From his experience and perspective as both a business and political correspondent, John Elliott examines how this came to be. At a time when there is a widespread clamour for change and for a new form of politics, he looks at how corruption has eaten into all aspects of Indian life and questions the decades of rule by the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, and suggests democracy provides a smokescreen for much that is wrong. He explores the impact of liberalization, traces the build-up of social unrest over corruption, women's rights, and the exploitation of land and the poor. He also reflects on the limitations of a hesitant foreign policy and looks in detail at why India's defence forces are so depleted.At the heart of the problem, he argues, is the 'quick fix' attitude known as 'jugaad' and the laissez faire acceptance of 'chalta hai' that together have eaten into the social and political fabric and heavily influence what India is, and is not, today. He uncovers a secrets 'M document' that mapped out the 1991 reforms, and reveals how was an unwitting spectator at a Pakistan briefing meeting for the 1991 Kargil war.Incisive and ambitious in its attempt to gather together the many strands that make up a controversial India narrative, Implosion is a timely contribution to the debate on nationhood, development, the exercise of power, people's rights and the changing demographics of a country facing a Tryst with Reality.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49541861572881,"sku":"GOR008516291","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50052210131217,"sku":"GOR013847088","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52151397056785,"sku":"NLS9789350297353","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9350297353.jpg?v=1781350250"},{"product_id":"salisbury-book-john-elliott-9781904965282","title":"Salisbury","description":"Salisbury is unsurpassed in Britain for its sheer elegance, although the wonders of the city are often obscured by the magnificence of the cathedral and its spire. The attack has been very much directed toward theory-based training which is accused of promoting progressive theories that are politically biased in favour of left-wing egalitarian ideology. The over all effect, it is argued, is a failure to raise standards. The New Right, aided and abetted by the tabloid press, wants to see the removal of teacher training from higher education, and for it to be unambiguously located in the schools, where it can be linked to the \"theory-free\" development of practical skills. Elliott and his contributors do not offer a defence of current practice, but do provide a rationale for the continuing role for higher education while at the same time moving toward a more experimentally-based professional preparation. They articulate in some detail that the practice of teaching is neither a matter of applying ideas derived from theory rather than experience, nor simply a matter of applying instrumental technical skills, learned on-the-job, to produce standardized and measurable end-products. Teaching is best viewed as a practical science in which the relationship between theory and practice is interactive. Practical skills are not simply technical in character, but structured by values and understandings of how to act consistently with them.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49602026078481,"sku":"GOR003810920","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0750701285.jpg?v=1751296194"},{"product_id":"linking-theory-with-practice-in-the-classroom-book-john-elliott-9781032711218","title":"Linking Theory with Practice in the Classroom","description":"Focusing on the professional learning journeys of practicing teachers and their tutors, this book takes readers through the experiences of teachers on the Developing Innovative Pedagogies through the Lesson Study module at the University of East Anglia.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49754269712657,"sku":"NGR9781032711218","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51017919168785,"sku":"NIN9781032711218","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52608683704593,"sku":"NLS9781032711218","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032711213.jpg?v=1750951705"},{"product_id":"on-the-trail-book-john-elliott-9781684568666","title":"On the Trail","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49937478648081,"sku":"CIN1684568668VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50399186321681,"sku":"CIN1684568668G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1684568668.jpg?v=1750864157"},{"product_id":"me-other-people-and-god-rare-book-john-elliott-1721723094alk","title":"Me, Other People and God","description":"1966. His theories about curriculum, curriculum development, pedagogy, teacher research, and research as a basis for teaching remain compelling and fresh and continue to be a counterpoint to instrumental and technocratic thinking in education. In this book, renowned educationalists describe Stenhouse’s contribution to education, explore the contemporary relevance of his thinking and bring his work and legacy to the attention of a wide range of students, teachers, teacher educators and others involved in education.  Stenhouse saw the primary aim of education as the development of individuality through a creative and critical engagement with culture. He was an early advocate of inclusive education and was committed to making available to all pupils an education that was challenging and empowering. For Stenhouse many of the problems of education stemmed not so much from its content as from the terms and conditions under which students were required to access it. Consequently he pioneered an approach to curriculum reform that stressed the quality of the educational process and the values that defined it, as opposed to ‘rational curriculum planning’, which stressed the pre-specification of measureable learning outcomes. Stenhouse devised the curriculum reform movement’s most ambitious strategy, ‘the process model’, and was its principal theorist. His idea of ‘the teacher as researcher’ lay at the heart of this strategy as the means by which the values that define a worthwhile educational process could be progressively realized by teachers in concrete forms of action within their classrooms and schools.  