Il progetto, pero apparve subito alquanto pretenzioso e in definitiva impossibile da attuare. L'Imperatore Costante II decise cos  di intervenire militarmente guidando lui stesso una spedizione in Italia ma non ebbe gli esiti sperati e Ravenna cadde nel 751 sotto le lame longobarde. La risposta imperiale pot  concretarsi solamente un secolo dopo, quando fu inviato il generale Niceforo Foca il vecchio, che riusc  a conquistare tra il 885 e il 886 gran parte della Puglia, della Calabria e parte del beneventano. Il controllo imperiale si mantenne forte per quasi due secoli e pot  pure intervenire, con parte dei suoi soldati italici, nella nuova spedizione militare organizzata da Giorgio Maniace per riconquistare la Sicilia nel 1038.
