Paying particular attention to Mauritius, the largest recipient of indentured labour, the author utilizes sources including the letters, petitions and depositions of the migrants themselves. These documents highlight the indenture experience: the migrants' perception of their migration, of the community from which they came as well as the one which they had joined, and the huge range of emotions thrown up by their experience - their frustration, their disappointment, the pain of separation from relatives. The Indian indenture experience is shown to have parallels with that of the European migrants who moved to America and Australia, whose histories have been similarly studied through \"letters home\". In this work, use is made of new sources to show that the differences between Indian and European diasporas may not be as great as the similarities.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51412021575953,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51412021772561,"sku":"GOR011943187","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0718500318.jpg?v=1750700355"},{"product_id":"pirates-of-cayman-book-marina-carter-9780953991624","title":"Pirates of Cayman","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51682236825873,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51682237317393,"sku":"GOR004264040","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0953991628.jpg?v=1751331455"},{"product_id":"abacus-and-mah-jong-book-marina-carter-9789004175723","title":"Abacus and Mah Jong","description":"This work aims to engage with the complexities surrounding evaluations of ethnic and national identity - a focus of recent interest by scholars from a range of disciplines including political science, anthropology and economics - through a case study of Chinese migration to and settlement in Mauritius. The book investigates the complex mechanisms and processes  involved in the transplantation of groups of people within the colonial context, and in particular seeks to create a tableau within which the construction of a mythology of migration is set against the realities of negotiation and communication with the wider society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52694732472593,"sku":"NLS9789004175723","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004175723.jpg?v=1778581009"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-marina-carter.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
