Trent, in the south-east corner of Derbyshire, was a station without a town, its position and importance as an interchange junction for five main railway routes, through the plethora of junctions, served London, Birmingham, Derby, Chesterfield and Nottingham. Remarkably enough, trains could depart from opposite platforms, in opposite directions but to the same destination. There was also the constant procession of coal trains off the Erewash Valley line from the nearby Toton marshalling yard.  Also featured is the Derby Friargate to Nottingham Victoria, the Great Northern Railway line, and the former Great Central route, along with scenes at Saxby where the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, mainly single track line diverged, running via Bourne to East Coast resorts. Finally, there are scenes at Grantham, where changing engines in 1954 was the order of the day. Locomotives are photographed at work, at rest and awaiting a call for scrap.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49544523841809,"sku":"GOR009921577","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473896290.jpg?v=1750924028"},{"product_id":"from-clerk-to-controller-a-life-on-the-railways-1957-1996-book-roderick-h-fowkes-9781473844162","title":"From Clerk to Controller: A Life on the Railways 1957-1996","description":"'Like so many other boys of my generation, I wanted to be an engine driver; my dreams, however, were dashed in 1956 when I went for a medical at Derby. So much depended upon having perfect eyesight ...' So wrote the author in his introduction in Last Days of Steam on the LMS \u0026amp; BR, published in 2009. Now featuring all new colour photographs, From Clark to Contoller is an account of Roderick H. Fowkes' service on the railway, from 1966 until his retirement in 1996.  Reflecting on the demise of steam in the 1960s, and revisiting the author's experiences in Trent in 1957, the compelling story continues with 'some of the best times of a thirty-nine year career with BR', including Fowkes' years working in Control and the fulfilment of his lifetime ambition of moving to the West Country.  Filled with personal and memorable anecdotes, this book continues the extraordinary tale of the thirty-nine year British Railways career of a man deemed unsuitable for the footplate grade in 1957.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49579694719249,"sku":"GOR009105657","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49660742795537,"sku":"GOR013696601","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ LIKE_NEW \/ SBYB","offer_id":49910813622545,"sku":"CIN1473844169LN","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50626389049617,"sku":"GOR011715205","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473844169.jpg?v=1751371195"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-roderick-h-fowkes.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
