A town grew up around the monastery and by the thirteenth century Derry was a diocesan centre. But its modern history dates from the seventeenth century. Its history echoes that of Ulster in general. The Protestant plantation town withstood the famous Jacobite siege of 1689: thereafter it stood as a symbol of Protestant defiance while gradually attracting a Catholic population to areas outside the walls, like the Bogside. While the political history of the modern city is well known, its social history, that which tended to unite rather than divide, is less often celebrated. That is what this book does, in pictures. The earliest image dates from 1872, but most of the material covers the years from the 1930s to the 1960s. These glimpses of the city's past and of the people who made it embrace commercial life, sport, music (for which the city is justly famous) and the other aspects of the ordinary daily round. It also records the dreadful poverty of old, as well as the embittered politics. Art Byrne and Sean McMahon have assembled a remarkably wide selection of images, all of them drawn from private sources and most of them never seen before in print.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49515134091537,"sku":"GOR004661081","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49652477034769,"sku":"GOR013163052","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52723286278417,"sku":"GOR002728591","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0717136418.jpg?v=1750847640"},{"product_id":"derry-anthology-book-sean-mcmahon-9780856407260","title":"The Derry Anthology","description":"Derry, with its long tradition of learning, its turbulent history and its cross-fertilisation of Irish, English and Scottish cultures has always been a fertile ground for writing. This handsome new anthology, a sister volume to Patricia Craig's acclaimed Belfast Anthology, presents a wealth of writing about Derry city from earliest times to the present and includes fascinating extracts from fiction, history, poetry, letters and travel writing. The wide range of writers hints at Derry's eventful past - from St Columbkille through to John Wesley, William Thackeray and Mrs Alexander. In more recent times, writers like Sean O Faolain, Ben Kiely, Kathleen Ferguson, Nicholas Monsarrat, Brian Friel, Nell McCafferty, Jennifer Johnston, Eamonn McCann, Seamus Heaney, Michael Foley and Seamus Deane have all recorded vivid impressions of the city and its people. Researched and introduced by Derryman Sean McMahon, The Derry Anthology provides a complex and stimulating portrait of this ancient city.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49524831289617,"sku":"GOR007636715","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51084621873425,"sku":"GOR006186963","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0856407267.jpg?v=1751265553"},{"product_id":"rebel-ireland-book-sean-mcmahon-9781856354981","title":"Rebel Ireland","description":"The stories of these conflicts, with their scores of killings, torture, reprisals and long lasting bitterness are told concisely in this book. \"Easter 1916\" - features the rebellion which took place in Ireland 90 years ago was arguably the most momentous event in this country's history. \"The War of Independence\" - features the guerrilla war, characterised by marvellous courage and miserable cruelty. \"The Civil War\" - features few episodes in Irish history are as poignant, bloody and unnecessary. Yet his reputation as the founding father of Irish republicanism is still in the zenith. His name was used by Davis and Pearce almost as a mantra and his grave at Bodenstown, County Kildare, is one of the most hallowed of republican sites. In spite of often frustrating efforts for his country's independence, Tone retained his courage, wit and the sense of fun that made him a sterling friend and popular companion. One of the founders of the United Irishmen and an early defender of the rights of Catholics, he might have had many different careers if early ambitions had been fulfilled. That reputation was won mainly in what might otherwise have really been the Dark Ages. The Christian faith which had collapsed over most of Europe with the decline and fall of the western Roman empire still survived on the rocky fringes of the Atlantic seaboard. The 'pilgrims for Christ' as these Irish voyagers called themselves, spent the rest of their lives relighting a candle in the darkness and in spite of terrible deprivations, not least homesickness, re-establishing not only Christianity but the glories of classical learning which had fallen into their safe keeping. This book lists both saints and scholars (often in the same personality), their foundations and the works that made the period Ireland's truly golden age.