John Kleinig sets the issues in the context of a liberal democratic society and its ethical and legislative underpinnings, and illustrates them with a wide and international range of real-life case studies. Topics covered include discretion, capital punishment, terrorism, restorative justice, and re-entry. It is designed to achieve the important social ends of peacekeeping and public safety, and is empowered to do so using means that are ordinarily seen as problematic; that is, the use of force, deception, and invasions of privacy, along with considerable discretion. It is often suggested that the ends of policing justify the use of otherwise problematic means, but do they? This book explores this question from a philosophical perspective. The relationship between ends and means has a long and contested history both in moral/practical reasoning and public policy. Looking at this history through the lens of policing, criminal justice philosopher John Kleinig explores the dialectic of ends and means (whether the ends justify the means, or whether the ends never justify the means) and offers a new, sharpened perspective on police ethics. After tracing the various ways in which ends and means may be construed, the book surveys a series of increasingly concrete issues, focusing especially on those that arise in policing contexts. The competing moral demands made by ends and means culminate in considerations of noble cause corruption, dirty hands theory, lesser degradations (such as tear gas, tasers, chokeholds, and so on), and finally, those means deemed impermissible by the majority in Western culture, such as torture.
Deep friendship may express profound loyalty, but so too may virulent nationalism. God speaks in Leviticus to give Israel His instructions for the divine service. His prescriptions for the many kinds of sacrifices are attended by His promises for the forgiveness of sins and life with Him. Purity and holiness come to God's people through His indwelling presence among them. This commentary has several unique features. It explores how each chapter of Leviticus finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ--His earthly life, atoning death, resurrection, and ongoing ministry in the heavenly sanctuary now on behalf of His people on Earth. Using the method of ritual analysis, it examines the agents, enactment, and theological purpose of each of the instructions given in the divine speeches in Leviticus. The commentary on each pericope closes with a section on that specific text's Fulfillment in Christ. A hymn quotation then sums up the theology of that pericope as it applies to the Christian faith and worship life of the church.
Although law enforcement codes have a history that parallels most other recent occupational and professional codes, they have been almost completely ignored in the literature of occupational and professional ethics. And it is fashionable to pursue these debates in terms of the negative query "Under what conditions may life be disregarded or terminated?" John Kleinig asks a different, more positive question: What may be said in behalf of life? Looking at the full range of appeals to life's value, he considers a variety of issues. Is livingness as such to be affirmed and respected? Is there an ascending order of plant, animal, and human life? Does human life possess a distinctive claim, or must we discriminate between humans that do and humans that do not have claims on us? Kleinig shows that assertions about valuing life camouflage a complex normative vocabulary about worth, reverence, sanctity, dignity, respect, and rights. And "life," too, is subject to an assortment of understandings. Sensitive to the frameworks informing diverse appeals to life's value, this comprehensive work will interest readers concerned with the environment, animal rights, or bioethics. There are two approaches to punishment - retributive and utilitarian - and while some attempts may be made to reconcile them, it is the former rather than the latter which requires the reconciliation. Taken by itself the retributive approach is primitive and unenlightened, falling short of the rational civilized humanitarian values which we have now acquired. Certainly this is the dominant impression left by 'popular' discussions of the subject. And retributive vs. utilitarian seems to be the mould in which most philosophical dis- cussions are cast. The issues are far more complex than this. Punishment may be con- sidered in a great variety of contexts - legal, educational, parental, theological, informal, etc. - and in each of these contexts several im- portant moral questions arise. Approaches which see only a simple choice between retributivism and utilitarianism tend to obscure this variety and plurality. But even more seriously, the distinction between retributivism and utilitarianism is far from clear. That it reflects the traditional distinction between deontological and teleological ap- proaches to ethics serves to transfer rather than to resolve the un- clarity. Usually it is said that retributive approaches seek to justify acts by reference to features which are intrinsic to them, whereas utilitarian approaches appeal to the consequences of such acts. This, however, makes assumptions about the individuation of acts which are difficult to justify.
The philosophy of education is an important component of most education courses. The contributors to this volume struggle with this central question and its broader and narrower ramifications. Some argue that despite the problems facing the practice of incarceration as punishment, a professional ethic for prison officers and staff can be constructed and implemented. A reflective look at how juries actually function brings out a number of ethical questions surrounding juror conduct and jury dynamics: Do citizens have a duty to serve as jurors? Might they seek exemptions? Is it acceptable for jurors to engage in after-hours research? Might a juror legitimately seek to nullify the outcome to express disapproval of the law? The subject is often split into two traditions, one emphasising the use of analytic philosophy, the other engaging in radical social criticism. This book, first published in 1982, brings together the strengths of both traditions and takes stock of the debate. This study provides an interesting introduction to all the major philosophical issues in education which is different to many other works on the subject.

In This Volume

Leviticus may not be the obvious first choice for Old Testament reading for the faithful today, but in this original translation Rev. Dr. John W. Kleinig makes a case for the fundamental importance of the Levitical codes of purity and holiness even in today's church. God speaks in Leviticus to give Israel a divine service and a method to fruitfully receive God's holiness through the sacrificial rites. Kleinig explores how each chapter of Leviticus finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ and the present worship live of the church. Using the method of ritual analysis, he examines the agents, enactment, and theological purpose of each of the Levitical laws.

Features

Pastoral advice on the usefulness of Leviticus for missionary work in animist cultures

Emphasis on the sanctifying results of the ritual legislation, both in Israel and the divine service today

Extensive structural analysis of each of the Levitical rituals

Sectional Essays

The Manual of Offerings in Exodus 1-7:35

The Inauguration of the Divine Service in Exodus 8-10:20

The Manual for Purity in Exodus 11-15:33

About the series

The Concordia Commentary Series: A Theological Exposition of Sacred Scripture is written to enable pastors and teachers of the Word to proclaim the Gospel with greater insight, clarity, and faithfulness to the divine intent of the Biblical text.

The series will cover all the canonical books of the Old and New Testament, with an original translation and meticulous grammatical analysis of the Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek of each text.
