A number of settlements were established and named by French Normans following the Conquest. Many are even older and are derived from Roman placenames. Some hark back to the Vikings who invaded our shores and established settlements in the eighth and ninth centuries. Most began as simple descriptions of the location; some identified its founder, marked territorial limits, or gave tribal people a sense of their place in the grand scheme of things. With over thirty books to her credit, in genres ranging from children's writing to dystopic novels, she is as creatively diverse as she is internationally acclaimed. Her success, however, has been double-edged: the very popularity that makes her such a prominent figure in the literary world also renders her vulnerable to claims of being a 'sell-out', as she relates in her Empson lectures. \"The Open Eye\" negotiates the space between these positions, acknowledging Atwood's remarkable achievement while considering how it impacts on national politics and identity. The range of perspectives in this volume is stimulating and enlightening. \"The Open Eye\" begins with a focus on Atwood as she presents herself and is presented in Canada and abroad, and then proceeds to consider, more broadly, the intersection of life and literature that Atwood's works and persona effect. It offers fresh insight into Atwood's early writing, redresses the critical void regarding her poetry and shorter prose pieces, and provides a critical base from which readers can assess Atwood's most recent novels. A common thread throughout these essays is the recognition of Atwood's importance in the literary realm in general, and in Canadian literature more particularly.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51007029346577,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007031771409,"sku":"NIN9780776606132","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0776606131.jpg?v=1764842939"},{"product_id":"echoing-silence-book-john-moss-9780776604411","title":"Echoing Silence","description":"The North has always had, and still has, an irresistible attraction. They were groups of distinct tribal peoples who shared a common language and culture that thrived until they were confronted by an aggressive and expansionist Roman Empire set on conquest. This book traces their many migrations westward over the following centuries, and their advances into the Atlantic coastal regions, especially into countries like France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Britain and Ireland, largely replacing the Neolithic people that formerly occupied these territories. These migrations were rarely peaceful and as a result the Celts were widely regarded as warlike and inherently aggressive. The book describes the many inter-tribal and territorial confrontations that occurred during the Roman period. It explains the fighting methods, tactics and style of Celtic warfare as well as the warrior leaders like Boudicca, Brennus, Ambiorix and Vercingetorix, and others who emerged to resist Roman incursions. Despite fierce resistance, in the end, little of that great culture survived intact. Many of these tribes were savagely and purposely exterminated as a matter of policy, others were Romanised to become reluctant citizens of the Roman Republic, and only those whose territories lay in the northern and western extremities of the Empire – in the British islands, Ireland and Brittany in North-West France, avoided total subjugation. Several hundred of these ancient Celtic and other related tribes are included here. Although each had its own distinct identity, they shared a common culture with a widespread and unifying system of religious belief largely held together by Druids. The tribes described in the book include Gauls, Germans, Galatians, Lusitanians, Britons, Picts, Cambrians and Caledonians, among many others.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51627338694929,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51627338924305,"sku":"NGR9781399056861","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51647925190929,"sku":"NIN9781399056861","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1399056867.jpg?v=1751448517"},{"product_id":"mare-nostrum-book-john-moss-9781517038403","title":"Mare Nostrum","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51675864727825,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51675864924433,"sku":"NIN9781517038403","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1517038405.jpg?v=1751117544"},{"product_id":"lindstrom-alone-book-john-moss-9781771802604","title":"Lindstrom Alone","description":"\u003cp\u003eHarry Lindstrom is a Toronto-based investigator. Over five decades I've tried to illuminate our struggle as Canadians to find ourselves in words we could feel were our own, from colonial doggerel to postmodern discourse. Many of the essays here were originally published from lectures abroad and are difficult to access. Taken together they trace the evolution of English Canadian language, literature, and culture to the beginnings of the present century. An ongoing fascination with structural differences between writing by men and by women vies with my interest in language throughout, centred on such radically engaged writers as Robert Kroetsch, George Bowering, and, inevitably, Margaret Atwood. Critical analyses give way to what may be described as critical fiction, which in turn leads to fiction as fiction, before veering back to the personal. It would be true to say that the 600 year period following the Roman withdrawal from Britain until the Norman Invasion of 1066 was more ‘obscure’ than ‘dark’. It was a time of Angle, Saxon and Jute invasions of Britain prompted by mass migrations westward from Eastern Europe by warring tribes like the Goths, Vandals and Huns, by Vikings from the north, Moors from the east and Scotti tribes from the west. Most of these diverse peoples left scant written record of their history or culture, evidently more intent on conquest. What is known of them comes from Early Medieval sources, like the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, from religious Irish clerics and medieval writers like Bede, Nennius and Gildas who often relied on earlier unverifiable narratives. Later accounts by Henry of Huntingdon and Geoffrey of Monmouth were more akin to storytelling than history and were often lavishly interspersed with ancient myths and folklore.