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50046126817553,"sku":"GOR002597302","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50115533963537,"sku":"GOR002291947","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/185635346X.jpg?v=1751249690"},{"product_id":"celtic-wisdom-book-sean-mcmahon-9780862815615","title":"Celtic Wisdom","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50178248311057,"sku":"CIN0862815614G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53370765803793,"sku":"CIN0862815614VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0862815614.jpg?v=1751139732"},{"product_id":"carpe-diem-book-sean-mcmahon-9780811809313","title":"Carpe Diem","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50367589875985,"sku":"CIN0811809315G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52435926253841,"sku":"CIN0811809315VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53043951370513,"sku":"CIN0811809315A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53532090073361,"sku":"GOR014956034","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0811809315.jpg?v=1751107352"},{"product_id":"wee-joe-book-sean-mcmahon-9781905474356","title":"Wee Joe","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50472218820881,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50472219017489,"sku":"GOR005731418","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52723286409489,"sku":"GOR004106285","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1905474350.jpg?v=1750769331"},{"product_id":"poolbeg-golden-treasury-of-well-loved-poems-book-sean-mcmahon-9781853710087","title":"Poolbeg Golden Treasury of Well Loved Poems","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50499018359057,"sku":"GOR011455215","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50800091889937,"sku":"GOR007748157","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52853558280465,"sku":"GOR007322184","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1853710083.jpg?v=1751379073"},{"product_id":"history-of-county-derry-book-sean-mcmahon-9780717137992","title":"A History of County Derry","description":"County Derry dates from the time of the Plantation of Ulster, when lands to the west of the now extinct county of Coleraine were joined to it to form the modern county. It is bounded by Lough Foyle to the west, the Sperrin Mountains to the south and the River Bann to the east. Sean McMahon's history starts with a consideration of the county's topography. The hills at the south and centre have tended to cut off the Foyle Basin from the east and cause the gaze of Derry City to turn towards Donegal and the west. Likewise, the east of the county around Coleraine tends to look east towards Antrim, Belfast and Scotland. The east-west division is also marked by a preponderance of Protestant population in the east and Catholic in the west. The earliest discovered settlement in all of Irish history - Mount Sandel on the lower Bann - is in County Derry, dating to almost 6,000 b.c. In medieval times the site of the modern city was an important monastic centre associated with St Colmcille. The modern county begins its life with the Plantation, but it was the Industrial Revolution, bringing textile workers into Derry City from County Donegal, that effected the greatest transformation. Derry, which had hitherto been a walled Protestant town at the margin of the Plantation settlement, gradually acquired a Catholic majority whose political and national ambitions were frustrated by partition. The mixture of poverty and frustration that resulted eventually brought about the civil rights clashes of October 1968 that are generally reckoned to mark the start of the modern Troubles. Bloody Sunday in January 1972 was probably the single most notorious incident in the Troubles. Sean McMahon's history deals with all these public events, whilst celebrating the social and educational traditions and accomplishments of the city and county.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50633391702289,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50633392324881,"sku":"GOR002445563","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51735725703441,"sku":"GOR003099278","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0717137996.jpg?v=1751360410"},{"product_id":"little-bit-of-heaven-an-irish-american-anthology-book-sean-mcmahon-9781781178836","title":"A Little Bit of Heaven: An Irish American Anthology","description":"This nostalgic collection of Irish ballads and poems celebrates the rich history and culture of the Irish-American experience.    Spanning the early 19th century through the 1930s, these carefully selected pieces capture the hopes, dreams, and struggles of Irish immigrants as they built new lives in America. From the decorous parlours of the Irish middle class to the tumultuous vaudeville halls, these songs and verses paint a vivid picture of a people finding their place in a new land.    Iconic figures like 'Irish Molly-Os,' 'Mother Machrees,' and 'Dacent Irish Boys' come to life, embodying the spirit of a proud and resilient community.    Many of these pieces, such as ‘My Wild Irish Rose’ and ‘My Irish Molly’, still figure in the repertoire of Irish traditional groups. However, they owe far more to the era of vaudeville, music hall and Tin Pan Alley than to any Irish Music Tradition.    While some entries may lean into the \"Oirishness\" that purists love to critique, this collection embraces the sentimental charm that endeared these works to generations of Irish Americans. For them, these ballads and poems were a cherished connection to the green hills of a distant homeland, a badge of honour in their adopted country. Compiled with love and unapologetic nostalgia, A Little Bit of Heaven: An Irish American Anthology pays tribute to the enduring legacy of the Irish on both sides of the Atlantic. It is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the Irish-American experience through the power of song and verse.