For every day of the year, the author has unearthed at least one unusual aristocratic death, from the famous (such as Cleopatra and her asp) to the less well-known (e.g. the Swedish king who ate too much pudding). Based on a number of scholarly sources for each entry, these four hundred or so 'summaries of royal mortality ' give an idiosyncratic and delightfully bizarre historical overview of the surprising ways in which the world's most powerful have perished. An appendix lists how the 'other half has died', including death by underwear, cricket ball and pea soup, while an index - from 'abbot, lecherous' to 'wrestling, with bears' - is of limited referential value but, like the rest of the book, is hugely enjoyable to read.
Was Ethelred, the Unready always late for breakfast? Was Ivan the Terrible simply impossible to live with? Exactly how often did Wilfrid the Shaggy get a haircut? These vital historical questions and others just as pressing are explored in this investigation into the vainglorious, unfortunate, and sometimes downright insulting names that pepper the history books. Anyone with a love the quirky side of history will enjoy the capricious world of noble nicknames, where military tacticians can be celebrated for their drinking habits (Michael the Drunkard), successful diplomats can be mocked for their diminutive stature (Ladislaus the Elbow-High), and a vicious tyrant can be kowtowed to (John the Good).
"The Good , the Bad and the Unready" is the perfect book for discovering how one man could be both Charles the Scourge of God and Charles the Affable. Or who exactly it was that Vlad impaled. Or how some eighteen people earned the appellation 'the Great' (and that's not including Anthony the Great Bastard and Anne the Great Whore). Or why Joan the Mad never went anywhere without her husband's corpse. The Reverend Robert Easton's irreverent guide to the most peculiar nicknames of history gives brief, funny biographies of not just the Good, the Bad and the Unready, but also the Shaggy, the Worthless, the Silly, the Elephant, the King of Slops and many more. Yet the richly diverse building traditions of Native Americans encompass much more, including specific structures for sleeping, working, worshipping, meditating, playing, dancing, lounging, giving birth, decision-making, cleansing, storing and preparing food, caring for animals, and honoring the dead. In effect, the architecture covers all facets of Indian life. The collaboration between an architect and an anthropologist, Native American Architecture presents the first book-length, fully illustrated exploration of North American Indian architecture to appear in over a century. Peter Nabokov and Robert Easton together examine the building traditions of the major tribes in nine regional areas of the continent from the huge plank-house villages of the Northwest Coast to the moundbuilder towns and temples of the Southeast, to the Navajo hogans and adobe pueblos of the Southwest. Going beyond a traditional survey of buildings, the book offers a broad, clear view into the Native American world, revealing a new perspective on the interaction between their buildings and culture. Looking at Native American architecture as more than buildings, villages, and camps, Nabokov and Easton also focus on their use of space, their environment, their social mores, and their religious beliefs. Each chapter concludes with an account of traditional Indian building practices undergoing a revival or in danger today. The volume also includes a wealth of historical photographs and drawings (including sixteen pages of color illustrations), architectural renderings, and specially prepared interpretive diagrams which decode the sacred cosmology of the principal house types.

This book is divided into two parts, Fiction and Memoirs, but the sections do overlap. I have learned that a small memory or experience is not a story but merely a Vignette. However, that Vignette can turn into a story with the help of some imagination. Therefore, all of these short pieces needed some sort of trigger to bring them to completion.

Some of them are based on early experiences in many places throughout the United States and especially in Northern California. Some are offshoots stemming from the many books I have read throughout the years and notes I have gleaned from my journals. I still keep a journal of events in my life as well as thoughts, dreams, and anything which might later turn into a story. In this book, I have merely taken experiences and my imagination to expand the material into hopefully, humorous, thought-provoking stories and memoirs.

As outlandish as this material may seem to the reader, rest assured that seemingly insignificant experiences can be turned into stories. In this short book, I included some material that started out in the real world and I have called this fiction but almost everything in these works started from an actual experience, dream or fantasy.

Especially the memoirs which all have some semblance of truth in them. Now as I read through them, it is hard for me to realize how close to my reality most of them are, or were. The first half is straight fiction although the stories all have at least a nugget of truth and reality in them. The one exception is Francis With An I. Some of them are based on my early experiences in many places throughout the United States, especially in Northern California. Some are offshoots stemming from the many books I have read throughout the years and notes I have gleaned from my journals.

The word Cobwebs refers to memories buried deep in my past. Echoes refers to many of the voices I still hear after a lifetime of having a variety of experiences. Footprints refers in both sections of the book to my many years of traipsing through mountains, foothills, and seashores with fellow Sierra Club members, friends, family members or by myself.