What marked out Stenhouse’s unique contribution to the field of curriculum was his distinctive conceptualisation of the relationship between the teacher (authority), the learner (autonomy) and the subject matter (understanding). Founded on his epistemological scepticism and forged in his encounters with expertly discerning teachers who valued and nurtured the intellectual independence of students, Stenhouse acquired an acute appreciation of the ways in which teaching enhances or inhibits, develops or displaces the potential for autonomous thinking of students. He changed the relationship between curriculum theory, educational research and teachers; placing teachers right at the heart of the curriculum development process and the teacher as researcher at the heart of teacher professionalism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51107997516049,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51108000203025,"sku":"NIN9780415664561","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52345952928017,"sku":"NLS9780415664561","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/041566456X.jpg?v=1751260342"},{"product_id":"elementary-geometry-book-john-elliott-9781021073242","title":"Elementary Geometry","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51192530206993,"sku":"NIN9781021073242","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1021073245.jpg?v=1750983585"},{"product_id":"philosophical-observations-on-the-senses-of-vision-and-hearing-book-john-elliott-9781108061711","title":"Philosophical Observations on the Senses of Vision and Hearing","description":"Although first to suggest the possibility of light frequencies beyond the visible spectrum, the natural philosopher John Elliott (1747–87) was better known at his death for his failed suicide in front of the woman he loved. Tried for attempting to shoot her, he was acquitted but died in prison awaiting trial on the lesser charge of assault. First published in 1780, this work was his most important. Contemporary science held that vibrations of the air were directly communicated to the optic and auditory nerves and passed on to the sensorium, while Elliot proposed, through experimentation upon himself, the existence of sensory receptors, each tuned to only a limited part of the spectrum of physical frequencies. This insight led him to postulate the existence of what we now know to be ultraviolet and infrared radiation, thus paving the way for further discoveries in human sensory perception.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51203942482193,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51203943137553,"sku":"NIN9781108061711","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52074223763729,"sku":"NGR9781108061711","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52403151929617,"sku":"NLS9781108061711","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1108061710.jpg?v=1751302040"},{"product_id":"don-t-be-a-victim-book-john-elliott-9780615766034","title":"Don't Be A Victim!","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51223951114513,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51223952949521,"sku":"NIN9780615766034","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/061576603X.jpg?v=1751393076"},{"product_id":"me-other-people-and-god-rare-book-john-elliott-1731323249mha","title":"Me, Other People and God","description":"1967. Building on the perspectives of teachers practising Lesson Study, the book delves into the design of a series of action research cycles to solve authentic learning and teaching problems in a variety of educational settings. In addition to theoretical tools and concepts on pedagogy, this book gives voice to teachers who become researchers while crossing the boundaries of school and university and the boundaries of theory and practice. The teacher researchers ask their own questions, test their hypotheses and work collaboratively with their school colleagues to experiment with teaching strategies aimed at learning with understanding. The chapters feature the voices of the pupils themselves and their experiences of learning within a range of educational settings and phases.  Written for teachers, leaders in education, teacher educators and researchers, this book shows that the combination of good learning theories and teacher collaboration help bridge the gap between theory and practice in teachers’ professional learning and enable learners to deepen their knowledge and understanding.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52590218150161,"sku":"NLS9781032711225","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781032711225.jpg?v=1761061625"},{"product_id":"bioethics-in-singapore-the-ethical-microcosm-book-john-elliott-9789814327114","title":"Bioethics In Singapore: The Ethical Microcosm","description":"This book provides an analysis of the ways in which the BAC has established an ethical framework for biomedical research in Singapore, following the launch of the Biomedical Sciences Initiative by the Singapore Government. The editors and authors have an intimate knowledge of the working of the BAC, and the focus of the book includes the ways in which international forces have influenced the form and substance of bioethics in Singapore. Together, the authors offer a comparative account of the institutionalisation of biomedical research ethics in Singapore, considered in the wider context of international regulatory efforts. The book reviews the work of the BAC by placing it within the broader cultural, social and political discourses that have emerged in relation to the life sciences since the turn of the 21st century. This book is not primarily intended to be a retrospect or an appraisal of the contribution of the BAC, though this is one aspect of it. Rather, the main intention is to make a substantive contribution to the rapidly emerging field of bioethics. Ethical discussions in the book include consideration of stem cell research and cloning, genetics and research with human participants, and focus on likely future developments as well as the past.Many of the contributors of the book have been personally involved in this work, and hence they write with an authoritative first-hand knowledge that scholars in bioethics and public policy may appreciate. As indicated above, the book also explains the way in which ethics and science -- international and local -- have interacted in a policy setting. Scholars and policy makers may find the Singaporean experience to be a valuable resource, as the approach has been to make the ethical governance of research in Singapore consistent with international best practice while observing the requirements of a properly localised application of universally accepted principles. In addition, at least three chapters (the first three chapters in particular) are accessible to the lay reader interested in the development of bioethics and biomedical sciences, both inside and outside Singapore, from 2000 (the year in which the BAC was established). Both scholars and interested lay readers are therefore likely to find this publication a valuable reference.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52684298977553,"sku":"NLS9789814327114","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789814327114.jpg?v=1762322721"},{"product_id":"play-intermediate-bridge-at-your-local-club-book-john-elliott-9798361562435","title":"Play Intermediate Bridge at Your Local Club","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53690628309265,"sku":"NIN9798361562435","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9798361562435.jpg?v=1781984244"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-john-elliott.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
