He indicts both Lord Alfred's vanity and his own weakness in acceding to those wishes. In the second half, Wilde charts his spiritual development in prison and identification with Jesus Christ, whom he characterises as a romantic, individualist artist. The letter began Dear Bosie and ended Your Affectionate Friend.

Wilde wrote the letter between January and March 1897, close to the end of his imprisonment. Contact had lapsed between Douglas and Wilde and the latter had suffered from his close supervision, physical labour, and emotional isolation. Nelson, the new prison governor, thought that writing might be more cathartic than prison labour. He was not allowed to send the long letter which he was allowed to write for medicinal purposes; each page was taken away when completed, and only at the end could he read it over and make revisions. Nelson gave the long letter to him on his release on 18 May 1897.

Wilde entrusted the manuscript to the journalist Robert Ross (another former lover, loyal friend, and rival to Bosie). Ross published the letter in 1905, five years after Wilde's death, giving it the title De Profundis from Psalm 130. It was an incomplete version, excised of its autobiographical elements and references to the Queensberry family; various editions gave more text until in 1962 the complete and correct version appeared in a volume of Wilde's letters.

picture-of-dorian-gray-royal-collector-s-edition-case-laminate-hardcover-with-ja-book-monsieur-oscar-wilde-9781774378359
The Picture of Dorian Gray (Royal Collector's Edition) (Case Laminate Hardcover with Jacket)

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics.

'The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.'

When Basil Hallward paints the portrait of young, handsome Dorian Gray, he falls prey to his dazzling beauty. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. Contemporary reviews all praised the play's humour, though some were cautious about its explicit lack of social messages, while others foresaw the modern consensus that it was the culmination of Wilde's artistic career so far. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde's most enduringly popular play. The successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career but also heralded his downfall. The Marquess of Queensberry, whose son Lord Alfred Douglas was Wilde's lover, planned to present the writer with a bouquet of rotten vegetables and disrupt the show. Wilde was tipped off and Queensberry was refused admission. Soon afterwards their feud came to a climax in court, where Wilde's homosexual double life was revealed to the Victorian public and he was eventually sentenced to imprisonment. His notoriety caused the play, despite its early success, to be closed after 86 performances. After his release, he published the play from exile in Paris, but he wrote no further comic or dramatic work.

With brilliant illustrations by a master of comic art, the lyrical prose of this fairy tale by Oscar Wilde is brought to life. This modestly priced edition of Wilde's scintillating comic masterpiece will delight lovers of drama and literature.

2011 Reprint of 1891 Edition. The Picture of Dorian Gray is the only published novel by Oscar Wilde. The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is impressed by Dorian's beauty and becomes infatuated with him, believing his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. Espousing a new hedonism, Lord Henry suggests the only things worth pursuing in life are beauty and fulfillment of the senses. Realizing that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian (whimsically) expresses a desire to sell his soul to ensure the portrait Basil has painted would age rather than he himself. Dorian's wish is fulfilled, plunging him into debauched acts. The portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging. The Picture of Dorian Gray is considered a work of classic gothic fiction with a strong Faustian theme.
storytelling-magic-the-pied-piper-of-hamelin-pinocchio-the-happy-prince-a-little-princess-cd-9789626344514
Storytelling Magic
Classic fairy stories from Oscar Wilde, sixty of the finest and most entertaining poems for younger listeners, plus two of the most vivid figures in children's fiction: The Little Princess and Pinocchio. The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People was first performed on 14 February 1895 at St. James's Theatre in London. It is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personae in order to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satirical treatment of Victorian manners and customs. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make it Wilde's most enduringly popular play.
The Picture of Dorian Gray is Oscar Wilde's classic tale of the moral decline of its title character, Dorian Gray.
