A series of distinguished contributors, including exponents of alternative positions on welfare from the right, left and centre, examine key issues in the disputes over the relationship between the state and welfare. Individual chapters both explore the different political and theoretical issues in the debate, and concentrate on their application in key areas of social policy. Particular attention is given to the role of social work, and public policy and the family. The final section of the book examines the political sources of the current crisis of social policy, and the prospects for a resolution of the crisis of the welfare state. The State or the Market is a set book on the Open University Course D211, Social Problems and Social Welfare.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49527387291921,"sku":"GOR004342660","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52450923872529,"sku":"NLS9780803986428","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0803986424.jpg?v=1750979696"},{"product_id":"politics-of-greed-book-martin-loney-9780745301457","title":"The Politics of Greed","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49612170985745,"sku":"GOR004475445","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51361552466193,"sku":"GOR008534744","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0745301452.jpg?v=1750744346"},{"product_id":"crisis-of-the-inner-city-book-martin-loney-9780333256916","title":"The Crisis of the Inner City","description":"Quantum field theory is one of most central constructions in 20th century th- retical physics, and it continues to develop rapidly in many different directions. The aim of the workshop New Developments in Quantum Field Theory, which was held in Zakopane, Poland, June 14-20, 1997, was to capture a broad selection of the most recent advances in this field. The conference was sponsored by the Scientific and - vironmental Affairs Division of NATO, as part of the Advanced Research Workshop series. This book contains the proceedings of that meeting. Major topics covered at the workshop include quantized theories of gravity, string theory, conformal field theory, cosmology, field theory approaches to critical phenomena and the renormalization group, matrix models, and field theory techniques applied to the theory of turbulence. One common theme at the conference was the use of large-Nmatrix models to obtain exact results in a variety of different disciplines. For example, it has been known for several years that by taking a suitable double-scaling limit, certain string theories (or two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to matter) can be re-obtained from the large-Nexpansion of matrix models. There continues to be a large activity in this area of research, which was well reflected by talks given at our workshop. Remarkably, large- Nmatrix models have very recently - just a few months before our meeting - been shown to have yet another deep relation to string theory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49626654441745,"sku":"GOR004391872","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50986411786513,"sku":"GOR007796869","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0333256913.jpg?v=1751422550"},{"product_id":"rhodesia-book-martin-loney-9780140410419","title":"Rhodesia","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51513456787729,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51513457279249,"sku":"GOR002434805","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52980916879633,"sku":"GOR003032218","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0140410414.jpg?v=1751004893"},{"product_id":"state-or-the-market-book-martin-loney-9780803986411","title":"The State or the Market","description":"This collection deals with the central questions which have emerged from the break-up of the postwar political consensus around the welfare state.
