This book examines the work of three Latin translators of the Renaissance. The versions of Aristotle made by Leonardo Bruni (1370–1444) were among the most controversial translations of the fifteenth century and he defended his methods in the first modern treatise on translation, De interpretatione recta. Giannozzo Manetti (1396–1459) produced versions of Aristotle and the Bible and he too ultimately felt obliged to publish his own defence of the translator's art, Apologeticus. Desiderius Erasmus (c. 1469–1536) chose to defend his own translation of the New Testament, one of the most controversial translations ever printed, with a substantial and expanding volume of annotations. This book attempts to provide a broad perspective on the development of Latin writing about translation by drawing together the ideas of these three very different translators.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51092589248785,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51092593705233,"sku":"NIN9780521100540","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52140538954001,"sku":"NLS9780521100540","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0521100542.jpg?v=1750782795"},{"product_id":"richard-dutch-thomson-c-1569-1613-book-paul-botley-9789004308244","title":"Richard ‘Dutch’ Thomson, c. 1569-1613","description":"Richard 'Dutch' Thomson (d. 1613), best known today as a Bible translator and one of the earliest English Arminians, was admired in his own day for his learning. This book provides the first biography of Thomson. It maps his connections with his contemporaries, reconstructs his reading, and edits his surviving correspondence, some seventy-eight letters. Thomson moved among the greatest scholars of his day, and was good friends with Joseph Scaliger and Isaac Casaubon. He travelled in Italy, Germany, and the Low Countries, became a member of five universities, and worked with manuscripts in the libraries in England, Florence, Geneva, Heidelberg and Leiden. Modern scholarship, working within national boundaries, has tended to see only a part of the whole picture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52654061420817,"sku":"NLS9789004308244","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789004308244.jpg?v=1768557681"},{"product_id":"latin-translation-in-the-renaissance-book-paul-botley-9780521837170","title":"Latin Translation in the Renaissance","description":"Latin translations of Greek works have received much less attention than vernacular translations of classical works. Author Paul Botley examines the origins and diffusion of 21 Greek grammars composed during the period, explores the development of Greek lexicography during the Renaissance and its relationship with surviving ancient and Byzantine Greek lexica, and studies the fortunes of the Greek authors known to have been used by Renaissance students. The book concludes with two appendices that catalog all Greek grammatical and lexical works printed before 1530.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53223620575505,"sku":"NIN9781606180020","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781606180020.jpg?v=1772997289"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-paul-botley.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
