In its published form it contains 1,933 songs, available in eight volumes arranged thematically. This selection for performers contains 150 songs from the main collection, and takes as its focus 28 of the singers from whom the songs were originally collected. All the singers lived at (or had a connection with) a range of locations in North-East Scotland, and biographical information on them has been gleaned from field research and archives. The book is designed primarily for performers: it is organized by singer, with editorial notes on each song. The selection covers a range of themes, and includes both folksongs and ballads. The book will be of interest to traditional singers, schools and universities that teach Scots song, and those interested in the culture and social history of North-East Scotland. A CD of a selection of the songs accompanies the book.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49577722183953,"sku":"GOR005432624","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50497664090385,"sku":"GOR013973197","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53411210952977,"sku":"GOR014913050","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1906566011.jpg?v=1750769759"},{"product_id":"scottish-fairy-belief-book-lizanne-henderson-9781904607588","title":"Scottish Fairy Belief","description":"The authorities told folk what they ought to believe, but what did they really believe? Throughout Scottish history, people have believed in fairies. They were a part of everyday life, as real as the sunrise, and as incontrovertible as the existence of God. While fairy belief was only a fragment of a much larger complex, the implications of studying this belief tradition are potentially vast, revealing some understanding of the worldview of the people of past centuries. This book, the first modern study of the subject, examines the history and nature of fairy belief, the major themes and motifs, the demonising attack upon the tradition, and the attempted reinstatement of the reality of fairies at the end of the seventeenth century, as well as their place in ballads and in Scottish literature.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49736403878161,"sku":"NGR9781904607588","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53240290410769,"sku":"GOR009420654","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1904607586.jpg?v=1750964449"},{"product_id":"fantastical-imaginations-book-lizanne-henderson-9781906566029","title":"Fantastical Imaginations","description":"In Scotland the subject of the supernatural has been largely ignored by mainstream historians and academics, who considered it to be irrelevant or trivial. This collection of essays, by some of the foremost commentators in the field, seeks to redress the balance by tackling such topics as prophecy, astrology, witchcraft, fairy belief, amulets and charming. Other issues include the role of the supernatural in Enlightenment Scotland, in almanacs, in Gaelic society, and in literature, folktale and legend. This is a multi-disciplinary volume, with contributions utilizing historical, literary and folkloristic methodologies and ranging in time from the late medieval period to the present day. It explores the perennial fascination of how people in the past viewed their world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49758590435601,"sku":"GOR008167056","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/190656602X.jpg?v=1750726038"},{"product_id":"scottish-fairy-belief-book-lizanne-henderson-9781862321908","title":"Scottish Fairy Belief","description":"Throughout Scottish history, many people believed in fairies. The late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries were undoubtedly a period of transition and redefinition of what constituted the supernatural, at the interface between folk belief and the philosophies of the learned. For the latter the eradication of such beliefs equated with progress and civilization but for others, such as the devout, witch belief was a matter of faith, such that fear and dread of witches and their craft lasted well beyond the era of the major witch-hunts. This study seeks to illuminate the distinctiveness of the Scottish experience, to assess the impact of enlightenment thought upon witch belief, and to understandhow these beliefs operated across all levels of Scottish society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52337519853841,"sku":"NLS9781349593132","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53495244816657,"sku":"NIN9781349593132","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781349593132.jpg?v=1758166911"},{"product_id":"witchcraft-and-folk-belief-in-the-age-of-enlightenment-book-lizanne-henderson-9780230294387","title":"Witchcraft and Folk Belief in the Age of Enlightenment","description":"Taking an interdisciplinary perspective, Witchcraft and Folk Belief in the Age of Enlightenment represents the first in-depth investigation of Scottish witchcraft and witch belief post-1662, the period of supposed decline of such beliefs, an age which has been referred to as the 'long eighteenth century', coinciding with the Scottish Enlightenment.
