The author places the practice of ekphrasis within its cultural context, emphasizing the importance of the visual imagination in ancient responses to rhetoric, poetry and historiography. By linking the theoretical writings on ekphrasis with ancient theories of imagination, emotion and language, she brings out the persuasive and emotive function of vivid language in the literature of the period. This study also addresses the contrast between the ancient and the modern definitions of the term ekphrasis, underlining the different concepts of language, literature and reader response that distinguish the ancient from the modern approach. In order to explain the ancient understanding of ekphrasis and its place within the larger system of rhetorical training, the study includes a full analysis of the ancient technical sources (rhetorical handbooks, commentaries) which aims to make these accessible to non-specialists. The concluding chapter moves away from rhetorical theory to consider the problems and challenges involved in 'turning listeners into spectators' with a particular focus on the role of ekphrasis within ancient fiction. Attention is also paid to texts that lie at the intersection of the modern and ancient definitions of ekphrasis, such as Philostratos' Imagines and the many ekphraseis of buildings and monuments to be found in Late Antique literature.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49557829878033,"sku":"GOR013605225","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52679579992337,"sku":"NLS9781138247819","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1138247812.jpg?v=1750920094"},{"product_id":"virginia-woolf-book-ruth-webb-9780712346160","title":"Virginia Woolf","description":"Drawing on a wide variety of illustrative material, from manuscripts in Woolf's hand in The British Library, to photographs, portraits and paintings in many other collections, Ruth Webb discusses Woolf's life and works and examines why she continues to excite extremes of adoration or vilification among her readers. M. Forster and Virginia Woolf were members of the Bloomsbury Group and key literary figures at the forefront of an artistic movement known as Modernism in the early twentieth century, a movement which for English literature meant the innovative re-shaping of boundaries in form, narrative and language. Originally published in 1942, this book presents the historic text of the Rede Lecture, which was delivered by E. M. Forster in the Senate House, Cambridge on 29th May 1941, two months after Woolf's death. The lecture was also given in an alternate form at the Royal Institution of Great Britain on 5th March 1942. In this lecture Forster celebrates Woolf's colossal contribution to literature as well as challenges her work as both a fellow writer and friend. Capturing and illuminating the shifting mood and interests in literature at the time, this landmark lecture is a must-read for all literature scholars.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50346173137169,"sku":"CIN0195215591G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0195215591.jpg?v=1751389526"},{"product_id":"grumble-fast-book-ruth-webb-9780958743730","title":"Grumble Fast","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51009886945553,"sku":"NIN9780958743730","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0958743738.jpg?v=1751298364"},{"product_id":"me-and-mr-t-book-ruth-webb-9781664164185","title":"Me and Mr. T","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51248161259793,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51248163455249,"sku":"NIN9781664164185","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52350377427217,"sku":"NLS9781664164185","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1664164189.jpg?v=1750800479"},{"product_id":"walking-with-god-book-ruth-webb-9781664155817","title":"Walking with God","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51263577194769,"sku":"NIN9781664155817","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52331799773457,"sku":"NLS9781664155817","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1664155813.jpg?v=1751278004"},{"product_id":"something-to-think-about-book-ruth-webb-9781664150676","title":"Something to Think About","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51272891793681,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51272893890833,"sku":"NIN9781664150676","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52453690507537,"sku":"NLS9781664150676","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1664150676.jpg?v=1750863740"},{"product_id":"me-mr-t-book-ruth-webb-9781664151543","title":"Me \u0026 Mr. T","description":"This is a fictional love story of a hardworking, young woman, Janie Williams, who meet's a no good lazy young man, Terrell Peterson, known as Mr. T.
