No other war changed the map of Europe so dramatically and more than 15 million people were killed. The dramatic political and social changes of the period were mirrored in the uniforms of the armed forces, and the contrast between pre-war Europe and 1919 could not be more apparent.  This unique illustrated book charts the developments in military uniform in fascinating detail: how the remaining reds and blues of 1900 soldiers died out in preference to browns, greys and greens. It also tracks the evolution of hardware and ammunition.  Evocative photographs of the struggle and stunning illustrations of the uniforms show in detail the changes, reforms and modifications of all the major powers, Great Britain, France, Russia, Germany and Austria-Hungary. This unprecedented volume is an incredible visual study of the uniforms of a pivotal period of military history, and of its context.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49523167559953,"sku":"GOR007140352","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49729892417809,"sku":"NGR9780754823407","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49853918544145,"sku":"GOR006475747","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50363941847313,"sku":"CIN0754823407G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53097836544273,"sku":"GOR012146528","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0754823407.jpg?v=1751451807"},{"product_id":"nelson-at-naples-book-jonathan-north-9781445679372","title":"Nelson at Naples","description":"During the wars which followed the French Revolution, France's armies turned on Britain's last ally in Italy, the kingdom of Naples. The French chased out the Bourbon royal family and established a republic, governed by scholars and philosophers. It lasted six months before an Army of the Holy Faith, under Cardinal Ruffo, counter-attacked and reduced the republic to a handful of castles in Naples itself. In June 1799 their republican garrisons agreed to surrender when Ruffo promised to save them from his fanatical mob by offering them safe passage to France.That treaty of surrender was signed and sealed when Admiral Nelson arrived in the bay with his British fleet. The admiral, urged on by Lady Hamilton, objected to the treaty's generous terms, then seemed to relent, permitting the republicans and their families to evacuate their forts. Once they were disarmed and had climbed aboard the waiting transports, Nelson struck and seized the would-be exiles. Hundreds of Neapolitan rebels now found themselves delivered up to a merciless court.This book asks whether Nelson was capable of such a betrayal. It makes use of accounts by Cardinal Ruffo, Lady Hamilton and Nelson himself, as well as by many others caught up in those brutal events, to tell the story of the atrocity committed in Naples in the summer of 1799. From all those experiences comes the drama. But to Naples alone belongs the tragedy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49525828321553,"sku":"GOR011811025","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51544497717521,"sku":"GOR014322790","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51544513413393,"sku":"GOR014322802","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52698823000337,"sku":"CIN144567937XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53175192518929,"sku":"CIN144567937XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/144567937X.jpg?v=1777715306"},{"product_id":"napoleon-options-book-jonathan-north-9781473897847","title":"Napoleon Options","description":"This compelling alternate history, brilliantly written by fourteen leading international authors, presents the great maybes of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars The Napoleon Options focuses on some of the pivotal episodes of these catastrophic wars, giving them a resounding twist, and explores in detail an alternative sequence of historical events. Rooted firmly in reality, and projected from entirely factual events, these dramatic and plausible possibilities are played out as though they actually happened in vivid and dramatic narratives.  The Napoleonic Options presents ten scenarios spanning the years between 1796 and 1815. These include a full-blown French invasion of Ireland, a very real danger in the 1790s; Napoleons successful conquest of Egypt and the Middle East; Junots victory at Vimerio; the Austrian invasion of Bavaria in 1809; the Russian success at Borodino, and what might have happened at Waterloo. Amongst the addition contributions in this new extended edition are alternative outcomes to the battles of Essling, Austerlitz, Fuentes d Ooro, and New Orleans.These captivating scenarios colourfully illustrate how alternate results might have radically re-shaped events and demonstrate the far-reaching consequences minor changes could have had upon the future course of history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49531928576273,"sku":"GOR008424338","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/147389784X.jpg?v=1750955620"},{"product_id":"killing-napoleon-book-jonathan-north-9781445683768","title":"Killing Napoleon","description":"An