The atlas sheds light on the cultures that created the pyramids at Giza, Stonehenge and the Acropolis. Author Margaret Oliphant revisits the nine great cultures - Mesopotamia and the Near East, Egypt, Persia, prehistoric Europe, Greece and the Aegean, the Roman world, India, China and the Americas - providing a history of the peoples and their achievements. The accounts describe the rise and fall of empires, the rulers who governed them, and the adventurers and archaeologists who later rediscovered their treasures. Kirsteen's options appear to be unpaid drudgery at home, or a loveless marriage. Rejecting both, she escapes to London where she makes a living through her own innate craft and skill. Though scorned by her family for choosing to work as a mantua-maker, Kirsteen becomes highly successful in the life she carves out for herself. Kirsteen is a startlingly modern novel whose powerful voice, narrative drive and ironic exposure of injustice and hypocrisy provide a fascinating perspective on women in Victorian society. First published in 1890, and written by Queen Victoria's favourite novelist Margaret Oliphant, Kirsteen is a deep, rich novel by an author at the height of her powers.
Hester tells the story of the aging but powerful Catherine Vernon, and her conflict with the young and determined Hester, whose growing attachment to Edward, Catherine's favorite, spells disaster for all concerned.
Catherine Vernon, jilted in her youth, has risen to power in a man's world as head of the family bank. She thinks she sees through everyone and rules over a family of dependents with knowing cynicism. But there are two people in Redborough who resist her. One is Hester, a young relation with a personality as strong as Catherine's, and as determined to find a role for herself. The other is Edward, who Catherine treats like a son. Conflict between the young and the old is inevitable, and in its depiction of the complex relationships that develop between the three principal characters, Hester is a masterpiece of psychological realism. In exploring the difficulty of understanding human nature, it is also a compulsive story of financial and sexual risk-taking that inevitably results in a searing climax. Margaret Oliphant is one of the great Victorian novelists, and this edition re-establishes her importance.
About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. As a girl she constantly occupied herself with literary experiments, and in 1849 published her first novel Passages in the Life of Mrs Margaret Maitland. This she followed up in 1851 with Caleb Field. In May 1852 she married her cousin, Frank Wilson Oliphant. He had very delicate health. For the sake of his health they moved in January 1859 to Florence, and thence to Rome, where Frank Oliphant died.
