It is a blow-by-blow account of the rise of corruption in Irish politics and planning, focusing in particular on the unholy alliance forged between crooked politicians, planners and builders in the Greater Dublin area. Paul Cullen offers the first comprehensive account of planning corruption in Dublin. He draws together the various strands investigated by the Flood Tribunal in a coherent narrative, built upon the manoeuvres of a self-serving and secret network of selfish, greedy men. He traces the repeated attempts to expose the irregularities that many suspected and none could prove. He reminds us of the crippling effect of planning corruption on the lives of ordinary citizens. He recalls the early days of Flood, when it appeared to be going nowhere. Then Frank Dunlop began to sing. And Dunlop's song led on to greater things: to George Redmond being nabbed at Dublin Airport coming back from the Isle of Man with IR Punt300,000 in his bag; to Liam Lawlor going to jail; to the exposure of Ray Burke's interesting accounting and banking practices; to the lowdown - at last - on the builders Brennan and McGowan. There is also the grand guignol of James Gogarty. Sometimes angry, sometimes unwittingly hilarious, always gripping, this is a terrific read. The current consensus suggests that thorps were minor settlements dependent in some way on more central places. This study develops existing work by integrating linguistic and archaeological approaches and, for the first time, considers the thorps of the Danelaw along with the throps of the south. A compelling connection is revealed between the creation of these place-names and fundamental changes taking place in the English landscape between AD 850 and 1250. Far from being marginal to settlement patterns, it is argued that thorps may have played an integral part in developments that revolutionised agricultural practice across a large belt of the country at that time. This study clearly demonstrates that general descriptions such as 'secondary settlement' or 'dependent outlying farmstead or hamlet' are inadequate for thorps; rather we should be looking to discover the precise characteristics that defined these places and which dictated the names they were given.  The authors consider the siting of thorps and throps in relation to the landscape and to soil types in particular. Amply demonstrating the value of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of early medieval settlement in England, the authors are able to draw important conclusions about the changes in farming that swept the country during this period and by association the process of village nucleation. By examining both the chronology of place-names in thorp and throp and their qualifying elements (notably the presence or absence of personal names), it appears possible to chart both the speed at which arable enterprises farmed in severalty converted to communal cultivation as well as the direction in which the changes spread. There is a sense of real excitement as many fresh insights are revealed in the course of the book.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50176024117521,"sku":"GOR010805153","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50327395729681,"sku":"GOR013928559","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B007RD1PMA.jpg?v=1750726100"},{"product_id":"outsider-book-paul-cullen-9781399755863","title":"Outsider","description":"'A remarkable story, a real page-turner' JOE DUFFY  'Powerfully written ... a gripping narrative' FINTAN O'TOOLE  The remarkable story of one man's journey from the edge of death to the heart of a hidden past.  Adopted at age three, Paul Cullen always felt like an outsider. After a near-fatal fall from Germany's highest peak in 2017 left him broken - physically and emotionally - he faced a personal reckoning. As he lay injured on the mountain, he knew that if he survived, he could no longer avoid the questions that had haunted him since childhood.  What happened in those missing early years? Who cared for him before his adoption? And why was it so hard to find the truth?  Outsider follows Paul's search for answers, from a mother and baby home in 1960s London to a suburban estate in 1970s Dublin, in a house lit with love but shadowed by a darker truth. As his body heals, he pieces together the fragments of his identity, confronting the silence of a closed adoption system and the emotional legacy of a hidden past.  Courageous and deeply personal, Outsider is a powerful story of survival, belonging and the enduring human need to know where we come from.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52489705685265,"sku":"NGR9781399755863","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53240991482129,"sku":"NLS9781399755863","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53580076286225,"sku":"GOR014969318","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781399755863.jpg?v=1774951336"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-paul-cullen.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