amazing story that is still largely unknown in the English-speaking world - the plot to blow up Napoleon, an early terrorist attack on Europe's most powerful man, with striking parallels to today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49565042868497,"sku":"GOR010002041","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50376073085201,"sku":"CIN1445683768VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50663314063633,"sku":"CIN1445683768G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445683768.jpg?v=1753687721"},{"product_id":"napoleon-options-book-jonathan-north-9781853673887","title":"The Napoleon Options","description":"Rooted firmly in reality and projected from entirely factual events, this collection of dramatic possibilities focuses on the far-reaching consequences of minor changes during the Napoleonic Wars that would have dramatically altered the map of Europe.'","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49600647135505,"sku":"GOR002634938","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51820930564369,"sku":"CIN1853673889G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52968269971729,"sku":"CIN1853673889VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53452103844113,"sku":"GOR003270975","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1853673889.jpg?v=1751186284"},{"product_id":"napoleon-s-army-in-russia-book-jonathan-north-9781844151615","title":"Napoleon's Army in Russia","description":"In 1812 Napoleon's magnificent army invaded Russia. Among the half a million men who crossed the border was Albrecht Adam, a former baker, a soldier and, most importantly for us, a military artist of considerable talent. As the army plunged ever deeper into a devastated Russia Adam sketched and painted. In all he produced 77 colour plates of the campaign and they are as fresh and dramatic as the day they were produced. They show troops passing along dusty roads, bewildered civilians, battles and their bloody aftermath, burning towns and unchecked destruction. The memoirs which accompany the plates form a candid text describing the war Adam witnessed. Attached to IV Corps, composed largely of Italians, he was present at all the major actions and saw the conquerors march triumphantly into Moscow. But, from then on, the invading army's fate was sealed and the disastrous outcome of the war meant that the year 1812 would become legendary as one of the darkest chapters in history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49665289912593,"sku":"GOR013535824","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50424804114705,"sku":"CIN1844151611G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50576378691857,"sku":"GOR005475480","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53270786507025,"sku":"GOR008061366","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1844151611.jpg?v=1750963242"},{"product_id":"napoleon-s-invasion-of-egypt-book-jonathan-north-9781398110311","title":"Napoleon's Invasion of Egypt","description":"In July 1798 Napoleon invaded Egypt, landing an army in the stifling heat of a North African summer. His invasion came as a shock to the Egyptians but also as a surprise to the soldiers onboard his armada, for they had not been briefed on a mission designed to win glory for their general and, or so it appeared, untold riches for their government. For these soldiers who followed in Napoleon’s wake, the campaign which followed promised neither fame nor wealth. What it did offer was forced marches, endless battles against fearsome warriors and the occupation of a land which mesmerised and repelled them in equal measure. Thousands of Frenchmen were to die in battle and as many again from disease ‒ including the plague.  Somehow, Napoleon managed to parley this costly adventure into a triumph and soon he would become emperor. Though the butcher’s bill was high, the campaign did shake the Ottoman Empire and began Europe’s love affair with Egypt. Jonathan North presents an astonishing history of Napoleon’s early ‘bartering of lives for glory’ based on the words of the soldiers and the many scholars and artists who took part in this exotic campaign.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49746296930577,"sku":"NGR9781398110311","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50169593594129,"sku":"GOR013194413","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1398110310.jpg?v=1764065064"},{"product_id":"death-of-joachim-murat-book-jonathan-north-9781399058407","title":"The Death of Joachim Murat","description":"The only English-language book on the fall and death of Joachim Murat and the final act in the drama of the Napoleonic Wars. Joachim Murat, son of an innkeeper, had won his spurs as Napoleon's finest cavalry general and then won his throne when, in 1808, Napoleon appointed him king of Naples. He loyally ran this strategic Italian kingdom with his wife, Napoleon's sister Caroline, until, in 1814, with Napoleon beaten and in retreat towards ruin and exile, the royal couple chose to betray their imperial relation and dramatically switched sides. This notorious betrayal won them temporary