Early in his career, in 1970, Whitten experienced his breakthrough moment: when he lifted a thick slab of paint off its support, he realized he could experiment within the physical, dimensional space of the paint itself. After that, all bets were off: " I cut paint, I laminate paint, I grind paint, I freeze paint, I boil paint," he said.

Approaching abstraction as scientist and mystic, Whitten probed the expressive and material possibilities of painting. This publication comes at a crucial time; after decades of neglect, the art world has just begun to take stock of what Whitten achieved in his body of work. Edited by Katy Siegel, one of Whitten's long-standing champions, this volume offers an intimate look at the artist in his element--in the studio.

Jack Whitten (1939-2018) was born in Bessemer, Alabama, and studied art at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he became involved in civil rights demonstrations. From 1960 to 1964 he studied art at Cooper Union, New York, falling in with the abstract expressionists of the day (Willem de Kooning was a particular influence and mentor). The Whitney mounted a solo exhibition of his paintings in 1974; in 1983 the Studio Museum in Harlem held a 10-year retrospective. In 2014, a retrospective exhibition was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, traveling to the Wexner Center for the Arts in 2015 and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 2015 and 2016. Whitten lived in Queens, New York, where he died on January 20, 2018.

A multifaceted, critical interpretation of celebrated American artist Jack Whitten's art and thinking over six decades, informed by the artist's extensive writings and personal conversations with the author. Arranged into themed 'rooms', it reflects a wide range of artistic attitudes and practices. Some artists depict or use real money directly in their work, while others explore its more abstract aspects, such as the way it circulates around the globe. Some make highly expensive objects from valuable materials or produce sculptural copies of luxury goods, but others go in the opposite direction, towards the amateurish and the handmade, to question the idea of monetary 'value'. Some present art as a usable consumer product like any other and make work that is almost indistinguishable from furniture or architecture, while there are some who produce art about the business of buying and selling commodities, including the commodity of art itself. But for others, however, art provides a means to explore and try out alternative possibilities that might one day challenge or even replace capitalism as we know it.
In Since '45, Katy Siegel explores how American social and artistic history has shaped what we know as contemporary art, and how American art has responded to the unique cultural conditions of the time.
A new, fully transcribed edition of the celebrated collection of Jack Whitten’s wide-ranging, perceptive writings When it was originally published in 2018, Notes from the Woodshed marked the first time that a book had been devoted to the writings of pioneering American artist Jack Whitten. Edited by art historian Katy Siegel, this new edition of the celebrated publication now presents a fully transcribed collection of Whitten’s insightful, searching writings, alongside a new afterword in the form of a conversation between curators Matilde Guidelli-Guidi and Zoé Whitley and artist Glenn Ligon. Widely renowned for his experimental approach to painting, Whitten often turned to writing as away to investigate, understand, and grapple with his practice and his milieu. Taking its title from the heading that Whitten scrawled across many of his texts—a term borrowed from the world of jazz that means “to practice in private”—Notes from the Woodshed is a fascinating, intimate insight into an artist at work.
Following Frankenthaler's own painting, as well as her influence on other artists, this volume traces artistic currents gathered under her name as they move outwards in different directions over time.
