Wade","description":"Few Supreme Court decisions have stirred up as much controversy, vitriolic debate, and even violence as Roe v. Wade in 1973. Four decades later, it remains a touchstone for the culture wars in the United States and a pivot upon which much of our politics turns. With that in mind, N. E. H. Hull and Peter Charles Hoffer have taken stock of the abortion debates, controversies, and cases that have emerged during the past decade in order to update their best-selling book on this landmark case. As with the first two editions, this book details the case's historical background; highlights Roe v. Wade's core issues, essential personalities, and key precedents; tracks the case's path through the courts; clarifies the jurisprudence behind the Court's ruling in Roe; assesses the impact of the presidential elections of George W. Bush and Barack Obama along with the confirmations of Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Samuel Alito, Justice Sonia Sotomayor; and gauges the case's impact on American society and subsequent challenges to it in Webster v. Reproductive Health Services (1989), Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), and Gonzales v. Carhart (2007). This third updated edition also adds two completely new chapters covering abortion politics and legal battles in Obama's second term and Donald J. Trump's first term. The new material covers two important cases in detail: Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt (2016) and June Medical Services, LLC v. Russo (2020). The cases dealt with state laws-Texas and Louisiana, respectively-designed to limit access to abortion by requiring doctors performing abortions to have admission privileges at a state-authorized hospital within thirty miles of the abortion clinic. In both cases the Court ruled the laws unconstitutional, thus handing abortion rights' activists key victories in the face of an increasingly conservative Court. The new chapters also cover the confirmations of Justices Elena Kagan, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh as well as the heated political environment surrounding the Court in the age of Trump.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49909437137169,"sku":"CIN070063245XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/070063245X.jpg?v=1763225220"},{"product_id":"roscoe-pound-and-karl-llewellyn-searching-for-an-american-jurisprudence-book-n-e-h-hull-9780226360430","title":"Roscoe Pound and Karl Llewellyn - Searching for an American Jurisprudence","description":"American legal history is traditionally viewed as a series of schools of thought or landmark court decisions, not as the work of individuals. This book tells the pivotal story of American jurisprudence through two of its most influential shapers: Karl Llewellyn, father of legal realism, poet, and mercurial romantic, and Roscoe Pound, iron-willed leader of sociological jurisprudence. These theorists adapted the legal profession to the changing needs of 20th-century America. Through painstaking archival research, Hull shows how the intellectual battles of the day took place against a network of private and public relationships, and demonstrates how Pound's and Llewellyn's ideas of jurisprudence sprang from a kind of intellectual bricolage, the pragmatic assemblage of parts rather than the development of a unified whole, that is considered peculiarly American. The book attempts to uncover the roots of American jurisprudence in the lives of two of its most outstanding figures.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49917010673937,"sku":"CIN0226360431G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0226360431.jpg?v=1751037659"},{"product_id":"woman-who-dared-to-vote-book-n-e-h-hull-9780700618491","title":"The Woman Who Dared to Vote","description":"Summarises the woman suffrage movement in the post-Civil War era, reveals its betrayal by former allies in the abolitionist movement, and describes its fall into disarray. Wade","description":"The issue of abortion has sharply divided America. The bitter debate over \"Roe v. Wade\" - in the courts, legislatures, press and streets - has grown ever more ferocious since the Supreme Court's landmark decision in 1973. For years pro-choicers have applauded \"Roe\" as a guarantee of women's rights, while pro-lifers have condemned it as the work of an activist and atheistic Court. Now it looms at the centre of a growing political storm, as a new president, and old Court, and a divided Congress reconsider \"Roe\"'s status in the wake of the controversial 2000 elections. Giving equal attention to both sides of the conflict, the authors trace and analyze the core debates, examine the case's unique history, clarify the jurisprudence behind the Court's ruling, and gauge its impact on American society. Court attempted to steer a middle course by rejecting both abortion on demand and the absolute right to life and yet, in the end, wound up igniting a firestorm of protest instead. The book examines the complete social and legal context of the case. Hull and Hoffer review more than a century of abortion practice (and abuse), common-law views on abortion, 19th-century criminalization measures, and the rapid changes in science, public mores and civil rights that finally brought the issue before the Supreme Court. They also trace abortion law through the 20th century, reprise the 1965 case of \"Griswold v. Connecticut\", in which the Supreme Court overturned a state law against contraceptives, and reexamine the highly publicized attempts to reverse \"Roe\" in \"Webster v. Reproductive Services\" (1989) and \"Casey v. Planned Parenthood\" (1992). All of the key actors are here: Norma McCorvey, the \"Jane Roe\" who never actually had the abortion she originally sought; attorney Sarah Weddington, who challenged Texas law by drawing on her own abortion experience; lobbyists on both sides of the question; and each of the Supreme Court justices. This is a book that can inform and enlighten those on either side of the debate, as well as all of those in between.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50220864209169,"sku":"CIN0700611436G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50357978693905,"sku":"CIN0700611436A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52848130588945,"sku":"GOR014638973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52982413230353,"sku":"CIN0700611436VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0700611436.jpg?v=1751360450"},{"product_id":"woman-who-dared-to-vote-book-n-e-h-hull-9780700618484","title":"The Woman Who Dared to Vote","description":"Summarises the woman suffrage movement in the post-Civil War era, reveals its betrayal by former allies in the abolitionist movement, and describes its fall into disarray.
