It was therefore strategically and commercially important. Its population was mostly Gentile but a large company of Jews with their Synagogue exerted a strong influence upon the Gentiles.??The gospel came to Thessalonica through the apostle Paul and his companions and some of the Jews and many of the Gentiles were saved. It is the firm conviction of Phillip Harding that just as the Thessalonian believers needed the grace of God to live for Him, so do we today.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49513431105809,"sku":"GOR013445506","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1904064930.jpg?v=1778320208"},{"product_id":"from-the-end-of-the-peloponnesian-war-to-the-battle-of-ipsus-book-phillip-harding-9780521299497","title":"From the End of the Peloponnesian War to the Battle of Ipsus","description":"The second volume of Translated Documents of Greece and Rome is a collection of English translations with commentary and bibliography, ancient and modern, of the major inscriptions and historical fragments relating to the history of Greece in the fourth century BC. The book is designed to supplement existing translations of the extant historical works of the period, so that the student who knows neither Greek nor Latin can study the fourth century in greater depth than has previously been possible. The period covered by this collection includes the restoration of the democracy at Athens in 403\/2, the creation of the Second Athenian Naval League, the Theban hegemony, the Sacred and Social Wars, the rise of Philip of Macedon, the career of his son Alexander, the Lamian War and, finally, the first rounds of the battle for the succession. There are documents from places as far apart as Priene and Tegea, but the majority come from Athens. This collection includes such material as alliances and peace treaties, honorific decrees, catalogues of temple deposits and naval equipment, laws, accounts, dedications, legal decisions, royal correspondence, constitutions and some important fragments of narrative histories. This book will be welcomed by teachers and students of ancient history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49566012145937,"sku":"GOR002977129","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50354465898769,"sku":"CIN0521299497G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51332178149649,"sku":"CIN0521299497VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52331378868497,"sku":"NLS9780521299497","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0521299497.jpg?v=1750976126"},{"product_id":"story-of-athens-book-phillip-harding-9780415338097","title":"The Story of Athens","description":"A leading authority in the field, Phillip Harding here presents the very first English translations of the six Athenian writers known as the Atthitographers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49580093505809,"sku":"GOR013585024","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51002201604369,"sku":"NIN9780415338097","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52521707897105,"sku":"NLS9780415338097","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415338093.jpg?v=1751135295"},{"product_id":"british-shell-shortage-of-the-first-world-war-book-phillip-harding-9781781554531","title":"British Shell Shortage of the First World War","description":"The severe shortage of munitions during the First World War increased the level of casualties in the battlefields; prevented the breakthrough of the German defences thus continuing a war of attrition; brought about the downfall of the great Liberal Government of the early twentieth century; and placed the British public on a total war footing for the first time in history. The British Shell Shortage of the First World War looks at shell manufacture and views the military and political battles of 1915, a time when decisions made by a government whose ideology was not compatible to war, had to answer for their decisions and management since war was declared. It details the battles of Neuve Chapelle and Aubers Ridge from the perspective of The Rifle Brigade, whose casualties in the latter battle was the catalyst of The Times article that resulted in a coalition government and the creation of a Ministry of Munitions. The political and military casualties are explained, along with the innovative creation of the Munitions Ministry, which led the way for industrial conscription, ensuring that the whole country stood behind their fighting men.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49601995702545,"sku":"GOR010307152","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50734495138065,"sku":"GOR009358215","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781554536.jpg?v=1751312108"},{"product_id":"diodoros-of-sicily-bibliotheke-historike-volume-1-books-1415-the-greek-world-in-book-phillip-harding-9781108499279","title":"Diodoros of Sicily: Bibliotheke Historike: Volume 1, Books 1415: The Greek World in the Fourth Century BC from the End of the Peloponnesian War to the Death of Artaxerxes II (Mnemon)","description":"The first in a planned three-volume translation of books 1420 of Diodoros of Sicily's Bibliotheke Historike, covering a crucial period of Greek history and providing an important competing source to Xenophon's Hellenika. This genre of historiography was invented in the fifth century by Hellanikos of Lesbos. Written in chronicle form, based upon kings and archons, it covered all aspects of Attic affairs from their mythical beginnings to the contemporary history of the individual author. It was a fascinating blend of patriotic fiction and historical fact. Though there were at least seven men who wrote Atthides, none of their works has survived intact. This volume presents in translation for the first time all the fragments of the Atthis of the fourth-century Athenian politician and historian, Androtion, and the testimonia for his life and career. Androtion was one of the most respected Atthidographers. His work was the basis of the Atthis of Philochoros, the last and greatest product of this genre. Androtion's Atthis was also a source for Aristotle's Constitution of the Athenians, though not it is argued, to the extent and in the manner usually believed. The genre and the individual Atthidographers, and Androtion and his career are discussed in the extensive Introduction. The inidividual fragments are analysed in detail in the Commentary. Throughout particular attention is devoted to Jacoby's theory of the political bias of the Atthidographers, which is shown to be unfounded.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50999997530385,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51000000807185,"sku":"NIN9780198721499","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52414570430737,"sku":"NLS9780198721499","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198721498.jpg?v=1751005325"},{"product_id":"didymos-on-demosthenes-book-phillip-harding-9780199283590","title":"Didymos: On Demosthenes","description":"This edition of the papyrus containing Didymos' comments on some of Demosthenes' speeches aims to provide the student with a new reading of the text, a facing translation that is carefully edited for those who cannot use the Greek to show what is extant and what is restored, and a detailed commentary that considers all issues related to the restoration of the text and to its historical content. At home, the participatory nature of the constitution required their presence not only in the lawcourts and assembly, but also in most of the minor magistracies; abroad, they were the driving force of the navy, which ensured Athens’ control of the Aegean and the Black seas. Their participation at all levels was made possible by state pay (for jury duty, attendance in the assembly, public office and military service). In the fifth century state pay was financed largely through the tribute paid by members of the empire, supplemented by the liturgical contributions of the rich and, beginning during the war, a property tax (the eisphora). In the fourth century, almost the whole burden was shouldered by taxation upon the wealthy, especially those who owned property. In this book, author Phillip Harding traces the major changes that occurred in the administration of the state that eventually deprived the lower classes of their supremacy and transferred power into the hands of the wealthy land-owners. Things changed radically after Athens’ defeat in the Lamian (or Hellenic) War in 322BC. Over the next several decades, restriction of the franchise, elimination of pay for some public offices, the loss of the navy, the increased dependence upon local grain from the larger estates in Attika, the removal of the tax burden from the rich by the ending of such major liturgies as the trierarchia and the choregia and the abandoning of the eisphora all contributed to this transformation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52522314105105,"sku":"NLS9780415873925","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53013898232081,"sku":"NIN9780415873925","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780415873925.jpg?v=1760576383"},{"product_id":"athens-transformed-404-262-bc-book-phillip-harding-9781138574311","title":"Athens Transformed, 404-262 BC","description":"During the heady, democratic days of the fifth and fourth centuries, the poorer members of Athenian society, the lower two classes of zeugitai and thetes, enjoyed an unprecedented dominance in both domestic and foreign politics.
