Of those who argue against him, Schumpeter asks a fundamental question: \"Is it really artificial to keep separate the phenomena incidental to running a firm and the phenomena incidental to creating a new one?\" In his answers, Schumpeter offers guidance to Third World politicians no less than First World businesspeople. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Originally Published as Part I of Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy  1947].  Can capitalism survive? No. I do not think it can. Thus opens Schumpeter's prologue to a section of his 1947 book, Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy. One might think, on the basis of the quote, that Schumpeter was a Marxist. But the analysis that led Schumpeter to his conclusion differed totally from Karl Marx's. Marx believed that capitalism would be destroyed by its enemies (the proletariat), whom capitalism had purportedly exploited, and he relished the prospect. Schumpeter believed that capitalism would be destroyed by its successes, that it would spawn a large intellectual class that made its living by attacking the very bourgeois system of private property and freedom so necessary for the intellectual class's existence. And unlike Marx, Schumpeter did not relish the destruction of capitalism. If a doctor predicts that his patient will die presently, he wrote, this does not mean that he desires it.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49773165183249,"sku":"CIN0061928011G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50195931627793,"sku":"GOR007451399","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50492815671569,"sku":"CIN0061928011VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50977233109265,"sku":"GOR004441013","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50998931751185,"sku":"NIN9780061928017","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52687753412881,"sku":"NLS9780061928017","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0061928011.jpg?v=1751003961"},{"product_id":"capitalism-socialism-and-democracy-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9780061561610","title":"Capitalism, Socialism, And Democracy","description":"\u003cp\u003e\"Joseph Schumpeter's classic Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy explains the process of capitalism's 'creative destruction' -- a key principle in understanding the logic of globalization.\" -- Thomas L. Unprecedented in scope, the book was to provide a complete history of economic theory from Ancient Greece to the end of the second world war. A major contribution to the history of ideas as well as to economics, History of Economic Analysis rapidly gained a reputation as a unique and classic work.   As well being an economist, Schumpeter was a gifted mathematician, historian, philosopher and psychologist and this is reflected in the multi-disciplinary nature of his great endeavour. Topics addressed include the techniques of economic analysis, contemporaneous developments in other sciences and the sociology of economics. This inclusiveness extends to the periods and individuals who figure in the book. As well as dealing with all of the major economists from Adam Smith to Maynard Keynes, the book considers the economic writings of Plato and Aristotle, of the Medieval Scholastics and of the major European economists. Throughout, Schumpeter perceived economics as a human science and this is reflected in a volume which is lucid and insightful throughout.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50295666049297,"sku":"GOR006922330","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697027158289,"sku":"NGR9780415108881","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415108888.jpg?v=1750814074"},{"product_id":"aufsatze-zur-tagespolitik-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9783161459108","title":"Aufsatze zur Tagespolitik","description":"Nähere Informationen zu diesem Buch erhalten Sie direkt vom Verlag \/ For further information about this title please contact Mohr Siebeck","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50309395972369,"sku":"NGR9783161459108","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3161459105.jpg?v=1751252552"},{"product_id":"capitalism-socialism-and-democracy-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9781138129245","title":"Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy","description":"Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy remains one of the greatest works of social theory written in the twentieth Century. The essays, written between 1910-50 were primarily commemorative pieces marking the achievement of a celebrated economist. Those covered include: * Marx * Walras * Menger * Marshall * Pareto * Bohm-Bawerk * Taussig * Fisher * Mitchell * Keynes The appendix includes articles on lesser-known economists Knapp, Von Wieser; Von Bortkiewicz. With the exception of Marx, Schumpeter himself selected the ten main essays for inclusion in this volume and was personally acquainted with all but two of his subjects. Initially considering them unworthy for publication he relented in the face of public demand since the journals in which they originally appeared were difficult to obtain. When it first appeared the New English Weekly predicted that `for the next five to ten years it will cetainly remain a work with which no one who professes any degree of information on sociology or economics can afford to be unacquainted.' Fifty years on, this prediction seems a little understated.  Why has the work endured so well? Schumpeter's contention that the seeds of capitalism's decline were internal, and his equal and opposite hostility to centralist socialism have perplexed, engaged and infuriated readers since the book's publication. By refusing to become an advocate for either position Schumpeter was able both to make his own great and original contribution and to clear the way for a more balanced consideration of the most important social movements of his and our time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51250442109201,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51250443845905,"sku":"NIN9781138138612","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52664106451217,"sku":"NLS9781138138612","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1138138614.jpg?v=1751400452"},{"product_id":"theory-of-economic-development-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9780367705275","title":"The Theory of Economic Development","description":"Joseph Schumpeter (1883–1950) is one of the most fascinating and influential economists of the twentieth century, renowned for his brilliant and unorthodox insights into the nature of capitalism. His students include leading economists such as Paul Samuelson, Robert Solow and the former chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan.  The Theory of Economic Development is one of Schumpeter's most important books and the one that made him famous. He poses a fundamental question: why does economic development proceed cyclically rather than evenly? Turning prevailing economic theory, which approached economics as equilibrium, on its head, Schumpeter argues it is because economics is constantly transformed by its own internal forces. These forces are the 'circular flow' of economic life; economic development, characterised by disruption and innovation; and finally, the levers that push and pull capitalism including credit, profit and interest. These are all manifested in the ‘business cycle’, one of Schumpeter's major contributions to understanding economics and now a perennial feature of virtually all economics and business curricula. He is also the first economist to place the entrepreneur at the heart of capitalism, anticipating subsequent fascination with entrepreneurship in popular business and management writing. Schumpeter also lays the groundwork for his subsequent, highly influential idea of the 'creative destruction' characteristic of radical and rapid economic change.   