In this important new study he develops his analysis of the phenomenon of postmodernity. In a wide-ranging discussion the author examines the philosophy of Kant, Heidegger, Adorno, and Derrida and looks at the works of modernist and postmodernist artists such as Cézanne, Debussy, and Boulez. Lyotard addresses issues such as time and memory, the sublime and the avant-garde, and the relationship between aesthetics and politics. Throughout his discussion he considers the close but problematic links between modernity, progress, and humanity, and the transition to postmodernity. Lyotard claims that it is the task of literature, philosophy, and the arts, to bear witness to and explain this difficult transition. This important contribution to aesthetic and philosophical debates will be of great interest to students in philosophy, literary, and cultural theory and politics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49943287169297,"sku":"CIN0804720088A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007531352337,"sku":"NIN9780804720083","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51775604883729,"sku":"GOR009465424","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52105420407057,"sku":"CIN0804720088G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0804720088.jpg?v=1757413033"},{"product_id":"soundproof-room-book-jeanfranois-lyotard-9780804737494","title":"Soundproof Room","description":"One of the major cultural philosophers of our time addresses, in his powerful and allusive critical voice, Malraux's reflections on art and literature. This fourth volume in the series devoted to Jean-François Lyotard's writings on contemporary art and artists presents nine essays on general aesthetics and the theory of art. They are published in the original French along with English translations on facing pages. Most of these texts, preserved in the Lyotard archives of the Bibliothèque Littéraire Jacques Doucet in Paris, are published here for the first time. They do not reveal ‘another Lyotard' than the one whom we know through his major writings. Nevertheless, they cover the whole period of his production, from 1969 to 1997; and they make the development of his philosophy of art explicit. After the ‘libidinal' conception of art in his early writings, the ‘Kantian twist' of around 1980 places his view on art under the aegis of the sublime. These essays specify what, for Jean-François Lyotard, the hand of the painter means, as well as the gaze of the viewer, enamoured with resonant colours. This collection of essays, written between 1974 and 1977 in the middle of the time of Duchamp's rediscovery in France, was published by Editions Galilée (Paris) in 1977 and in English translation by The Lapis Press (Los Angeles) in 1990. This volume republishes the two versions face to face, including the drawings, diagrams and images of the original edition. Duchamp's TRANS\/formers reconstructs the Large Glass and Given, Duchamp's two major works that glorify the body in its topological conceptuality. The book introduces the question of the advent and the event of art, and invites us furthermore to consider the debt that philosophical commentary owes to the artistic gesture. This essay in philosophical aesthetics also includes reflections on the question of style, on the relation between the notions of transformer and performance, and on recourse to the machine in order to reveal the cunning nature of the machinations in play.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52453789368593,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52453789761809,"sku":"NLS9789058677907","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789058677907.jpg?v=1759369130"},{"product_id":"miscellaneous-texts-book-jeanfranois-lyotard-9789058678867","title":"Miscellaneous Texts","description":"TWO-VOLUME SET! Originally published in German, the book's original French text, written in 1992 as the result of a correspondence with Karel Appel, is here published for the first time. In his text about Appel, Lyotard reflects on the nature and function of color as it is used by the artist. Karel Appel, A Gesture of Colour brings together, in a special color section, twenty-five color reproductions of paintings discussed by Lyotard. The layout of this remarkable art historical survey of Appel's work emphasizes the bilingual texts.Lyotard presents Karel Appel's matterism as an offer of presence, presence deferred--it is the visual where every predicate is suspended, the visual touched, a gesture of color more than a property of color, an appearance at the edge of the abyss. Christine Buci-Glucksmann's epilogue situates Karel Appel, a Gesture of Colour within the whole of Lyotard's writings on art and his subsequent work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52661337817361,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52661338636561,"sku":"NLS9789058677563","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789058677563.jpg?v=1762267264"},{"product_id":"jean-francois-lyotard-book-jeanfranois-lyotard-9789058679512","title":"Jean-François Lyotard","description":"Order now the complete collection and receive the final volume for free! Lesson of Darkness is the second of a series of six volumes, bringing together the most important writings of Jean-François Lyotard (1924-1998) on contemporary art and artists. This second volume introduces forty-three poetical reflections and comments on the work of the well-known Californian painter Sam Francis (1923-1994). This edition reprints the English text published in 1993, which is no longer available, face to face with the previously unpublished French original. It also reproduces in full colour all forty-three paintings commented upon by Lyotard. In Lyotard's opinion ‘the work [by Sam Francis] pays homage to the visible marvel and bears witness to the visual enigma'. Lyotard discovers in these poetic reflections the subtle variety of meanings in the use of colour in Sam Francis's paintings.
