Overnight, she had become a sensation - in every sense. Yet only three years earlier, Riley was virtually unknown. How did success arrive so suddenly?A Very Very Person is the first biography of Bridget Riley and addresses that tantalising question. Focusing on her early years, it tells the story of a remarkable woman whose art and life were entwined in surprising ways.This intimate narrative explores Riley's wartime childhood spent in the idyllic Cornish countryside, her subsequent struggles to find her way as an artist, and the personal crises and challenges she faced before finally arriving as one of the world's most celebrated artists.The author of this biography is Paul Moorhouse - Senior Curator of 20th-Century Collections and Head of Collections Displays (Victorian to Contemporary) at the National Portrait Gallery, London.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49565639311633,"sku":"GOR009901252","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49739131552017,"sku":"NGR9781909932500","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50306080932113,"sku":"CIN1909932507G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50694294667537,"sku":"GOR010116229","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51052873941265,"sku":"NIN9781909932500","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52394230219025,"sku":"GOR014515445","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52486813155601,"sku":"NLS9781909932500","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1909932507.jpg?v=1750835006"},{"product_id":"long-richard-a-moving-world-book-paul-moorhouse-9781854374509","title":"Long, Richard: A Moving World","description":"Long's work is founded on a deep affinity with nature, involving his direct engagement with its space and materials. This book, like the exhibition it accompanies, surveys the development of Hodgkin's portraiture from its beginnings in 1949 to the present, including new paintings. The narrative is structured chronologically, with thematic sections devoted to conflicting pairs – ‘Royalty and the Assassin’, ‘Leaders and Followers’, ‘The Valiant and the Damned’ – which reveal the radical differences between those caught up in the conflict in terms of their respective roles, aspirations, experiences, and, ultimately, their destinies. ‘Leaders and Followers’, for example, examines the dichotomy between the representation of senior military leaders such as Blumer, Foch, Haig and Hindenburg, who were responsible for directing the war, and that of the ordinary soldiers charged with executing it. While portraits of the generals emphasise their personal profile, gallantry and the trappings of military power, paintings of the rank and file are characterised by a tendency to anonymity, in which individual identity was subsumed with the impression of ‘types’. Claude Rogers’s imposing painting Gassed, for instance, presented the individual soldier as a kind of cipher, a depersonalised embodiment of common, degraded experience. Illustrated throughout with images both well known and less familiar, the book concludes with a section entitled ‘Tradition and the Avant-Garde’, which focuses on the struggle artists faced in finding an appropriate language in which to depict those who had experienced the unimaginable horror at the front: either by resorting to the steadying hand of tradition or a radical visual language of expressive distortion.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49629657432337,"sku":"GOR007276571","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51747241558289,"sku":"GOR011649787","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53058688614673,"sku":"CIN1855144689G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53460143898897,"sku":"GOR007364206","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1855144689.jpg?v=1751379480"},{"product_id":"gerhard-richter-portraits-book-paul-moorhouse-9781855143975","title":"Gerhard Richter Portraits","description":"Rebelling against the glamor and materialism of Pop Art in the 1960s Gerhard Richter created a powerful body of work rooted in the ordinary, everyday reality of the observed world. This book is the first major survey of Richter's portraits from this era to the present day and represents a major advance in the understanding and appreciation of the artist's work. By examining his portraits in unprecedented detail and scrutinizing the sophisticated ways in which he has challenged and extended the genre of portraiture, the startling range of Richter's source material is fully revealed.In the early 1960s Richter used photographs from magazines, newspapers and his own collection to eschew the abstract, painterly ethos of the preceding generation. His images depicted more recognizable subjects instead: people, family groups, individuals in newspaper stories, animals, buildings and ordinary objects, all rendered in a flat, deliberately impersonal style that alluded to the photographic origins of the imagery. These early monochrome images established a distinctive way of working: Richter's photographically derived images were manipulated to obscure or blur the definition of the original. They seem strangely removed from reality as a result, and pose questions about the nature of photography, identity and the way images of the real world are perceived and understood. As Richter himself has commented, his work engages with 'persistent uncertainty'.\"Gerhard Richter Portraits\" maps out the artist's principal preoccupations and main lines of development via themes that include Private Images (focusing on the artist's use of personal photographs), Public Images (examining images from a range of media-derived sources), Art History (focusing on images of Richter's associations within the art world) and Personal History (in which the artist's preoccupation with his family and his own image take center stage).Published to accompany the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London 26 February - 31 May 2009 key sales points: New and accessible scholarship redefines Richter as an accomplished portraitist. A clear chronological and thematic structure invites the reader to evaluate almost half a century of the artist's work. This book features an in-depth analysis of the artist's oeuvre, revealing the true meaning behind Richter's working method, practice and style. It includes over 100 beautifully reproduced key paintings from major international public and private collections.