It passes Cricklade, Lechlade and Eynsham before reaching Oxford, after which it flows on past Abingdon, Wallingford and Reading. From Sonning, the Thames goes past Henley-on-Thames, renowned for its regatta, to Marlow and then Cookham. Running through spectacular wooded scenery at Cliveden, it passes Maidenhead and flows on to Windsor, celebrated for its castle, and Eton, noted for its college. The river continues past Runnymede, where Magna Carta was signed, and Staines, where the London Stone marked the ancient boundary of London's jurisdiction on the Thames. Flowing past Shepperton and Sunbury, it reaches Hampton Court Palace and then Kingston upon Thames before arriving at Teddington Lock. Downriver of Teddington, the Thames becomes tidal.  The upper part of the Thames was the focus of an historical journey in the author's previous book, The Upper and Middle Thames from Source to Reading (2007). This second volume, featuring the middle and lower reaches of the non-tidal Thames, is a continuation of the journey downriver. In this latest Thames portrait, the evocative collection of 18th-century aquatints, 19th-century engravings and early 20th-century postcards will delight river enthusiasts and riverbank residents alike. Locks, ferries, bridges, inns and boats as well as village and town scenes are depicted, along with images of people enjoying themselves just 'messing about on the river'.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49527141040401,"sku":"GOR005255779","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860775837.jpg?v=1751185984"},{"product_id":"bristol-avon-book-josephine-jeremiah-9781860773624","title":"Bristol Avon","description":"The Bristol Avon rises in Gloucestershire, its Sherston and Tetbury branches uniting at the Wiltshire market town of Malmesbury. After flowing through Chippenham, Lacock, Melksham and Bradford-on-Avon, the river runs through the Limpley Stoke Valley on its way to Bath in Somerset. Well known for its architecture, and steeped in history, Bath is the first city encountered on the river's journey. Bristol, famous for its ships and seafarers, is the second. From there, the river passes under the Clifton Suspension Bridge and through the spectacular Avon Gorge to the Severn estuary at Avonmouth. Made navigable between Bath and Bristol during 1724-7, the Bristol Avon was linked to London in 1810, when the Bath to Newbury section of the Kennet and Avon Canal was completed. Formerly used by working craft, the navigation between the two cities now provides pleasure boaters with an enjoyable cruise. Bristol's Floating Harbour is a haven for both inland and sea-going vessels. In this nostalgic collection of well-captioned prints and photographs, the author examines life along the Bristol Avon over the centuries. Town and village scenes, as well as mills, bridges and locks, are featured, while the illustrations of craft on the river show rowing boats, sailing vessels, narrowboats, cargo ships, paddle steamers and pilot skiffs. Fascinating 19th-century engravings and early 20th-century postcards show Bristol as it was before the old city was bombed during the Second World War. This charming new study of the Bristol Avon will be of great interest not only to residents, river users and visitors to the area, but also to those who are researching their family history in the communities along its banks.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49527253795089,"sku":"GOR005989370","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860773621.jpg?v=1751425587"},{"product_id":"river-nene-book-josephine-jeremiah-9781860772573","title":"River Nene","description":"The River Nene rises in Northamptonshire and flows through the counties of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire before reaching its outfall at the Wash. It passes Northampton, Wellingborough, Thrapston, Oundle, Peterborough and Wisbech, flowing through flat Fenland country on its way to the sea. In this striking collection of captioned old photographs, the author unveils life along the Nene in bygone times. Illustrations of bridges, boats, locks, staunches and floods, depict the waterside localities, while lively town and city scenes contrast with peaceful village views. This nostalgic excursion along the River Nene will fascinate residents, river users, visitors to the area and those interested in the country's inland waterways.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49538813788433,"sku":"GOR002217127","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49646388117777,"sku":"GOR002485951","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860772579.jpg?v=1751185975"},{"product_id":"vale-of-evesham-book-josephine-jeremiah-9781860770500","title":"The Vale of Evesham","description":"The Vale of Evesham is well known for its fruit-growing and market gardening, which may have been inspired by Francis Bernardi in the 17th century. Though for centuries a busy navigation, with trows and barges trading up and downstream, not to mention the many who fished for salmon from their coracles of ancient design, few large towns grew up, nor heavy industry came to despoil its lovely landscape, market towns and villages. In 1782 William Gilpin's illustrated book Observations on the Wye encouraged a rich flow of wealthy tourists to embark on 'The Wye Tour' - an excursion, by boat, from Ross-on-Wye to Chepstow. That book was followed in 1797 by Picturesque Views on the Wye by Gilpin's contemporary, the artist and author Samuel Ireland, who described the river from its source on Plynlimon down to Chepstow, near its confluence with the Severn. The mood of the moment was the 'discovery' of the beauty of wild nature and the 'picturesque' so the Wye quickly attracted poets and artists such as William Wordsworth and J.M.W. Turner, with their pens and paints. Indeed, even Admiral Lord Nelson came to take 'The Wye Tour', by boat, in 1802. During the 19th century many further guides to the Wye and its delights were published, including those by Thomas Roscoe, Leitch Ritchie, Lousia Anne Twamley and Mr and Mrs S.C. Hall. All were illustrated and our present author has made very skilful use of the best of these early aquatints and engravings, interwoven with early photographs of the landscape, to illustrate her brilliant account of the Wye.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49548725551377,"sku":"GOR003003444","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52726346613009,"sku":"GOR006320509","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53601354285329,"sku":"GOR014976240","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/186077301X.jpg?v=1751313795"},{"product_id":"river-great-ouse-the-river-cam-book-josephine-jeremiah-9781860774171","title":"The River Great Ouse \u0026 the River Cam","description":"Rising in Northamptonshire, the River Great Ouse flows around 161 miles from its source to the sea. In its upper reaches, the river glides through meadows, passing Cricklade, Lechlade and Eynsham. Part of the upper river’s enchantment lies in the fact that much of the countryside has a timelessness about it as villages are often some distance from its banks. Leaving the ‘dreaming spires’ of the city of Oxford, the Thames passes Abingdon and Wallingford before running through attractive scenery at the Goring Gap, between the Berkshire Downs and the Chiltern Hills. From Pangbourne, the river flows past Caversham to Reading and its junction with the Kennet \u0026amp; Avon Canal. In this new study of the Upper and Middle Thames, 18th-century aquatints, 19th-century engravings and old photographs of the river and the settlements along its banks illustrate an historical journey from source to Reading. Ancient bridges, ferries, flash locks and pound locks are featured, plus centuries-old churches, mills and inns. River craft used for work and pleasure are portrayed, too. This collection will engage the interest of river users, ramblers and residents alike who enjoy the history of this most famous of Britain’s rivers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49584343253265,"sku":"GOR004953406","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51400188297489,"sku":"GOR014258649","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860774601.jpg?v=1751346436"},{"product_id":"river-avon-from-warwick-to-tewkesbury-book-josephine-jeremiah-9781860771163","title":"The River Avon from Warwick to Tewkesbury","description":"The River Avon from Warwick to Tewkesbury","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49603747905809,"sku":"GOR002931392","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860771165.jpg?v=1750866675"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-josephine-jeremiah.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
