Its origin can be traced to 13th-century Italy where the 14-line poem originated as a verse form to express stylised, courtly love. Petrarch, and later Dante, used the sonnet to express the changing circumstances of their times and the emerging Renaissance humanist vision. It was Sir Thomas Wyatt, stimulated by contact with Italian literary men while serving in the diplomactic service, who first began to translate and emulate the work of Petrarch. Edmund Spenser carried forward the development, substituting the Protestant-Platonic ideal of pure and virtuous for the defunct theme of courtly love. The Elizabethan sonnet reached its consummation in the genius of Shakespeare. With the exception of those of Shakespeare, the sonnet, as a verse formcapabale of expressing the mood and lyrical outlook of any age, has, in the opinion of the author, suffered undeserved neglect. In this selection of over 150 sonnets, Kenneth Verity shows how successfully this verse form can be used to address the issues of the 21st century, where the stress of modern living has cut the individual off from the harmony of his being with the order of the universe. As Shakespeare put it in \"The Merchant of Venice\": \"Such harmony is in immortal souls\".","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49535430590737,"sku":"GOR005105510","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0856832219.jpg?v=1751044056"},{"product_id":"breathing-with-the-mind-book-kenneth-verity-9781852304409","title":"Breathing with the Mind","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49569878802705,"sku":"GOR003614293","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50125695353105,"sku":"CIN1852304405G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1852304405.jpg?v=1750899787"},{"product_id":"on-the-nature-of-poetry-book-kenneth-verity-9780856832468","title":"On the Nature of Poetry","description":"Almost a library in one volume, this unusual book, written by an accomplished poet, examines the 4000 year old phenomenon of poetry. It explains the underlying power of this art form and how its effect is exerted over human hearts and understanding. Since the Greeks at least, poetry has been accorded pre-eminence in the arts. Poetry's aesthetic supremacy and inherent mystery has made it the foremost form of expression when human beings need to say something important in a special way. Poetry has been defined as the best words in the best order. In poetry, the author suggests, the eternal intersects the everyday - it has been said that poetry is the language in which man explores his own amazement. The author shows how poetry has provided a vehicle for inspiration and fresh ways of thinking and interpreting the perennial questions of the human race, and makes clear that poetry 'works' because it acknowledges the universality of human psychology, and because it unites emotion with reason and tempers imagination with understanding. Over 200 poets are quoted and the work of 10 master poets is critically analysed and assessed. The major factors involved in translating poetry are discussed, particularly the difficulty of conveying the meaning without losing the spirit. The central features of inspiration and creativity are elucidated. The unbroken stream of poetry carries resonances of the growth and decay of civilisations, the vicissitudes of wars, the effects of migrations and trading, the influences of religious belief. The author considers, from his own experience, that poetry remains peerless in evaluating and articulating the riches of the human spirit. Kenneth Verity is the author of three books of sonnets, The Spacious Mirror, The Unseen Reflection and Sonnets, two books of haiku Awareness beyond Mind and Breathing with the Mind. Of his first book of sonnets, Kingsley Amis wrote 'They belong within the corpus of English poetry'. Verity writes, 'The intention of this book is to examine and analyse the essential nature of the phenomenon we call poetry; to seek an understanding of the power this art form exerts over mind and heart; to comprehend its potency; and to explain its perennial ability to command the respect of mankind'.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49579229249809,"sku":"GOR007007234","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0856832464.jpg?v=1750915390"},{"product_id":"awareness-beyond-mind-book-kenneth-verity-9781852308193","title":"Awareness Beyond Mind","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49621424865553,"sku":"GOR001758755","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49648823795985,"sku":"GOR005022805","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50392596676881,"sku":"CIN1852308192G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53577892921617,"sku":"CIN1852308192VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1852308192.jpg?v=1751249389"},{"product_id":"on-the-nature-of-poetry-an-appraisal-and-investigation-of-the-art-which-for-4000-rare-book-kenneth-verity-1661430142mhr","title":"On the Nature of Poetry: An Appraisal and Investigation of the Art Which for 4000 Years Has Distilled the Spoken Thoughts of Mankind","description":"2007.