respite, but just a year later Murat engineered his own dramatic fall. A series of blunders took the cavalier king from thinking he had secured his dynasty to fleeing his kingdom. His native France did not welcome him, initially because Napoleon had not forgiven him, then, after Napoleon's fall following Waterloo, because the restored Bourbons were offering a reward for Murat's head. Fleeing again, fate brought him to Corsica where, welcomed at last, Murat turned to plotting the reversal in his fortunes he so felt he deserved. Murat soon resolved to bet everything on a hare-brained plan to return to Naples as a conquering hero and king. His aim was to take a small band of followers, land near his capital, organise regime change and reclaim his throne. In September 1815, he set off with a small band of followers. What happened next forms the core of this part-tragic, part-ridiculous story and a lesson in how not to stage a coup. Just five days after landing in Calabria, King Joachim was hauled before a firing squad and executed. There is a fine line in history between a fool and a hero. Had Murat succeeded then he would be lauded as daringly heroic but, alas, he failed, and his final adventure has been consigned to oblivion. This is unfortunate as the fall of Joachim Murat is the final act of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe as well as being a dramatic story in its own right. Based on research in the archives of Paris and Naples, Jonathan North's book aims to throw light on the fate of the mightily fallen Murat and restore some history to a tale that, until now, lay smothered under two centuries of fable and neglect.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49752705728785,"sku":"NGR9781399058407","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49807981019409,"sku":"GOR013788155","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50607210725649,"sku":"CIN1399058401VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1399058401.jpg?v=1750987321"},{"product_id":"world-war-i-history-uniforms-book-ian-westwell-9780754828808","title":"World War I: History \u0026 Uniforms","description":"This is a concise and authoritative account of the course of the First World War, with analysis of decisive encounters and landmark engagements. The streets of Paris were crowded with citizens. Some were shopping, some were eating and drinking. But others were plotting to murder the most famous and powerful man in France. They wheeled their improvised bomb into town earlier that day, and waited. Then, amongst the milling crowd, they saw the target. Despite knowing that the bomb would kill indiscriminately, the fuse was lit, and the enormous explosion wreaked havoc. The target for this early act of terrorism was Napoleon Bonaparte, who had seized power the year before and found himself the enemy of republicans and royalists alike. The terrorists belonged to the royal faction and although they failed to kill Napoleon, their atrocity hurled political violence in a new and terrifying direction; towards a now familiar place where civilian casualties would be collateral damage and where bombs in packed streets and squares would be the new conduit of terror. This book sets the scene with Napoleon's coup and follows the cell of extremists as they prepare their plans and devise a weapon that became known as the 'Infernal Machine'. After their attack, we follow the security services as they hunt down the perpetrators, baffled by the novelty of terrorism, as Napoleon uses public anger to launch a war on his opponents. Using first-hand accounts, trial transcripts and archival material - and with all the drama of a detective story - Killing Napoleon recounts one of the great crimes of its era, a story still largely unknown in the English-speaking world; and a precursor to the terrorist threats we know today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50299392917777,"sku":"NGR9781398122543","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51256792350993,"sku":"NIN9781398122543","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1398122548.jpg?v=1753687890"},{"product_id":"poems-of-prayer-and-inspiration-book-jonathan-north-9781664164819","title":"Poems of Prayer and Inspiration","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51234567618833,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51234569224465,"sku":"NIN9781664164819","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52128876790033,"sku":"NLS9781664164819","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1664164812.jpg?v=1750800480"},{"product_id":"poems-of-prayer-and-inspiration-book-jonathan-north-9781664164826","title":"Poems of Prayer and Inspiration","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51234567684369,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51234569486609,"sku":"NIN9781664164826","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144944316689,"sku":"NLS9781664164826","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1664164820.jpg?v=1751311401"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-jonathan-north.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
