They are the only substantial monuments built during the dark Ages and the largest of the dykes are comparable to Hadrian's Wall or the canals of the eighteenth century in scale. This is the first book on the archaeology of the dykes as a whole. Recent fieldwork has expanded our knowledge of the dykes as well as showing many are not post-Roman but prehistoric in date. Arguments about the origins and purpose of the dykes have raged since antiquarians first described them but they have been neglected in recent studies of the Dark Ages. Our understanding of the landscape in which the dykes were built has radically altered over the last fifty years due to advances in archaeological techniques and methods, yet much of this information has not previously been applied to studies of the dykes. This book discusses how the dykes could have functioned and possible reasons why they were built as well as the development of ideas about the dykes. A survey and catalogue of all the known post-Roman dykes is included.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49512174518545,"sku":"GOR006375753","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51440921379089,"sku":"GOR014282243","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445601338.jpg?v=1760521970"},{"product_id":"mac-os-x-black-book-book-mark-bell-9781576106068","title":"Mac OS X Black Book","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49656356765969,"sku":"GOR003340385","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1576106063.jpg?v=1751341876"},{"product_id":"catholic-social-teaching-and-labour-law-book-mark-bell-9780198873754","title":"Catholic Social Teaching and Labour Law","description":"Catholic Social Teaching and Labour Law explores the contribution that religious ethics makes to debates on justice in working life. Many faiths include beliefs about the significance of work to human development and the need for work to be performed under conditions that uphold dignity, equality, and solidarity . This book considers how the substantive provisions of labour law reflect prior ethical choices about how workers should be treated, and how beliefs from Catholicism influence these.  This book provides a thorough account of the principles found in Catholic Social Teaching (CST), and how these impact human work and labour rights . It tests the contemporary relevance of its principles by applying them to current debates, using EU labour law as a case study. Specifically, it examines CST on the right to a just wage, the right to rest, worker participation, and equality and discrimination. The book finds that CST offers fresh insights on long-standing injustices in the labour market, such as low wages or poor working conditions, and also sheds light on emerging challenges such as ensuring rest in an era of digital connectivity. The book recognizes that tensions arise in areas where the Church's beliefs diverge from those that prevail in a secular understanding of human rights. This is particularly evident in debates relating to equality. It concludes that faith-based perspectives should be included in pluralistic dialogue on the future of labour law.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49750246162705,"sku":"NGR9780198873754","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51191934943505,"sku":"NIN9780198873754","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198873751.jpg?v=1750737775"},{"product_id":"mac-os-9-black-book-book-mark-bell-9781576109298","title":"Mac OS 9 Black Book","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50125172408593,"sku":"CIN1576109291G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1576109291.jpg?v=1750895007"},{"product_id":"war-on-carbs-book-mark-bell-9780999658703","title":"War on Carbs","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50252117442833,"sku":"CIN0999658700G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0999658700.jpg?v=1751332220"},{"product_id":"lego-r-mindstorms-r-ev3-book-mark-bell-9781484222614","title":"LEGO (R) MINDSTORMS (R) EV3","description":"Tagline: Uncover the secret of King Ixtua's tomb","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50377242673425,"sku":"CIN148422261XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52343206019345,"sku":"NLS9781484222614","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52748955582737,"sku":"NIN9781484222614","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/148422261X.jpg?v=1751148810"},{"product_id":"racism-and-equality-in-the-european-union-book-mark-bell-9780199297849","title":"Racism and Equality in the European Union","description":"The European Union has committed itself to combating racism as a general objective of law and policy. EU legislation requires Member States to introduce laws prohibiting racial discrimination in many aspects of everyday life, including employment, education, healthcare, and housing. Alongside legislation requiring action at national level, the EU institutions have also made periodic commitments to 'mainstream' racial equality: taking anti-racism objectives into account within all areas of EU law and policy.  This book analyses the extent to which the objectives of combating racism and promoting ethnic equality have been effectively mainstreamed throughout a wide range of EU policy fields. It begins by considering what combating racism means in the contemporary context of the enlarged EU. Bell explores what mainstreaming ethnic equality objectives entails, and whether the priorities and instruments differ from those adopted in the earlier mainstreaming of gender equality, or those used on other discrimination grounds. The second part of the book examines the extent to which EU law and policy objectives have, in practice, been integrated, exploring the effects in the key areas of employment, social inclusion (including education, health and housing), immigration, and criminal law.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51102065459473,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51102067949841,"sku":"NIN9780199297849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52663847256337,"sku":"NLS9780199297849","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199297843.jpg?v=1776939421"},{"product_id":"gabrielle-roy-and-antoine-de-saint-exupery-book-mark-bell-9783631435182","title":"Gabrielle Roy and Antoine de Saint-Exupery","description":"The pivotal work within the literary corpus of both Antoine de Saint-Exupery and Gabrielle Roy each, significantly, bears the title Terre des hommes. Saint-Exupery encapsulates the results of a searching existential and humanist enquiry into a recit (1939), and Roy her similar findings into a thirty-page essay commissioned to introduce the 1967 Montreal World Exposition, itself named Terre des Hommes. These pieces of writing, and the development of their key themes in other texts, lend themselves eminently to comparison for through Roy's essay we learn of her specific attraction to the Exuperian ethos of l'homme (self) and man's interaction with la terre (non-self). The present study aims principally to detect the presence of these essences in each author's work. In a subsidiary way it also endeavours to situate their rationals within a certain historico-literary context. Finally, an attempt is made to critically assess especially Roy's distinctive representation, through literature, of the self and the exterior world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52685180272913,"sku":"NLS9783631435182","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783631435182.jpg?v=1762324910"},{"product_id":"aphorism-in-the-francophone-novel-of-the-twentieth-century-book-mark-bell-9780773515284","title":"Aphorism in the Francophone Novel of the Twentieth Century","description":"\u003cdiv\u003eAphorism in the Francophone Novel of the Twentieth Century includes critical readings of Terre des hommes by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Alexandre Chenevert by Gabrielle Roy, Gouverneurs de la rosée by Jacques Roumain, Pluie et vent sur Télumée miracle by Simone Schwarz-Bart, La route des Flandres by Claude Simon, Présence de la mort by C.F. Bell addresses the problems inherent in the term aphorism, the narrative and discourse function of aphorism within the genre of the novel, the interrelation between the structure of aphorism and the epistemological and hermeneutical functions this sub-genre may perform as a component part of the narrative fabric, the \"national\" character of aphoristics, and the problems that arise from \"anthologizing\" a novel's aphorisms. The importance of aphoristic formulation in the French literary tradition and its undeniable presence in the modern novel make this a particularly significant and fruitful study.\u003c\/div\u003e","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53133054345489,"sku":"NGR9780773515284","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780773515284.jpg?v=1771332757"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-mark-bell.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