The Theory of Economic Development remains a vital, magisterial account of economics and the nature of capitalism whose many insights remain highly relevant today.   This Routledge Classics edition includes a new Introduction by Richard Swedberg.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51280824238353,"sku":"NIN9780367705275","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52481263599889,"sku":"NLS9780367705275","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367705273.jpg?v=1751228419"},{"product_id":"journal-of-economic-history-v7-supplement-1947-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9781258686734","title":"The Journal of Economic History, V7, Supplement, 1947","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51385010422033,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51385011634449,"sku":"NIN9781258686734","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1258686732.jpg?v=1751082273"},{"product_id":"essays-of-j-a-schumpeter-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9781494088811","title":"Essays of J. A complete history of efforts to understand the subject of economics from ancient Greece to the present, this book is an important contribution to the history of ideas as well as to economics. Although never fully completed, it has gained recognition as a modern classic due to its broad scope and original examination of significant historical events. Complete with a new introduction by Mark Perlman, who outlines the structure of the book and puts Schumpeters work into current perspective, History of Economic Analysis remains a reflection of Schumpeters diverse interests in history, philosophy, sociology, and psychology. Major topics include the techniques of economic analysis, contemporaneous developments in other sciences, and the sociology of economics; economic writings from Plato and Aristotle up through the time of Adam Smith, including the medieval scholastics and natural-law philosophers; the work of Malthus, Mill, Ricardo, Marx, and the important European economists; the history, sociology, psychology, and economics of the period 1879-1914; and modern economic developments. Schumpeter perceived economics as a human science, and this lucid and insightful volume reflects that perception, creating a work that is of major importance to the history of economics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51828568162577,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51828568391953,"sku":"CIN0195105591VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51831541203217,"sku":"CIN0195105591G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53384185905425,"sku":"CIN0195105591A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780195105599.jpg?v=1752758776"},{"product_id":"ten-great-economists-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9780415110792","title":"Ten Great Economists","description":"Originally published in 1952, this seminal work is reproduced here with a new introduction by Professor Mark Perlman, a well-known Schumpeterian scholar. The essays, written between 1910-50 were primarily commemorative pieces marking the achievement of a celebrated economist. Those covered include: * Marx * Walras * Menger * Marshall * Pareto * Bohm-Bawerk * Taussig * Fisher * Mitchell * Keynes The appendix includes articles on lesser-known economists Knapp, Von Wieser; Von Bortkiewicz. With the exception of Marx, Schumpeter himself selected the ten main essays for inclusion in this volume and was personally acquainted with all but two of his subjects. Initially considering them unworthy for publication he relented in the face of public demand since the journals in which they originally appeared were difficult to obtain. The new introduction places this work in its contemporary context and highlights its importance for students unfamiliar with the original.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52336013967633,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52336014557457,"sku":"NLS9780415110792","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780415110792.jpg?v=1758161970"},{"product_id":"nature-and-essence-of-economic-theory-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9781412865340","title":"The Nature and Essence of Economic Theory","description":"Joseph A. Schumpeter was a monumental figure in the history and development of economics. This work brings together his brilliant lectures, delivered more than a century ago, in its first English-language paperback edition. Here, readers will discover Schumpeter's search for an economic science devoid of moral or political dogma.      The Nature and Essence of Economic Theory   works out what people should think of pure economics, what its nature is, what its methods and findings are, and where thought takes off from there. The book shows the limitations and weaknesses of nineteenth-century economics and how the field could be and was improved by establishing a fundamental differentiation between 'statistics' and 'dynamics'. To convey his arguments, Schumpeter uses certain axioms that form a consistent, self-contained system and show how sound economic science is based on facts and events rather than presuppositions or definitions.Schumpeter's larger aim, beyond a pedagogic tool, was to deduce changes in the market, trade, and exchange of goods and services. He defined the task of economy as the description of the system and its change tendencies. If that can be achieved unequivocally, without resorting to doctrine or dogma, then the field can be considered self-contained.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52475703460113,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52475704606993,"sku":"NLS9781412865340","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781412865340.jpg?v=1759842941"},{"product_id":"essays-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9781138523005","title":"Essays","description":"Ordinarily, the word essays is invoked at great risk by authors and publishers alike","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52653646774545,"sku":"NLS9781138523005","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138523005.jpg?v=1762211777"},{"product_id":"analysis-of-economic-change-1935-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9781162557656","title":"The Analysis Of Economic Change (1935)","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52747267801361,"sku":"NIN9781162557656","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781162557656.jpg?v=1763522148"},{"product_id":"imperialism-and-the-social-classes-1951-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9781169830073","title":"Imperialism And The Social Classes (1951)","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52747456217361,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52747456446737,"sku":"NIN9781169830073","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781169830073.jpg?v=1763527592"},{"product_id":"analysis-of-economic-change-1935-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9781169830509","title":"The Analysis Of Economic Change (1935)","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52747472863505,"sku":"NIN9781169830509","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781169830509.jpg?v=1763527867"},{"product_id":"imperialism-and-the-social-classes-1951-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9781169831735","title":"Imperialism And The Social Classes (1951)","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53514463641873,"sku":"NIN9781169831735","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]},{"product_id":"imperialism-and-the-social-classes-1951-book-joseph-a-schumpeter-9781162559292","title":"Imperialism And The Social Classes (1951)","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53515498750225,"sku":"NIN9781162559292","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-joseph-a-schumpeter.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
