It provides a critical overview of art at the beginning of the 21st century. Youth is a highly relevant factor in the development of these works, just as it has been in the advancement of contemporary music and literature, and even the sciences. Young artists are now among today's most critically discussed and visible practitioners. All the artists featured in this collection graduated from prestigious colleges of art in Britain, the United States, Germany and Japan, and their success has raised the profile of art schools and the issue of their increasingly important role. While confident in their conception, execution and theatrical vigour, the works included here also represent a fragile moment in the artists' development. The art clearly demonstrates the impact of the particular art school and regional identity. Along with the complex network of travelling critics and curators, international exhibitions, regional and global art journals, and ambitious galleries and collectors, art schools have emerged as important crossroads for recent art's shared themes and discourses, and have served as both incubator and platform for new art. A series of specially commissioned essays examines the art school's role and the relation of an international art world to local practice. Also included are critical texts examining the artist and individual works, accompanied by full colour reproductions. Among the artists featured are Matthew Barney, Julie Becker, Damien Hirst, Sharon Lockhart, Chris Ofili, Jason Rhoades, Diana Thater, Yutake Sone, Rachel Whiteread, and Jane and Louise Wilson.
Part of a generation of artists that emerged in postwar Los Angeles, Ken Price transformed the art of ceramic sculpture. In his work, Price found inspiration in a diverse array of sources, including the Bauhaus school, traditional Southwestern pottery, and the counter-culture styles of the 1960s. Working with glazes and coloring his pieces with multiple layers of acrylic paint and making numerous intimate, smaller pieces as opposed to grand vessels, Price placed his own original stamp on the medium. This generously illustrated book also delves into Price's works on paper, which echo his sculptures in their brilliant colors and fantastical lines. This book fully integrates Price's sculptural work and his drawings. A scholarly essay explores Price's practice across different media as related to the tradition of ceramics and history of artistic modernism. Featuring more than 200 illustrations, the book offers readers in-depth access to Price's creative process. Ken Price emerges here as a multi- faceted, cheerful iconoclast, both erudite and exuberant in his work and life.
This lavishly illustrated, official book showcases the heritage and innovation of Liberty, a one-of-a-kind London department store that has served as tastemaker to the public since 1875.

Liberty is the chosen resort of the artistic shopper.-- Oscar Wilde

Since 1875, Liberty has been synonymous with luxury. Painting the Void: 1949-1962 focuses on one of the most significant consequences of the rise of gestural abstraction in twentieth-century painting: artists' literal assault on the picture plane. Responding to the social and political climate of the postwar period--especially the crisis of humanity resulting from the atomic bomb--international artists ripped, cut, burned, or affixed objects to the traditionally two-dimensional canvas. The volume seeks to identify the multiple strains of proto-feminist practices, characterized by abstraction and repetition, which rejected the singularity of the masterwork and rearranged sculptural form to be contingent upon the way the body moved around it in space. The catalogue begins in the immediate post-war era, with the first section spanning the late 1950s through the 1950s. Featuring historically important predecessors including Ruth Asawa, Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, Claire Falkenstein and Louise Nevelson, this section examines abstraction based on the human figure and the influence of the unconscious. The second section covers the decades of the 1960s and 1970s, and includes Magdalena Abakanowicz, Lynda Benglis, Heidi Bucher, Gego, François Grossen, Eva Hesse, Sheila Hicks, Marisa Merz, Mira Schendel, Michelle Stuart, Hannah Wilke, and Jackie Winsor, a generation of post-minimalist artists who ignited a revolution in their use of process-oriented materials and methods. In the 1980s and 1990s, the period explored in the third section, artists Phyllida Barlow, Isa Genzken, Cristina Iglesias, Liz Larner, Anna Maria Maiolino, Senga Nengudi, and Ursula von Rydingsvard moved beyond singular, three-dimensional objects toward architectonic works characterized by repetition, structure, and design. The final section is comprised of post-2000 works by artists Karla Black, Abigail DeVille, Sonia Gomes, Rachel Khedoori, Lara Schnitger, Shinique Smith, and Jessica Stockholder, artists who create installation-based environments, embracing domestic materials and craft as an embedded discourse.
Sigmund Freuds Discovery of Psychoanalysis explores the psychoanalytic dimensions of the biographical facts of Freuds life.

"The papers in this book range widely over psychoanalysis, literature and philosophy. Early in his career, he made deceptively simple sculptures of everyday objects--beginning with sinks and moving on to domestic furniture such as playpens, beds and doors. In the 1990s, his practice evolved from single works to theatrical room-sized environments. In all of his work, Gober's formal intelligence is never separate from a penetrating reading of the socio-political context of his time. His objects and installations are among the most psychologically charged artworks of the late twentieth century, reflecting the artist's sustained concerns with issues of social justice, freedom and tolerance.
