But on the first day of class, Levinger became the student instead of the teacher when a young man named Fernando introduced himself by saying, My father was killed when I was four months old. I am a survivor of the Guatemala civil war. Shocked, Levinger's first thought was, What war? Beginning in 1960, fighting between the Guatemalan military and guerrilla fighters raged across this Central American country. By 1980, this violence--which began with a CIA-backed coup and efforts by the United Fruit Company to protect its financial interests--turned into the massacre of Maya people in every corner of Guatemala. By the time peace accords were signed in 1996, over two hundred thousand Maya people had been murdered, disappeared,or forced into exile by their own government. Levinger's students had been young children when these atrocities were committed. Many lost their parents. Many had relatives who disappeared. All had suffered the loss of their culture, their family ties, their sense of safety, their personal identities. As a clinical social worker, Levinger believes in the importance of bearing witness, of speaking the unspeakable out loud. After her initial trip, she returned to Guatemala, this time with a tape recorder and a mission: to record the testimonies of her students, to document their enduring love for their Maya culture, and to honor their unflagging search for truth. In What War? Levinger brings us stories, told in the spare and eloquent language of truth-tellers, reminding us all that the true cost of war is borne by the survivors. And so is the hope for peace. I only once or twice experienced any one speaking as openly about The Violence, la violencia, as do these young people. Their candor is extraordinary and gives me hope. --Staughton Lynd, author, historian, peace activist Laurie Levinger is a retired psychotherapist who lives and writes in Vermont.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50396017819921,"sku":"CIN1610976320G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51039527534865,"sku":"NIN9781610976329","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52425520873745,"sku":"NLS9781610976329","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1610976320.jpg?v=1750863479"},{"product_id":"cual-guerra-book-laurie-e-levinger-9781620320792","title":"?Cual Guerra?","description":"Description: En Cu l Guerra? Civil war raged in Spain as the fascist army of Francisco Franco sought to overthrow the democratically elected Republic. Levinger, a dedicated idealist, made the commitment to go to a foreign country to fight fascism. Love and Revolutionary Greetings is placed in the historical context of the 1930s, when freedom everywhere was threatened by Franco, Hitler, and Mussolini. The book is based on Sam Levinger's letters, poems, and stories that he sent home from Spain, interspersed with those of his mother, Elma Levinger. Told in the words of a soldier son and his mother, as well as other members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, the book offers an eyewitness account of the hardships and the politics of the times. Men and women from all over the world went to Spain to fight with the International Brigade to defend Spanish democracy. Twenty-eight hundred men and women from the United States joined the International Brigade. Sam Levinger was one of them. Sam died in Spain when he was twenty years old. The author, Sam Levinger's niece, traveled to Spain to search for his unmarked grave. Love and Revolutionary Greetings tells the emotional and political story of American involvement in the Spanish Civil War in the language of people who lived it. Endorsements: The story of the 2,800 Americans who defended the Spanish Republic against fascism in the 1930s has sparked many compelling accounts, but few as moving as this one. Laurie Levinger has unearthed a cache of stunningly powerful testimony, most of which has never been published, and carefully crafted a . . . multi-voiced tapestry that takes us from the Depression years in Columbus, Ohio, to the Spanish trenches. --Sebastiaan Faber Chair, Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives Levinger's book is a compelling collage in which love and memory illuminate fascinating fragments of American social history. It tells of twenty-year-old Sam Levinger, who died in 1937 fighting Franco's Nazi-backed rebels in Spain . . . Sam, the gifted, writerly boy who lives again now in Levinger's book through his letters home-their crystalline prose, shot through with wry humour, hints too at the sparse intensity of a soldier's experience. -Helen Graham Author of The War and Its Shadow About the Contributor(s): Laurie Levinger is a freelance writer. It's a family photo album; each snapshot tells a mini-story. You're sure you understand what you're seeing, but it's not until you've finished flipping through the entire album that you develop an intimate sense of who this family is. You thought you knew them, understood all the subtleties and dynamics, but, change the angle, soften the focus, flip the page; there's a different story. Jesse, the narrator, is on a search. She's trying to identify the dropped stitches in her own life, to name them, and reknit them into a whole. As the book opens Jesse's mother is dying, but Jesse and her father find it impossible to face the inevitable. Turn the page: Jesse desperately wants to have children; she's a lesbian; she has to figure out how to make that happen. Later we meet her children, Noah and Sophie; we're introduced to Anna, who becomes Jesse's spouse, before the world has caught up with the concept. We meet grandparents, and learn that in Jesse's family writing is revered, but infused with unspoken taboos. And we meet her brothers who each has a particular place to stand in the family portrait. Jesse has a story to tell, and she isn't sure it's safe to tell it. Loss and grief, being silenced and silencing oneself, becoming frozen, and the heat-generating, melting power of love, these are the themes in Just a Dropped Stitch. The importance of naming, the redemption that comes from breaking silences, these are the interwoven threads. Meanwhile, keep flipping through the album and you see snapshots of everyday life: hiking with Noah, shopping with Sophie for a bat mitzvah dress. And Jesse's mother, who refuses to completely disappear, makes a surprise appearance, embarrassing Jesse at a job interview. As we close the album, we're keeping vigil with Jesse in the hospital while she waits to hear whether she has the disease that killed her mother. And, then, there's a final snapshot: a handmade Chinese box, with sides that drop open, revealing a blood-red interior where there's nothing to hide. How do you tell a life story, with all the myriad stories, the secrets, the multiple selves that go into it? Laurie Levinger has written her way to an answer beautiful and true, fierce and tender, redemptive and heart-rending. In the process she's found a form and a voice that can carry the full range of a woman's--daughter's, mother's, sister's, lover's--experience. Listen. --Ellen Lesser author of The Shoplifter's Apprentice, The Other Woman, and The Blue Streak Once I began reading, I could not stop. It is a beautifully written memoir, and more: a provocative revelation about love, family, the death of a generation impacted by holocaust, and the politics of fear and acceptance. It needs to be read --Laura Simms storyteller and author of The Robe of Love Laurie Levinger takes us from one stage of adulthood with all it's suffering and joys to another so seamlessly that we are only gradually aware of the giant steps she has taken to claim her voice. There is a camaraderie of spirit in these stories that weaves the reader in. She bravely raises difficult issues, looks at them squarely, with intelligence and compassion. --Charlotte Houde Quimby New Hampshire State Representative Laurie Levinger is a retired psychotherapist who lives and writes in Vermont.
