That she succeeds is testament to a poet who has found comfort in her quirky, unsettling register. Nevertheless, that comfort never slides into complacency; 'Inklings' is a pamphlet that retains significant emotional ballast, the occasional direct line cutting hard to jolt the reader into recognition of new truths.  The contrast between the easy narrative lyric and the brutal chiselled lines is the tension that drives this striking debut. 'Sarah Westcott's poetry is exuberant, generous and edgy. The poems in this pamphlet offer a brilliant introduction to a talented writer'. - David Morley 'A high level of craft and finely nuanced language. The emotion in poems like 'Vegetable' is raw and should, reach many.' - Nathalie Teitler Sarah Westcott grew up in north Devon and lives in Kent with her family. Her poetry has been widely published in literary journals and anthologies, most recently Magma, Poetry Wales and Lung Jazz: Young British Poets for Oxfam. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Royal Holloway, University of London and a science degree.  Sarah has been commended in competitions including the Mslexia Poetry Competition in 2008 and 2010 and she won the inaugural Awel Aman Tawe Climate Change poetry competition in 2011.  After a spell teaching English abroad, she has worked as a newspaper journalist for many years. An excerpt from 'Inklings', her debut poetry pamphlet, was runner up in the Venture Award for poetry.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49527041949969,"sku":"GOR007858870","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51205029101841,"sku":"NIN9781905233397","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52141765918993,"sku":"NLS9781905233397","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1905233396.jpg?v=1751028930"},{"product_id":"bloom-book-sarah-westcott-9781800348707","title":"Bloom","description":"'Skilful patterning, sharp observation, sensuous evocativeness and startling leaps of metaphorical imagination give her poems a vivid, immediate impact, absorbing the reader in the experiences they present.' Here, the voiceless speaks, laments and sings - from the fresh voice of a spring wood to a colony of bats or a grove of ancient sequioa trees. Unafraid of using scientific language and teamed with a clear eye, Westcott's poems are drawn directly from the natural world, questioning ideas of the porosity of boundaries between the human and non-human and teeming with detail. A series of lyrical charms inspired by Anglo-Saxon texts draw on the specificity of the botanical and its spoken heritage, suggesting a relevance that resonates today. Westcott's poems are alive to the beautiful in the commonplace and offer up a precise honouring of the wild, while retaining a deeply-felt sense of connection with a planet in peril.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51052618318097,"sku":"NIN9781781382929","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51356358344977,"sku":"GOR009010871","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781382921.jpg?v=1751377898"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-sarah-westcott.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
