He gives a dramatic description of the event, relying heavily on the eyewitness testimony from the townspeople who were there on that fateful day. He records the experiences of the German airmen who carried out the raid and pioneered a new and terrifying method of warfare. In addition, he recounts in graphic detail similar attacks by bombers, seaplanes and Zepplins on other Kentish towns, including Dover, Ramsgate, Margate and Sheerness.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49506242986257,"sku":"GOR002372838","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49630250107153,"sku":"GOR011721067","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49736992129297,"sku":"NGR9781844151196","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52391087964433,"sku":"GOR010537598","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1844151190.jpg?v=1751431124"},{"product_id":"piers-of-disaster-book-martin-easdown-9781872167817","title":"Piers of Disaster","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49510347637009,"sku":"GOR004894484","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1872167810.jpg?v=1751250363"},{"product_id":"yorkshire-s-seaside-piers-book-martin-easdown-9781845630621","title":"Yorkshire's Seaside Piers","description":"Pleasure piers are among the most distinctive and memorable creations of Victorian Britain. These magnificent and evocative buildings represent the exuberant, optimistic style of the British seaside resort at the peak of its popularity, and the Yorkshire coast possessed no less than six of these extraordinary structures. Today, only the pier at Saltburn-by-the-Sea remains, and, as a whole, only half of the numbers of piers built survive as fascinating relics of a lost age. In this meticulously researched and highly illustrated account, Martin Easdown tells the story of the rise and fall of Yorkshire's seaside piers. The piers he principally describes in his lively narrative are the long-lost structures at Coatham, Redcar, Scarborough, Hornsea and Withernsea, plus the county's only surviving pleasure pier at Saltburn-by-the-Sea. He looks how they were designed and constructed, at the men who built and financed them, and at the hazards that beset them - fire, storm, ship collision, war damage and ever-threat of insolvency, that heralded their demise.\nThe author, who is an acknowledged expert on the history of piers, gives a vivid insight into the deep impact of these structures on the social life, the economy and the character of the Yorkshire towns in which they were built. His entertaining book reveals - and records - a neglected aspect of Yorkshire's history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49519925264657,"sku":"GOR007880341","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51101857349905,"sku":"GOR012569565","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53724845834513,"sku":"GOR015017308","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1845630629.jpg?v=1751432281"},{"product_id":"southend-pier-book-martin-easdown-9780752442150","title":"Southend Pier","description":"A history of Southend pier","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49523708100881,"sku":"GOR003188850","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752442155.jpg?v=1751448334"},{"product_id":"piers-of-wales-book-martin-easdown-9781848689206","title":"Piers of Wales","description":"Wales is known for its green hills and valleys, narrow gauge steam railways and medieval castles, but not, it appears, for its pleasure piers. This is a shame, as the country has some of the finest surviving piers in England and Wales, with three particularly fine examples. Llandudno, 'Queen of the Welsh Resorts', has an elegant pier to match that title. The pier is Grade II listed and has retained much of its Victorian ambience. It is often used for film and television work requiring a Victorian pier setting. It is without doubt one of the finest surviving piers in the United Kingdom. The pier at Bangor is equally impressive. Stretching into the Menai Straits, the pier looks almost exactly as it did when built in 1896. As an example of a Victorian promenade pier, Bangor is second to none. Penarth is another fine Welsh pier: a neat structure with good ironwork and an attractive Art Deco pavilion. Alone amongst the Welsh piers, it remains in use as a landing stage. Aberystwyth was the first Welsh resort to erect a purpose-built promenade and pleasure pier. Six pleasure piers remain in Wales, of which Llandudno, Bangor and Penarth are indeed the jewels in the crown. Of the others, Aberystwyth is now little more than a pavilion over the sea. Mumbles is a fine pier, retaining much of its attractive ironwork, but sadly large sections of the pier head remain closed off to the public, awaiting restoration. The outlook for Colwyn Bay is uncertain: the pier remains closed as battles rage between its private owner and the council over its future. The piers of Wales were at the forefront of the country's coastal leisure development and continue to give the opportunity for the enjoyment of a walk over the waves - long may that be so.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49528944001297,"sku":"GOR006049679","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848689209.jpg?v=1752317262"},{"product_id":"foul-deeds-and-suspicious-deaths-around-folkestone-book-martin-easdown-9781845630119","title":"Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths Around Folkestone","description":"Takes the reader on a sinister journey through the annals of crime in Folkestone, Hythe and the surrounding area. Sadly, the county has also witnessed the demolition of several of its grander houses due to changes in social habits and the decline and amalgamation of great estates, not to mention fire, dry rot and death duties. Estates of modern houses now cover the site of the many lost houses, while the remains of foundations, surviving entrance lodges and other outbuildings, and a few garden features can be found if looked for. It is evocative to think that what was once such an imposing building, the centre and social hub of the area, is now just a few scanty remains in a field. This is the first book to feature the lost country houses of the 'Garden of England' and Martin Easdown provides us with 120 examples of the grandest mansions that have disappeared, listed in gazetteer form with illustrations. This simple method of transporting people up and down the cliff side has been a feature of our coast, and a few inland towns, for over 150 years and has recently undergone a renaissance at places as varied as the National Coal Mining Museum, Legoland and the Centre for Alternative Technology. The cliff lift, otherwise termed the cliff railway or tramway, is also known as a funicular railway. The word 'funicular' is defined as 'of rope or tension', in other words a cable-hauled railway or tramway. The lifts were directly descended from cable-hauled railways, prevalent in mines and quarries, but also early passenger lines, where an engine or winding gear hauled loads up steep slopes. The term 'cliff lift' also generally encompasses the elevator-type lifts that were erected at some resorts. This book illustrates, mainly in colour, all the principal cliff lifts and railways that have been built in the British Isles, along with associated cable tramways, since their inception in the Victorian age. In addition to featuring all the surviving lifts, this book includes others which are long gone, and serves as a fine record of these charming and unique structures.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49733250154769,"sku":"NGR9781445680033","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50149490786577,"sku":"GOR010207243","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50964510703889,"sku":"GOR010702473","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445680033.jpg?v=1752315394"},{"product_id":"lancashire-s-seaside-piers-book-martin-easdown-9781845630935","title":"Lancashire's Seaside Piers","description":"In this, a companion volume to his definitive history of Yorkshire's pleasure piers, Martin Easdown turns his expert attention westward - to the Lancashire coast. With an illustrious history of guarding this vulnerable corner of England, Hythe blossomed into a quiet seaside resort famed for its Royal Military Canal, attractive old High Street and macabre collection of skulls and bones in the parish church crypt. The beauty and charm of Hythe was captured in the many picture postcards of the town issued from the beginning of the twentieth century when postcards were the principal form of communication. Through the author's beautiful collection of postcards, we can view the changes to Hythe through the years and see some of the buildings that have been lost along the way. The town's main attractions, such as the seafront, canal, parish church, High Street and light railway, are all featured on these attractive colour postcards. Other aspects of Hythe's history, including events and disasters, were issued on rarer monochrome postcards, a selection of which are included.
