Shakespeare depicted him as a tragic figure, an irresponsible, cruel monarch who nevertheless rose in stature as the substance of power slipped from him. By later writers he has been variously portrayed as a half-crazed autocrat, or a conventional ruler whose principal errors were the mismanagement of his nobility and a disregard for the political conventions of his age. This book offers a reinterpretation of the king. Nigel Saul paints a picture of Richard as a highly assertive and determined ruler, one whose key aim was to exalt and dignify the crown. In Richard's view, the crown was threatened by the factiousness of the nobility and the assertiveness of the common people. The king met these challenges by exacting obedience, encouraging lofty new forms of address and constructing an elaborate system of rule by bonds and oaths. Saul traces the sources of Richard's political ideas and finds that he was influenced by a deeply felt orthodox piety and by the ideas of the civil lawyers He shows that, although Richard's kingship resembled that of other rulers of the period, unlike theirs, his reign ended in failure because of tactical errors and contradictions in his policies. For all that he promoted the image of a distant, all-powerful monarch, Richard II's rule was in practice characterised by faction and feud. The king was obsessed by the search for personal security: in his subjects, however, he bred only insecurity and fear. A portrait of a complex figure, this book is suitable reading for anyone with an interest in the politics and culture of the English middle ages.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49506735554833,"sku":"GOR002229660","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49615046902033,"sku":"GOR001874842","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49972784496913,"sku":"GOR013826307","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50032184262929,"sku":"CIN0300070039A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50922612883729,"sku":"CIN0300070039G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51721793569041,"sku":"CIN0300070039VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51873581826321,"sku":"GOR005736582","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300070039.jpg?v=1750812840"},{"product_id":"three-richards-book-nigel-saul-9781852852863","title":"The Three Richards","description":"The three Richards who ruled England in the middle ages were among the most controversial and celebrated English kings. HISTORY  The essays collected here present the fruits of the most recent research on aspects of the politics and culture of fourteenth-century England. Among the topics considered are the size and structure of magnates' households and retinues, Edward II's relationship with Piers Gaveston, court venues and the image presented by royal justice, the pattern of clergy ordinations, and the Despensers' patronage of Tewkesbury Abbey. Three essays deal with aspects of Richard II's reign, two reassessing the so-called `tyranny',  and a third looking at the inter-relation of English and Irish politics. The final essays look at general but related themes, the administration of royal justice and the role of morality in the exercise of public office. Ground-breaking in its treatment of the subject in an historical context, it explores medieval monuments both in terms of their social meaning and the role that they played in the religious strategies of the commemorated. Attention is given to the production of monuments, the pattern of their geographical distribution, the evolution of monument types, and the role of design in communicating the monument's message.  A major theme is the self-representation of the commemorated as reflected in the main classes of effigy-those of the clergy, the knights and esquires, and the lesser landowner or burgess class, while the effigial monuments of women are examined from the perspective of the construction of gender. While seeking to use monuments as windows onto the experiences and lives of the commemorated, it also exploits documentary sources to show what they can tell us about the influences that helped shape the monuments. An innovative chapter looks at the construction of identity in inscriptions, showing how the liturgical role of the monument limited the opportunities for expressions of self.  Nigel Saul seeks to place monuments at the very centre of medieval studies, highlighting their importance not only for the history of sculpture and design, but also for social and religious history more generally.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50056303673617,"sku":"GOR005718725","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199215987.jpg?v=1751101391"},{"product_id":"decorated-in-glory-book-nigel-saul-9781910839461","title":"Decorated in Glory","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50254504198417,"sku":"GOR011395419","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53116979249425,"sku":"GOR014751569","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1910839469.jpg?v=1751379848"},{"product_id":"st-george-s-chapel-windsor-book-nigel-saul-9781904349839","title":"St George's Chapel, Windsor","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50303885279505,"sku":"GOR006226493","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1904349838.jpg?v=1751347886"},{"product_id":"scenes-from-provincial-life-book-nigel-saul-9780198200772","title":"Scenes from Provincial Life","description":"This book looks at the world of the medieval gentry through the eyes of three well-documented families in East Sussex -- the Etchinghams of Etchingham, the Sackvilles of Buckhurst, and the Waleyses of Glynde.