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50011349156113,"sku":"GOR006243179","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51907455254801,"sku":"GOR009980138","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1855143976.jpg?v=1751249406"},{"product_id":"albert-irvin-book-paul-moorhouse-9780853317197","title":"Albert Irvin","description":"This is the first monograph on the British p ainter Albert Irvin, whose abstract paintings are among the most exuberant and colourful work produced in Britain today. Belonging to no particular artistic movement, he developed through cubist and surrealist phases and later attained a mature, individual idiom whose preoccupation with the depiction of a human presence in an enveloping space may be seen in relation to contemporary existentialist concerns with defining the place and purpose of man in a godless universe. Taking its title from Jean--‐Paul Sartre, who described Giacometti’s endeavour to give `sensible expression’ to `pure presence’, the book explores the artist’s work in relation to existentialist ideas. Spanning painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking, Giacometti’s oeuvre ranges from idiosyncratic surrealist objects to intensely observed images of the human figure, with images of particular individuals at the centre. This book, like the exhibition it accompanies, looks at the various phases of the artist’s career and explores in detail his depiction of his main sitters, including his mother; Diego his brother; his wife Annette; Jean Genet the playwright; Caroline, a prostitute; and his friends Yanaihara and Lotar. Early drawings, paintings and sculptures of members of his family and his own image demonstrate Giacometti’s awareness of post--‐ impressionist and divisionist styles. After moving to Paris in 1922, until the late 1930s he made progressively abstracted images of a range of sitters. From 1946 Giacometti resumed painting and depicting an individual human presence became central to his work. After 1954, when he began making sculpture from life, increasingly his portraits evolved as the outcome of an ongoing dialogue between painting and sculpture. Giacometti subjected the human image to a radical process of interrogation and transformation in which the exploration and representation of flesh, presence, distance and space are vital, interacting elements. As a result, a human presence seems poised between being and non--‐ being, providing the basis for Giacometti’s reputation as one of the most innovative artists of the last century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51394167963921,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51394168062225,"sku":"GOR007672929","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52723718947089,"sku":"GOR014599020","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1855145324.jpg?v=1751346404"},{"product_id":"into-seeing-new-roger-hilton-book-paul-moorhouse-9781854377111","title":"Into Seeing New: Roger Hilton","description":"Roger Hilton began constructing bold designs of irregular shapes in strong colours in the 1950s, influenced by art informel, by his friend the Dutch artist Constant, and by the works of Mondrian. However, his association with the artists in St Ives - consolidated by his frequent visits to the town from the late 1950s - undoubtedly underpinned the landscape associations apparent in his work of the period. Hilton's use of rich colour and texture, evoking the rhythms of natural phenomena, led to an affinity with the modernists working in St Ives during the period. The colourful and dynamic images of women he created successfully bridged the gap between abstraction and figuration and also between images of the figure and the landscape. His significance to and influence on the colony was reinforced by his move to St Just in 1965. Accompanying an exhibition at Tate St Ives, this finely produced catalogue highlights key aspects of Hilton's artistic development and explains his importance in the history of British painting.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51510063563025,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51510063792401,"sku":"GOR002350422","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53606771491089,"sku":"GOR012966622","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1854377116.jpg?v=1750898846"},{"product_id":"richard-hudson-book-paul-moorhouse-9780847843190","title":"Richard Hudson","description":"Richard Hudson (b. 1954, Yorkshire, UK) began working on his organic forms and sculptures at a relatively late age after many years of traveling. Drawing inspiration from luminaries such as Henry Moore, Jean Arp, and Constantin Brancu?i, Hudson creates work that is meticulously refined, timeless, and contemporary. Hudson s imaginative forms are frequently emblematic of the human figure and, at the same time, possess reflective surfaces and evoke surreal reflections of the environment.   This landscape-format book illustrates a wide range of Hudson s work, from never-before-seen models and sketches to miniature and monumental pieces, including his major installations at Chatsworth, notably Frog with Fly in 2015 and Tear in 2016, and his numerous commissions globally, such as Love Me in Donum Sculpture Park, California, in 2016, and a second version in Valle de Bravo, Mexico, in 2021. Despite the immense size of these installations, Hudson s creative process nevertheless remains distinctively unassuming, studio-based, private, and introspective. This book substantiates Hudson s cultural impact, positioning him as a pivotal figure in contemporary sculpture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51632095494417,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51632095691025,"sku":"NGR9780847843190","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52606282170641,"sku":"NIN9780847843190","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/084784319X.jpg?v=1754173157"},{"product_id":"bridget-riley-book-paul-moorhouse-9781909932203","title":"Bridget Riley","description":"Examining a breakthrough moment in Bridget Riley's career, this volume illustrates the importance of colour to the artist's investigation of visual contrast and perception.During the early 1960s, Riley's monochromatic work employed elementary shapes to co","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52849826955537,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52849827053841,"sku":"NIN9781909932203","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781909932203.jpg?v=1764879745"},{"product_id":"bridget-riley-new-paintings-and-gouaches-book-paul-moorhouse-9781905464012","title":"Bridget Riley: New Paintings and Gouaches","description":"Catalogue from a 2006 London exhibition of new and energetic curvilinear works by celebrated British Op artist Bridget Riley  her first UK show since her major retrospective at Tate Britain in 2013.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53037036306705,"sku":"NIN9781905464012","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781905464012.jpg?v=1768761327"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-paul-moorhouse.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
