This highly readable treatment of anthropological theory discusses ideas in a conversational style accessible to undergraduates without oversimplifying the issues. It is unique in focusing on five key concepts—evolution, culture, structure, function, and relativism—placing these core ideas in the forefront to address the contributions of major theorists. It presents competing theoretical positions, engaging students in central debates in anthropology through time and exploring the implications of alternative perspectives.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50337710276881,"sku":"CIN0130971405G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0130971405.jpg?v=1771149253"},{"product_id":"western-apache-heritage-book-richard-j-perry-9780292765252","title":"Western Apache Heritage","description":"Mention \"Apaches,\" and many Anglo-Americans picture the \"marauding savages\" of western movies or impoverished reservations beset by a host of social problems. But, like most stereotypes, these images distort the complex history and rich cultural heritage of the Apachean peoples, who include the Navajo, as well as the Western, Chiricahua, Mescalero, Jicarilla, Lipan, and Kiowa Apaches. In this pioneering study, Richard Perry synthesizes the findings of anthropology, ethnology, linguistics, archaeology, and ethnohistory to reconstruct the Apachean past and offer a fuller understanding of the forces that have shaped modern Apache culture.  While scholars generally agree that the Apacheans are part of a larger group of Athapaskan-speaking peoples who originated in the western Subarctic, there are few archaeological remains to prove when, where, and why those northern cold dwellers migrated to the hot deserts of the American Southwest. Using an innovative method of ethnographic reconstruction, however, Perry hypothesizes that these nomadic hunters were highly adaptable and used to exploiting the resources of a wide range of mountainous habitats. When changes in their surroundings forced the ancient Apacheans to expand their food quest, it was natural for them to migrate down the \"mountain corridor\" formed by the Rocky Mountain chain.  This reconstruction of Apachean history and culture sheds much light on the origins, dispersions, and relationships of Apache groups. Perry is the first researcher to attempt such an extensive reconstruction, and his study is the first to deal with the full range of Athapaskan-speaking peoples. His method will be instructive to students of other cultures who face a similar lack of historical and archaeological data.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50347794301201,"sku":"CIN0292765258G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52783001895185,"sku":"CIN0292765258VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0333689429.jpg?v=1763479957"},{"product_id":"maxfield-parrish-identification-price-guide-book-richard-j-perry-9780963520203","title":"The Maxfield Parrish Identification \u0026 Price Guide","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50367511691537,"sku":"CIN0963520202G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51334607995153,"sku":"CIN0963520202VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0963520202.jpg?v=1751013659"},{"product_id":"apache-reservation-book-richard-j-perry-9780292765436","title":"Apache Reservation","description":"\"Indian reservations\" were the United States' ultimate solution to the \"problem\" of what to do with native peoples who already occupied the western lands that Anglo settlers wanted. In this broadly inclusive study, Richard J. Perry considers the historical development of the reservation system and its contemporary relationship to the American state, with comparisons to similar phenomena in Canada, Australia, and South Africa.  The San Carlos Apache Reservation of Arizona provides the lens through which Perry views reservation issues. One of the oldest and largest reservations, its location in a minerals- and metals-rich area has often brought it into conflict with powerful private and governmental interests. Indeed, Perry argues that the reservation system is best understood in terms of competition for resources among interest groups through time within the hegemony of the state. He asserts that full control over their resources—and hence, over their lives—would address many of the Apache's contemporary economic problems.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50558486085905,"sku":"CIN0292765436G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51124586643729,"sku":"CIN0292765436VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0292765436.jpg?v=1763483332"},{"product_id":"killer-apes-naked-apes-and-just-plain-nasty-people-book-richard-j-perry-9781421417516","title":"Killer Apes, Naked Apes, and Just Plain Nasty People","description":"Clearly written, conversational, and rationally argued, this book promotes sound and careful research while skewering the bogus ideological assertions that have been used to justify colonialism, slavery, gender discrimination, neoliberal economic policies, and the general status quo.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51700937949457,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51700937982225,"sku":"CIN1421417510G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1421417510.jpg?v=1750714303"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-richard-j-perry.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
