Within this honor guard mission, the 529\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e in Heidelberg was a sister-unit to the famed \u003cem\u003eOld Guard\u003c\/em\u003e in Washington, D.C.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs a result of all of the above, the 529\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e Military Police Company was held to an exceptionally high standard, and its proficiency soon became obvious. Only the best were selected for and retained in this unit.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn 1973, the first indication of the growing excellence of the 529\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e was made apparent. It was named \u003cem\u003eFirst Runner-Up\u003c\/em\u003e for the coveted \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eBrig. Gen. Jeremiah P. Holland Award\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e recognizing the best military police company in the United States Army worldwide. In 1974, the 529\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e stepped to the fore in an even bigger way, winning the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eHolland Award\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e outright as the top unit. Aside from its distinguished record in this historic town, this unit also had a very colorful cast of characters over the years, a few of whom are highlighted on the pages of this book.
