It takes the form of a comparative critique of three contemporary approaches: ordinary language philosophy, hermeneutics and critical theory, represented here respectively by Ludwig Wittgenstein, Paul Ricoeur and J rgen Habermas. Part I is devoted to an exposition of these authors' views and of the traditions to which they belong. Its unifying thread is their common concern with language, a concern which nonetheless reveals important differences of approach. For whereas ordinary language philosophers tend to treat linguistic activity as the ultimate object of inquiry, both Ricoeur and Habermas regard it as a medium which betrays more fundamental dimensions of human experience and the social world. Part I complements the exposition with a critical analysis of its central themes: the conceptualisation of action, the methodology of interpretation, and the theory of reference and truth. The author defends many aspects of the work of Ricoeur and Habermas, such as the emphasis on power and ideology, the strategy of depth interpretation, and the link between consensus and truth; but he argues that there are serious deficiencies and obscurities in their work. He proposes solutions to these difficulties and concludes with a sketch of a critical and rationally justified theory for the interpretation of action - a critical hermeneutics.
These are turbulent times in the world of book publishing. From Profumo to the cash-for-questions scandal, from Watergate to the Clinton-Lewinsky affair, scandals have come to play a central role in politics and in the shaping of public debate. What are the characteristics of political scandals and why have they come to assume such prominence today? What are the social and political consequences of the preoccupation with political scandal in the public domain? In this major new book Thompson develops a systematic and wide-ranging analysis of the phenomenon of political scandal. He shows that the rise of political scandal is linked to the changes brought about by the development of communication media, which have transformed the nature of visibility and altered the relations between public and private life. He analyses the characteristics of scandals as mediated events and he explains why mediated scandals in the political field have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Distinguishing between three basic types of political scandal, Thompson reconstructs the development of sex scandals, financial scandals and what he calls 'power scandals' in Britain and the United States, showing how scandals unfold and how they form part of distinctive political cultures of scandal. In the final chapter, Thompson develops an original theoretical account of political scandal and its consequences which highlights the connections between scandal, reputation and trust. This book is a path-breaking analysis of a troubling phenomenon which has become a central feature of public life in our societies today. It will be of great interest to students of sociology, politics, and media and cultural studies. It will also appeal to a wider readership interested in social and political issues.

It's the early 1950s. He broke into publishing in 1950 at age 39 by writing a fan letter to Jack Woolford, author of two books on writing, and a controversial author of sleazy fiction. Woolford encouraged Thompson to send him copies of his unpublished manuscripts. Thompson did, and Woolford immediately sold them (including his first novel, Male Virgin), beginning a professional co-authoring and publishing relationship that would last for several years...and get them both into trouble in the early with New York City police for writing indecent work.

But Thompson's many novels, racy at the time and tame by today's standards, were clearly a cut above what other authors were doing in the sleaze genre. He had literary aspirations and, surprisingly, often achieved them with his strong characters, rich writing, and provocative plots, which were psychological and cultural dramas mostly set in his native Louisiana.

He wrote one western, Gunman's Spawn as Ben Thompson, and it sold 250,000 copies, but the publisher went out of business and he wasn't able t break into the genre again, much to his disappointment. Although he wasn't known as a crime writer, many of his sleazy books were dark, hard-boiled noir tales, as well written and sharp as anything being published in that genre. But his work went unnoticed as noir, doomed by the marketing and packaging of his work (though plenty of hard-boiled novels in the 1950s and 60s had equally salacious covers).

Cutting Edge is proud to be reprinting most of his early, hard-to-find books in new ebook and paperback editions.

The book publishing industry is going through a period of profound and turbulent change brought about in part by the digital revolution.
Stanley Hauerwas, was declared by Time Magazine in 2001 to be 'America's best theologian'. This book explores his work on the Church as a community living holiness. John B. Thomson offers an accessible introduction to Hauerwas's understanding of the ethics, character, narrative, practices and politics of the Church in late modern societies. Hauerwas has many imaginative, challenging and creative things to say. This book seeks to make them more available to the wider Church and its clergy at ground level. Thomson introduces Hauerwas's work on the Church and critically explores the importance Hauerwas places on the church, its story and its politics as witness to the reign of God in the world. The second part of the book demonstrates how Hauerwas's thinking can illuminate congregational life, discipleship, Scripture, mission, theology and witness in fresh and encouraging ways.
In this major new work, Thompson develops an original account of ideology and relates it to the analysis of culture and mass communication in modern Societies. Thompson offers a concise and critical appraisal of major contributions to the theory of ideology, from Marx and Mannheim, to Horkheimer, Adorno and Habermas. He argues that these thinkers - and social and political theorists more generally - have failed to deal adequately with the nature of mass communication and its role in the modern world.
