And only a pataphysician nurtured lovingly on surrealist excess could have come up with The Blue Flowers, Queneau's 1964 novel, now reissued as a New Directions Paperbook. To a pataphysician all things are equal, there is no improvement or progress in the human condition, and a message is an invention of the benighted reader, certainly not the author or his perplexing creations--the sweet, fennel-drinking Cidrolin and the rampaging Duke d'Auge. History is mostly what the duke rampages through--700 years of it at 175-year clips. He refuses to crusade, clobbers his king with the in toy of 1439--the cannon--dabbles in alchemy, and decides that those musty caves down at Altamira need a bit of sprucing up. Meanwhile, Cidrolin in the 1960s lolls on his barge moored along the Seine, sips essence of fennel, and ineffectually tries to catch the graffitist who nightly defiles his fence. But mostly he naps. Is it just a coincidence that the duke appears only when Cidrolin is dozing? And vice versa? When ‘Sally Mara’\nbegins her diary in January 1934, she is 17 years old and lives with her mother, older brother and\nyounger sister in south central Dublin. The everyday language is, of course, English, but she is writing\nin ‘newly-learned’ French to impress her beloved and just departed French tutor, a professional polyglot\nlinguist. To impress him even more, she decides to learn Irish in order to write a novel of some kind in\nIrish. Unreeling like a series of clips recorded during a stroll through Paris, the book is wickedly funny, but it is also a bittersweet meditation on how the river of forgetfulness carries away the city. This is the poet's love letter to Paris--a Paris that is always in the process of becoming superannuated. Rachel Galvin's lively, idiomatic version is the first complete translation available in English.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50215683719441,"sku":"CIN2070368491G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50789483184401,"sku":"GOR003335797","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/2070368491.jpg?v=1750772753"},{"product_id":"zazie-dans-le-metro-book-raymond-queneau-9782070448777","title":"Zazie dans le metro","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50243700326673,"sku":"GOR006739587","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52700778922257,"sku":"GOR006517824","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/2070448770.jpg?v=1751219933"},{"product_id":"exercises-in-style-book-raymond-queneau-9780714537504","title":"Exercises in Style","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50303243387153,"sku":"GOR002310316","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50428276965649,"sku":"GOR002126127","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714537500.jpg?v=1751231469"},{"product_id":"pierrot-mon-ami-book-raymond-queneau-9780947757151","title":"Pierrot Mon Ami","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50310086492433,"sku":"GOR003160107","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50616387305745,"sku":"GOR014013597","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52416292389137,"sku":"GOR002922450","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0947757155.jpg?v=1751298828"},{"product_id":"bark-tree-book-raymond-queneau-9780714501086","title":"The Bark Tree","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50327993418001,"sku":"GOR005008899","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52601875300625,"sku":"GOR006046601","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714501085.jpg?v=1751327632"},{"product_id":"zazie-dans-le-metro-book-raymond-queneau-9782070623198","title":"Zazie dans le metro","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50331755970833,"sku":"GOR013930361","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50877985587473,"sku":"GOR014101665","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50881559363857,"sku":"GOR004017518","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/207062319X.jpg?v=1750805909"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-raymond-queneau.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
