The idea of a book the size of a private exhibition, with spectacular images reproduced to state-of-the-art origination and printing standards, emerged from an open, experimental dialogue between photographer and publisher. With the SUMO weighing in—boxed and shrink-wrapped—at 35.4 kg (just under 80 pounds), Newton created a landmark book that stood head and shoulders above anything previously attempted, both in terms of conceptual extravagance and technical specifications.    Published in an edition of 10,000 signed and numbered copies, the SUMO sold out soon after publication and quickly multiplied its value. It now features in numerous collections around the world, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The legendary copy number one, signed by more than 100 of the book’s featured celebrities, broke the record for the most expensive book published in the 20th century, sold at an auction in Berlin on April 6, 2000 for 620,000 German marks—about 317,000 euros.    Now, this XL edition celebrates 20 years of SUMO, the result of a project conceived by Helmut Newton some years ago. Revised by his wife June, the volume gathers 394 images and a booklet that takes us through the making-of this publishing venture—a spectacular tribute to the larger-than-life Helmut Newton, now in a friendly format.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49738847256849,"sku":"NGR9783836578196","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51461076451601,"sku":"CIN3836578190G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3836578190.jpg?v=1750839179"},{"product_id":"helmut-newton-alice-springs-book-matthias-harder-9783836596916","title":"Helmut Newton \u0026 Alice Springs","description":"Us and Them is an ode to partnership and art: Helmut Newton and Alice Springs (aka June Newton) published their intimate, personal self-portraits and portraits of each other first in 1998. Berlin, 1936; lives and works in Omaha and Paris) oeuvre defies easy summary. She started taking pictures in Paris in the 1960s, making portraits of her then husband Daniel Spoerri--who, like she, was initially training as a dancer--and other members of the Fluxus group and Nouveaux R alistes, including Emmett Williams and Robert Filiou, Jean Tinguely and Jacques Villegl . Around the same time, she also photographed Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp for various magazines; her friends Eva Aeppli and Niki de Saint Phalle were among her favorite sitters. In the 1970s, she took a long creative hiatus; after moving to Omaha, Nebraska, she poured all her energy into starting a number of restaurants and developing an entire downtown neighborhood. But then, in the early years of the new millennium, she returned to photography, capturing breathtaking neo-baroque still lifes featuring flowers, fruits, freshly killed game, antique glasses, and illuminating candles in large formats. Vera Mercer's fourth monograph presents her most recent opulent still lifes in color, as well as a novelty in her oeuvre: restrained black-and-white flower pictures.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49960970125585,"sku":"NGR9783969120491","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3969120497.jpg?v=1750871188"},{"product_id":"christian-rothmann-the-light-touch-book-matthias-harder-9783969120682","title":"Christian Rothmann - The Light Touch","description":"Christian Rothmann (b. Undressed","description":"Mario Testino’s Undressed removes various layers. Coinciding with an exhibition conceived exclusively for the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, this intimate series explores the notion of undressing in photography as much as it lays Testino’s archive bare, probing beyond the photographer’s established public image to reveal a deeper understanding of his practice and oeuvre.  The 50 featured photographs center on the naked body, alternately exploring and pushing the traditions and boundaries between sex, gender identity, and fashion. Honoring the influence of Helmut Newton, the images become abstracted body landscapes, the protagonists appearing as mere form, a torso, even a statue.  A special highlight are previously unseen photographs shot in the Testino studio, in which an exuberant atmosphere intermingles with the implicit frisson of nudity and where playfully amorous dynamics never slip into the obscene or pornographic.  Testino’s lineup ranges from supermodel protagonists, such as Kate Moss and Amber Valletta, to anonymous, androgynous men; from individual portraits to group photos. We see many intimate moments, some caught candidly, some consciously orchestrated, such as a young man shaving a woman’s upper pubic hair in a luxurious bathroom. Following in the tradition of SIR, many of the images may be seen to redefine masculine paradigms in the same way that Newton created his own brand of female beauty.  As emotions, aesthetics, and bodies meet, Testino grants new insight into his world-famous work. The images are accompanied by an introduction from curator Matthias Harder, a candid conversation piece with Carine Roitfeld, as well as an essay from psychiatrist and psychologist Manfred Spitzer who offers a neuroscientific perspective on our visual perception of bodies and beauty.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50164614791441,"sku":"CIN383656646XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51527605322001,"sku":"GOR011678939","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/383656646X.jpg?v=1751416012"},{"product_id":"helmut-newton-book-matthias-harder-9783754400685","title":"Helmut Newton","description":"Berlin had an indelible influence on Helmut Newton and his photographic work. This volume unites a selection of her finest portraits, nudes, dance stills, architecture photography and images of rural Greece. In the 1920s Nelly learned special techniques of photographic reproduction while working in Dresden with leading German photographers of the day, Hugo Erfurth and Franz Fiedler. Using these techniques, in particular the bromoil method, she was able to make photographs which closely resemble painted works. At this time she began making nudes and dance stills. On her return to Greece she opened a photo studio in Athens and created portraits of intellectuals, the rich and the beautiful in the Greek metropolis. She became the official national photographer of her country and her works were exhibited in the Greek booth at the world exhibition in New York in 1939. On the outbreak of World War II, Nelly remained in New York where her work developed a stronger urban, photo-journalistic character. In 1966, her creative activity having come to an end, she returned to Greece.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53584916283665,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53584916349201,"sku":"GOR002994654","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783791325538.jpg?v=1779445998"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-matthias-harder.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
