This book explores two of the best loved of these parks, Regent's Park and Primrose Hill. Regent's Park was created in the early nineteenth century as part of the most interesting exercise in town planning in British history. As well as the elegant teraces devised by architect John Nash, it includes grassland, woodland, wetland, gardens, a lake, a canal, the Open Air Theatre - and London Zoo. Primrose Hill, with its superb views over London, was added to Regent's Park, as a separate but linked park, in 1842. The two parks are home to a remarkable range of animal and bird life, and are used and loved by millions of Londoners and visitors to London. In this book Martin Sheppard traces the history of Regent's Park and Primrose Hill and describes their architecture and their life. Sandra Lousada's superb photographs reveal the parks in every aspect.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49574448562449,"sku":"GOR002688629","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49599447040273,"sku":"GOR013467396","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0711225982.jpg?v=1751439285"},{"product_id":"primrose-hill-book-martin-sheppard-9781859362228","title":"Primrose Hill","description":"Primrose Hill exercises a hold upon the imagination of everyone who climbs it. The site of William Blake's vision of the sun, and the subject of one of W.H. Auden's earliest poems, it is a green sanctuary offering superb and ever-changing views over London.  Long before it became a public park in 1842, Primrose Hill attracted duellists, poets, revolutionaries, soldiers and sportsmen, as well as prospective developers and large numbers of ordinary Londoners. Martin Sheppard's scintillating history of Primrose Hill, one of London's great landmarks, recounts the many remarkable events on the hill over the centuries. He also conveys the everyday experience of visitors to it since it first became a popular place of excursion in the eighteenth century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49675585650961,"sku":"GOR009067060","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49737073787153,"sku":"NGR9781859362228","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51745141883153,"sku":"GOR008842643","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1859362222.jpg?v=1751379860"},{"product_id":"guardsman-in-the-crimea-book-martin-sheppard-9781399069786","title":"A Guardsman in the Crimea","description":"The Brigade of Guards was the elite force of the British Army in the Crimea. William Scarlett, a captain in the Scots Fusilier Guard and one of the most active junior officers in the regiment, fought throughout the entire campaign. After the Allied landing at Kalamita Bay, Scarlett rallied his regiment at a critical moment during the battle of the Alma, supported by his company sergeant, who was awarded the VC.  William Scarlett’s life may well have been saved after the battle of Balaklava by becoming an aide de camp to his uncle, General James Scarlett, the commander of the Heavy Brigade. This meant that he did not fight at Inkerman, which took a heavy toll on the officers of the Guards Brigade. Returning to the trenches early in 1855, William Scarlett was involved in all the phases of the siege of Sebastopol until its fall in September 1855.  The survival of 139 previously unpublished letters record Scarlett’s deeds and thoughts. Written to nineteen different correspondents, and deliberately intended by him to form a personal account of his rôle in the war, his letters provide a forceful commentary on the successes and failures of the British army in the East. His life before and after the war is well recorded. Becoming the third Lord Abinger in 1861, Scarlett was the second English peer to marry an American. He built a castle in Scotland, where Queen Victoria stayed in 1873, and two of his daughters became notable suffragettes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49752807473425,"sku":"NGR9781399069786","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50918590841105,"sku":"GOR014122960","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1399069780.jpg?v=1751443528"},{"product_id":"love-on-inishcoo-1787-book-martin-sheppard-9781789010237","title":"Love on Inishcoo, 1787","description":"In the summer of 1787 a young couple, Edmund Cobb Hurry and Eliza Liddell, met and fell in love on the small island of Inishcoo, off the coast of Donegal. Martin Sheppard has discovered a wealth of material about all aspects of Mixtow's past. He gives a detailed account of Mixtow's history, ranging from the activities of the notorious Mixstowe pirates in the middle ages to its part in the writing of The Wind in the Willows. Since the 1860s Mixtow has faced Fowey Docks, as they have expanded, giving it a privileged view of traffic on the river. In the Second World War, when the docks shipped large quantities of explosives, Mixtow  was used by the US Navy to repair landing craft.  Over the last 150 years Mixtow's principal activities have changed from farming and fishing to holiday letting and yachting. A readable and highly enjoyable account of a small but intriguing area, Mixtow: A History is a revealing reflection on the history of Fowey and of Cornwall.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50689905721617,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50689905983761,"sku":"GOR012251320","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/190981718X.jpg?v=1751281553"},{"product_id":"primrose-hill-book-martin-sheppard-9781836282556","title":"Primrose Hill","description":"Martin Sheppards Primrose Hill is the thrilling history of one of Londons greatest landmarks, recounting the many remarkable events that took place there over the centuries.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51631282651409,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51631282913553,"sku":"NGR9781836282556","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53143830397201,"sku":"GOR014772879","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53555668418833,"sku":"GOR014958393","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1836282559.jpg?v=1750930037"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-martin-sheppard.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