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50479282979089,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50479283667217,"sku":"GOR002256278","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198200773.jpg?v=1751323476"},{"product_id":"knights-and-esquires-book-nigel-saul-9780198218838","title":"Knights and Esquires","description":"Looking in detail at 14th-century Gloucestershire, the author examines the role of the gentry in their communities, government, military service, and the economy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50999975280913,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999978033425,"sku":"NIN9780198218838","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51691044274449,"sku":"GOR014363064","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52403410665745,"sku":"NLS9780198218838","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198218834.jpg?v=1751388904"},{"product_id":"lordship-and-faith-book-nigel-saul-9780198706199","title":"Lordship and Faith","description":"Lordship and Faith takes as its subject the many hundreds of parish churches built in England in the Middle Ages by the gentry, the knights and esquires, and the lords of country manors. Nigel Saul uses lordly engagement with the parish church as a way of opening up the piety and sociability of the gentry, focusing on the gentry as founders and builders of churches, worshippers in them, holders of church advowsons, and patrons and sponsors of parish communities. Saul also looks at how the gentry's interest in the parish church sat alongside their patronage of the monks and friars, and their use of private chapels in their manor houses. Lordship and Faith seeks to weave together themes in social, religious, and architectural history, examining in all its richness a subject that has hitherto been considered only in journal articles. Written in an accessible way, this volume makes a significant contribution not only to the history of the English gentry but also to the history of the rural parish church, an institution now in the forefront of medieval historical studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52332820791569,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52332821250321,"sku":"NLS9780198706199","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198706199.jpg?v=1758152795"},{"product_id":"death-art-and-memory-in-medieval-england-book-nigel-saul-9780198207467","title":"Death, Art, and Memory in Medieval England","description":"In this innovative and compelling book Nigel Saul approaches the world of the medieval gentry through the monuments they left behind them. The Cobham family left the largest and most spectacular collection of brasses in Britain in their church at Cobham, and other magnificent brasses in Lingfield, and elsewhere. Medieval brasses have hitherto been studied chiefly from an antiquarian or technical perspective; Nigel Saul for the first time shows how they served as a link between the living and the dead. Commemoration was inseparable from the wider dynamics of society. Through the brasses and through family history he takes us to the heart of gentry aspirations and fears, successes and disappointments. This extensively illustrated study offers a new paradigm for the study of medieval church monuments and makes a major contribution to our understanding of gentry culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52350540120337,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52350544347409,"sku":"NLS9780198207467","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780198207467.jpg?v=1758180242"},{"product_id":"fourteenth-century-england-i-book-nigel-saul-9780851157764","title":"Fourteenth Century England I","description":"Biennial volumes of new research on an eventful century coloured by the Plantagenet dynasty.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52615538868497,"sku":"NLS9780851157764","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780851157764.jpg?v=1761524395"},{"product_id":"st-george-s-chapel-windsor-in-the-fourteenth-century-book-nigel-saul-9781843831174","title":"St George's Chapel, Windsor, in the Fourteenth Century","description":"A definitive look at the early history of St George's Chapel, one of the most important medieval buildings in England. Developed and improved by Edward III, the Chapel became the spiritual home of his newly-instigated Order of theGarter and, in the process, a new Camelot for the English monarchy.  St George's Chapel, Windsor, is one of the most famous ecclesiastical foundations in Britain. Established in 1348, its origins are closely bound up with those of the Order of the Garter, which was founded by Edward III at the sametime. The collection of essays in this volume sets Windsor in its context, at the forefront of the political and cultural developments of mid-fourteenth-century England. They examine the early history of the Chapel, its tieswith Edward III's chivalric ambitions, the community of canons who served it, and its place in the institutional development of the English Church. Major themes are the role of the Chapel in the early history of the Order and itsinfluence on other collegiate foundations of the late middle ages; and much attention is devoted to the mighty building campaign at the Castle started by Edward III which made Windsor the grandest royal residence of its day.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52715901026577,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52715901092113,"sku":"GOR009227110","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781843831174.jpg?v=1762875314"},{"product_id":"age-of-chivalry-book-saul-nigel-9781855851177","title":"AGE OF CHIVALRY","description":"In this collection of essays, medieval historians appreciate the artefacts of the chivalric age and explore the nature of the society in which they were produced, the patrons who commissioned them and the ideals, both secular and religious, which inspired them.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52929620377873,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52929620541713,"sku":"GOR004209591","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781855851177.jpg?v=1765709290"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-nigel-saul.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
