Some of these ‘landmarks’ are individuals or groups of people who have exerted influence over the language: Charlemagne, Luther, the early modern grammarians and lexicographers. Others are studies of particular periods, places or groups which have not found their place in more narrative accounts: standardisation in the nineteenth century, the role of Low German, the state of German at the Stunde Null in 1945. An overarching theme is the role of deliberate intervention in the development of German, whether it took the form of education, prescriptivism, purism or political manipulation. The essays, a number of which were originally delivered as lectures in the University of Cambridge and all of which are by specialists in the field, combine to provide a history of the German language in its social context.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49555595460881,"sku":"GOR008815024","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3039118900.jpg?v=1751415651"},{"product_id":"intra-writer-variation-in-historical-sociolinguistics-book-markus-schiegg-9781800797031","title":"Intra-Writer Variation in Historical Sociolinguistics","description":"Intra-individual variation is an emerging research field in linguistics with a rapidly growing number of studies. In historical sociolinguistics, this trend has been slow, as it is still largely dominated by the macroscopic approaches of earlier sociolinguistics. Microscopic studies focusing on intra-individual variation in writing, i.e. intra-writer variation, however, are able to reveal how writers functionalize social or text-type variation for reasons such as audience design or persona creation. They may also provide insights into how ongoing changes were perceived by speakers and writers. In general, micro-approaches are able to uncover a wide array of possible factors influencing variation, which may not always carry sociolinguistic functions.      This volume comprises twenty-two research articles on a wide range of languages and periods, all closely connected by their focus on intra-writer variation in historical texts and by their use of empirical and corpus-based approaches. The studies demonstrate that the challenges that historical material have for research on intra-individual variation can certainly be met and that the insights gleaned from analysing variation in individual writers are considerable.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52126933745937,"sku":"NLS9781800797031","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781800797031.jpg?v=1757481363"},{"product_id":"lexikalische-variation-in-patientenbriefen-des-19-und-fruehen-20-jahrhunderts-book-sabrina-freund-9781803742717","title":"Lexikalische Variation in Patientenbriefen des 19. und fruehen 20. In German, there is a striking opposition between modern standard German, where the construction is virtually ungrammatical and considered to be sub-standard by most speakers, whilst, as this book shows, the construction is attested in all modern dialects as well as historic stages since 1350. In answering why auxiliary tun is ungrammatical in modern standard German, it is shown that the stigmatization of tun was caused by prescriptive grammarians in the 16th-18th century. Furthermore it is shown that the stigmatization of tun as bad German occurred in clearly discernible stages, from bad poetry (1550-1680), to bad written German (1680-1740) and finally to bad German in general (after 1740), thus providing evidence that the history of the standardization of German needs to take into account direct metalinguistic comments from prescriptive grammarians. The effectiveness of linguistic purism is also shown by evidence from two other constructions, namely polynegation and double perfect.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52648244445457,"sku":"NLS9783110170245","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783110170245.jpg?v=1762041663"},{"product_id":"ane-end-of-an-auld-song-book-sarah-van-eyndhoven-9781803745015","title":"«Ane end of an auld song?»","description":"This book examines the relationship between political identity and variation from a diachronic perspective, and how vernacular features could index political and ideological affiliations. Specifically, it explores the use of written Scots in the correspondence of Scottish politicians active during the Union of the Parliaments debates at the turn of the eighteenth century. Drawing from the frameworks of First, Second and Third Wave perspectives on variation, and combining macro-social statistical modelling with microsocial analysis, broad socio-political factors are empirically investigated alongside plausible stylistic intentions in conditioning observed linguistic behaviour. Detailing the process of building a corpus, identifying relevant Scots features, and presenting analyses across time, sociolinguistic factors, and individual recipients, this volume provides the first in-depth quantitative and sociolinguistic examination of early modern Scots and its expanding indexical roles.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52657761419537,"sku":"NLS9781803745015","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781803745015.jpg?v=1769080494"},{"product_id":"linguistic-purism-in-the-germanic-languages-book-nils-langer-9783110183375","title":"Linguistic Purism in the Germanic Languages","description":"Purism is an aspect of linguistic study which appeals not only to the scholar but also to the layperson. Somehow, ordinary speakers with many different mother tongues and with no formal training in linguistics share certain beliefs about what language is, how it develops or should develop, whether it has good or bad qualities, etc. The topic of linguistic purism in its many realisations is the subject of this volume of 19 articles selected from the contributions presented at a conference at the University of Bristol in 2003.    In particular, the articles deal with the relationship of purism to historical prescriptivism, e.g. the influence of grammarians in the 17th and 18th centuries, to nationhood, e.g. the instrumentalising of purism in the standardisation of Afrikaans or Luxembourgish, to modern society, e.g. the existence of puristic tendencies in computer chatrooms, to folk linguistics, e.g. lay perceptions of different varieties of English, and to academic linguistics, e.g. the presence of puristic notions in the historiography of German or English.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52663680762129,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52663681450257,"sku":"NLS9783110183375","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783110183375.jpg?v=1762272631"},{"product_id":"language-ideology-policy-and-practice-book-samantha-m-litty-9781803745565","title":"Language Ideology, Policy, and Practice","description":"This book combines studies of a broad range of minority and minoritized languages from the past and present to examine the dynamics of changes in the status of language use and language perception. They address two fundamental questions of sociolinguistics, namely,      A. How is linguistic variation at speaker and\/or community level structured so that certain variants and varieties have a particular indexical value whereas others do not?   and   B. What language ideologies underpin our perceptions of the linguistic world, i.e. how do we perceive the way we speak, and\/or the way other people speak, and what do we do with this perception?      Chapters include discussions of a large number of languages, some of which have largely been ignored in much scholarly discussion, such as Californian Spanish, Maritime Sign Language, or Danish and Frisian in the Duchy of Schleswig, as well as marginalized varieties of bigger languages, such as Scots or Nynorsk. The chapters, many of which were presented at the 2022 HiSoN conference in Murcia, offer insights into processes of stigmatization and promotion and offer a comprehensive comparison between seemingly different case studies focused on a core set of research questions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52678882525457,"sku":"NLS9781803745565","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781803745565.jpg?v=1762309228"},{"product_id":"double-standards-book-stephan-elspa-9781803749402","title":"Double Standards","description":"Standardisation is not a natural form of language change. The aim of such efforts is usually to create a largely uniform standard, often backed by a strong standard language ideology. However, standard languages are sometimes Janus-faced. Additional standard varieties emerge, leading to situations with «double standards» or even «multiple standards».   This volume brings together fifteen contributions on «double standards» in twelve languages – and various standard varieties thereof – from three language families, thus providing a novel comparative view on standardisation. Three main aspects of the «double standards» concept are identified: the descriptive vs prescriptive notion of standards, the coexistence of standard varieties in pluricentric or pluriareal settings, and the impact of the cohabitation of several standards in native or foreign language teaching.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52975998435601,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52975998501137,"sku":"NLS9781803749402","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781803749402.jpg?v=1767349153"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-nils-langer.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
