Conceived in the mid-1930s by Laura Riding, \"Epilogue: A Critical Summary\" was originally to be called \"The Critical Vulgate\", a title suggesting that the thematic concerns would go beyond the literary, attempting to discover, in a secular spirit reminiscent of Voltaire's, the truth regarding all sorts of subjects, from God down. In 1935 \"The Idea of God\" led off the experiment of \"Epilogue\". The effort was to be encyclopaedic, and in this respect the project foreshadows Riding's later life-work, the massive \"Rational Meaning\" which she undertook with her husband Shuyler B. Jackson and which detained her until her death. Like much of the work she initiated, \"Epilogue\" is a collaboration involving as key figures Riding, Graves and others. The original volumes, published by Seizin Press (Majorca) and Constable jointly, are scarce. Quite apart from their intrinsic interest, they offer rich source material for the two authors. Laura (Riding) Jackson never reprinted her \"Epilogue\" work, while Graves republished some of his, in revised form. This selection alerts readers to a rigorous, impassioned and remarkably alive creative and critical moment.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49645291077905,"sku":"GOR006278459","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857545184.jpg?v=1751186011"},{"product_id":"a-survey-of-modernist-poetry-rare-book-laura-riding-1704896859iev","title":"A Survey of Modernist Poetry","description":"1929. In \"A Survey of Modernist Poetry\", Laura Riding and Robert Graves produce a contemporary reaction to the early experimentation of writers such as Eliot, Pound and E.E.Cummings. Their close critical readings are deployed, along the way, in an engagement with Shakespeare's punctuation, issues of populism and elitism and an attempt to define - perhaps to invent - that elusive creature known as 'the common reader'. The Survey contains groundbreaking readings of modern poems and movements and is an illuminating and polemical account of the beginnings of modernism. It is an important resource but also a valuable critical text in the reception and development of modernist poetry in English. \"A Pamphlet Against Anthologies\" is an entertaining tirade against the perceived iniquities of the trade anthology. A statement of poetic integrity, it poses awkward questions about the production and consumption of art in the mass markets of twentieth and twenty-first centuries.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50401586348305,"sku":"CIN1857545680G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50558287642897,"sku":"GOR013108892","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51730570445073,"sku":"GOR014381885","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857545680.jpg?v=1750996374"},{"product_id":"experts-are-puzzled-book-laura-riding-9781937027865","title":"Experts Are Puzzled","description":"Fiction. Edited by George Fragopoulos. Introduction by Mark Jacobs and George Fragopoulos. A nearly impossible text to categorize--is it a collection of short stories, prose poems, manifestos or something else entirely?--EXPERTS ARE PUZLED is one of Laura Riding's earliest and most intense examinations of poetry's and language's relationship to truth. In essayistic examinations such as the titular piece, Introduction to a book on Money, and An Address to America, Riding seeks to articulate a higher, more poetic notion of truth and truth telling, a project that would later result in her famous renunciation of poetry itself. As such, EXPERTS ARE PUZLED stands as an essential text in better understanding why it is that Riding rejected poetry and stopped writing it altogether in the late 1930s. While excerpts and selections from EXPERTS have been published before, most notably in Riding's \u003cem\u003eThe Progress of Stories\u003c\/em\u003e, the entirety of the collection has not appeared in print since its initial publication by Jonathan Cape in 1930.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50403183132945,"sku":"CIN1937027864G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1937027864.jpg?v=1750771099"},{"product_id":"anarchism-is-not-enough-book-laura-riding-9780520213944","title":"Anarchism Is Not Enough","description":"Anarchism is Not Enough is a manifesto against systematic thinking, a difficult book by a famously difficult writer. For the scope of its critical imagination, it is the most radical work of Laura Riding's early period. This period extends from the end of 1925, when she left America for Europe and Robert Graves, to 1939, the year she returned to America, renounced any further writing of poetry, and soon after married Schuyler Jackson. Published in 1928, when Riding was twenty-seven, Anarchism is a kind of early autobiographia literaria. Long out of print and now available for the first time in paperback, this is one of the most imaginative and daring works of literary theory ever written by a modernist figure. Lisa Samuels's edition sets the work in its historical context and elucidates its central intellectual difficulties. Her introduction and notes are a valuable aid to an understanding of Riding's work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50504061550865,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50504061747473,"sku":"GOR012986996","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53521167646993,"sku":"NLS9780520213944","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0520213947.jpg?v=1751230234"},{"product_id":"telling-book-laura-riding-9781857547740","title":"The Telling","description":"For Laura (Riding) Jackson, two decades of intense poetic dedication finally revealed poetry itself to be a 'usurping occupant'. It was a long time before she felt ready to publish this post-poetic testament, the book she called a 'personal evangel'. The work of a poet who renounced poetry in mid-life because it hampered the way to something 'further' in language, \"The Telling\" stands central to her work and unique in the intellectual history of the twentieth century. 'It is a work of unusual beauty,' writes Michael Schmidt in his introduction, 'in part because of its tremendous optimism about the human intellect and about the power of language. That optimism requires of each individual a discipline almost impossible to achieve, a continuous consciousness of self, of self in relation, and of self in language. Second nature, nuance, recklessness, spontaneity, all become forms of dereliction. If we wish to move beyond \"diffuse greed\", we can do so, but we must be prepared to privilege the \"human-souled being\" over the \"self-claiming self\".' The ideas are challenging but not obscure. The language-quality of \"The Telling\" is necessarily distinctive because the work is trying to say something not said before and the language of that saying needs to be precise and unambiguous. So too must be the author's vision of human fulfilment as attainable through truth-speaking. The core-part of the book, in 62 numbered sections, is followed by a 'Preface for a Second Reading', and in turn by the confiding 'Some After-Speaking: Private Words'. This concentric series of extending considerations - linguistic, literary, social, spiritual - completes the book, though its thought lies open to further exploration.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50914009448721,"sku":"GOR002472412","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857547748.jpg?v=1750803687"},{"product_id":"poet-book-laura-riding-9781842331613","title":"Poet","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53029577064721,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53029577130257,"sku":"GOR011979999","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781842331613.jpg?v=1768569028"},{"product_id":"survey-of-modernist-poetry-book-laura-riding-9781025245966","title":"A Survey of Modernist Poetry","description":"\u003cp\u003e\"A survey of modernist poetry\" by renowned authors Robert Graves and Laura Riding stands as a seminal work in literary criticism, offering an indispensable examination of 20th-century poetic innovation.
