In this book, Jules Lubbock examines some of the most famous of these pictorial narratives by artists of the caliber of Giovanni Pisano, Duccio, Giotto, Ghiberti, Brunelleschi, Donatello and Masaccio. He explains how these artists portrayed the major biblical events, such as: the Sacrifice of Isaac, the Annunciation, the Feast of Herod and the Trial and Passion of Jesus, so as to be easily recognizable and, at the same time, to capture our attention and imagination for long enough to enable us to search for deeper meanings. He provides evidence showing that the Church favoured the production of images that lent themselves to being read and interpreted in this way, and he describes the works themselves to demonstrate how the pleasurable activity of deciphering these meanings can work in practice. This fascinating book is richly illustrated, and many of it's photographs have been specially taken to show how the paintings and relief sculptures appear in the settings, for which they were originally designed. Seen from these viewpoints, they become more readily intelligible. Likewise, the starting point and the originality of Lubbock's interpretations lies in his accepting that these works of art were primarily designed to help people to reflect upon the ethical and religious significance of the biblical stories. The early Renaissance artists developed their highly innovative techniques to further these objectives, not as ends in themselves. Thus, the book aims to appeal to students, scholars and the general public, who are interested in Renaissance art and to those with a religious interest in biblical imagery.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49578793632017,"sku":"GOR013719534","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49584012493073,"sku":"GOR006111177","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50347995726097,"sku":"CIN0300117272G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51119827484945,"sku":"CIN0300117272VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53618000462097,"sku":"CIN0300117272A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300117272.jpg?v=1751451658"},{"product_id":"tyranny-of-taste-book-jules-lubbock-9780300058895","title":"The Tyranny of Taste","description":"How do countries acquire their distinctive features and appearance, their look or style? In 1940 he invented the combustion chamber for Frank Whittle's jet, without which it couldn't fly. Whittle later said, 'All subsequent engines stems from Mr. Lubbock's work'. This remains true. In 1942 he invented the first British liquid fuel rocket. This enabled him to convince Churchill that the V2 threat was real, in the face of acrimonious scorn from the scientific establishment including Lord Cherwell, Churchill's scientific adviser. He received no public recognition. This book aims to rectify the injustice done to one of the great British inventors and engineers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53099708023057,"sku":"NGR9781917458849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781917458849.jpg?v=1782872004"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-jules-lubbock.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
