Through the careful editing of photographer Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, the sequence of images coalesces into a narrative of women's empowerment. As photographic technology advances in the book--transitioning from daguerreotypes to color film--so too do the rights of the women pictured, who become increasingly mobile, expressive and exposed. Yet, regardless of the era they belong to, all of the women appear intensely alive, emboldened by their position before the camera.
Las Mexicanas underscores the intimate and powerful relationship between the photographic medium, women and those who were fortunate to have a camera in their hands. Many of the images in this edition originate from a private collection, accumulated over a decade of visits to the flea markets of Mexico City, with the assistance of connoisseurs and support from booksellers and merchants. This particularity gives the volume a unique value, attracting an audience interested not only in antique photography and collectibles, but also in social sciences, feminism and cultural representations. Mexican Portraits includes more than 350 portraits from over eighty well-known Mexican photographers, including Romualdo García, Agustín V. Casasola, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Enrique Metinides, and Graciela Iturbide. Including both contemporary and classic works, mostly created from the 1970s to the present, this diverse group of images has been selected by photographer and editor Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, presenting an idiosyncratic and personal perspective on this particular genre. This volume, guided by his choices, explores the frontiers of portraiture from very different perspectives and associations. At the center of his wide-ranging selection are two distinct notions embedded in the history of the portrait: mask and metamorphosis. The face is the most communicative part of the human body, with the ability both to reveal and to cover up emotions, creating an ever-fascinating tension between the temporary and the permanent. Organized into nine chapters, this beautifully illustrated book is a reflection on Mexican portraiture and identity, both individual and collective.
Published with Museo Frida Kahlo. When Frida Kahlo dies, Diego Rivera, Frida's husband, ex-husband and widower, asks the poet Carlos Pellicer to turn the Casa Azul into a museum so that the people of Mexico can visit it and admire the artist's work. Pellicer selected Frida's paintings that were in the house, as well as some drawings, photos, books and ceramics, preserving the spaces as the couple had adapted them to live and work. The rest of the objects, clothes, documents, drawings, letters and more than six thousand photographs that Frida collected throughout her life, were kept in the bathrooms converted into cellars. This formidable collection was hidden for more than half a century. A few years ago they decided to open the cellars, cabinets and trunks that protected it. The set of photographic images is a treasure that reveals the tastes and interests of the famous couple, not only in what the images tell but also in the annotations in the margin, and allows speculation about their phobias and attractions, it is even possible to document their family origins. Photography was always present for Frida, her father Guillermo Kahlo was one of the great photographers of the early 20th century in Mexico, of whom she kept some images of colonial architecture and a good number of self-portraits. In Frida's collection there is a list of great photographers: Man Ray, Brassaï, Martin Munkacsi, Pierre Verger, George Hurrel, Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Manuel and Lola Álvarez Bravo, Gisèle Freund and many others, including Frida Kahlo herself. . It is probable that she took several of the photos in the collection, although we are sure of her authorship only in a few that were closed in 1929.
Monasterio’s speculative photo series imagines the Mexico City that might have emerged without colonization Pablo Ortiz Monasterio (born 1952) offers a photographic perspective of Mexico City that captures its pre-Hispanic and colonial past through its surviving archaeological and architectural remnants.
