR013329356","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1786941775.jpg?v=1751184454"},{"product_id":"ulster-unionism-and-british-national-identity-since-1885-book-james-loughlin-9780861878451","title":"Ulster Unionism and British National Identity Since 1885","description":"Much has been written on the \"Irish problem\" and on the political manifestations of Ulster Unionism, but the history of Unionist ideology has been relatively neglected. James Loughlin aims to correct this and to discuss the relationship of Unionism to the idea of \"Britishness\", demonstrating that the central element of Unionism was its rejection of Irish nationalism and its firm embracing of British national identity, particularly with regard to the monarchy, and membership of the wider British nation. The author pays close attention to primary sources, especially local newspapers, and thus reveals the regional variations in the character of Unionism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49581970489617,"sku":"GOR010068747","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50964685848849,"sku":"GOR010009650","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0861878450.jpg?v=1751264957"},{"product_id":"ulster-question-since-1945-book-james-loughlin-9780333606155","title":"The Ulster Question Since 1945","description":"'Probably the shortest reliable and reasonably balanced study of the whole problem - as distinct from chronological commentary - available.' - Books Ireland The Ulster question has been one of the most enduring in Europe over the last 100 years. Taking shape as a specifically political issue when Gladstone introduced the Home Rule Bill of 1886, it has left the north of Ireland unsettled and emerged repeatedly as a complicating factor in Anglo-Irish relations. This major work of synthesis presents an up-to-date assessment of the Ulster question. Framed against the background of Ulster history since the early seventeenth century, the major factors in the development of the problem since 1945 are examined. These include the evolution of Ulster Unionism and the nationalist and republican traditions, the role of Britain and that of increasingly important external actors, especially the USA.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49600202473745,"sku":"GOR012946349","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0333606159.jpg?v=1751165447"},{"product_id":"ulster-question-since-1945-book-james-loughlin-9780333998694","title":"The Ulster Question since 1945","description":"This major work of synthesis presents an up-to-date assessment of the issues at the very root of the troubles in Northern Ireland. James Loughlin demonstrates how this relationship was shaped by the personalities of individual monarchs and by government policies in Ireland, especially during the nineteenth century when the state sought to quell Irish demands for independence. The study takes account not only of nationalist Ireland, but also of Ulster loyalism; the function of royal ritual and spectacle in engaging Irish popular opinion; and assesses royal allegiance within both the context of Government policies in Ireland and the Irish Viceroyalty, the British monarchy's surrogate presence. The analysis moves through to the present day, examining the monarchy's role in facilitating Anglo-Irish conciliation following the end of violent conflict in Northern Ireland.