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51050244210961,"sku":"NIN9781781178836","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52584246771985,"sku":"NLS9781781178836","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781178836.jpg?v=1751247693"},{"product_id":"faces-of-the-west-book-sean-mcmahon-9780904651119","title":"Faces of the West","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51085942522129,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51085942685969,"sku":"GOR004143359","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52116217004305,"sku":"GOR002330305","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0904651118.jpg?v=1751077487"},{"product_id":"dark-remains-book-sean-mcmahon-9781456543044","title":"Dark Remains","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51309800816913,"sku":"NIN9781456543044","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1456543040.jpg?v=1751147449"},{"product_id":"derry-book-sean-mcmahon-9781905474387","title":"Derry","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51463089357073,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51463089455377,"sku":"GOR013421207","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52364830802193,"sku":"GOR010376006","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1905474385.jpg?v=1750996418"},{"product_id":"view-the-foyle-commanding-book-sean-mcmahon-9781906507718","title":"A View the Foyle Commanding","description":"With its 400th anniversary looming, Foyle College has commissioned a new high-quality book to celebrate both the past and the future of education in the city. Foyle College is poised on the edge of an exciting future - built on four centuries of tradition. Founded by the Merchant Taylor, Mathias Springham, in 1617, as the Free Grammar School, it became Foyle College in 1814 and eventually merged with the Londonderry Academical Institution in 1896. Further mergers took place among schools in the city until in 1976 the Foyle and Londonderry Amalgamation Act resulted in the city's first coeducational grammar school. An editorial team composed of former pupils and interested members of staff will draw on the substantial and detailed records of all predecessor schools to provide a vibrant illustrated portrait of the educational legacy.  First-hand pupil accounts of lived experiences from the early 20th century to the present will be a key feature of the book. This format of this book will be thematic and will include reminiscences by former pupils, staff and governors, as well as important events in the history of the College.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51547561885969,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51547561984273,"sku":"GOR007955147","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52604617916689,"sku":"GOR010230659","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1906507716.jpg?v=1750769734"},{"product_id":"social-control-and-public-intellect-book-sean-mcmahon-9781560004240","title":"Social Control and Public Intellect","description":"As the last presumptive founder of American sociology, Edward Alsworth Ross (1866u1951) was the first to secure its place in public discourse","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52123853455633,"sku":"NLS9781560004240","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781560004240.jpg?v=1757453550"},{"product_id":"social-intelligence-power-and-conflict-book-m-afzalur-rahim-9781138514690","title":"Social Intelligence, Power, and Conflict","description":"This volume is focused on the social intelligence (SI) of leaders. SI is generally defined as the ability to be aware of relevant social situational contexts; to deal with the contexts or challenges effectively; to understand others' concerns, feelings, and emotional states; and to interact appropriately in social situations and build and maintain positive relationships with others.  Beginning with a cross-cultural study of the social intelligence of leaders in the United States, the United Kingdom, Scotland, Hong Kong, and Thailand, the work moves on to discuss the influence of SI on creative performance. The findings of the study show that leaders' SI was positively associated with their creative performance in each of the five countries. Other contributions cover topics relating to SI such as social connection and executive compassion.  In addition, the volume also features five book reviews, a list of books received, and a detailed case study, titled \"Program Management for Global Software Development: A Case Study of the Windows Embedded Automotive Team\" by Paul Gratton. The work will be of use to those studying business, management, and economics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52666280345873,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52666281099537,"sku":"NLS9781138514690","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138514690.jpg?v=1762279546"},{"product_id":"social-control-and-public-intellect-book-sean-mcmahon-9781138514645","title":"Social Control and Public Intellect","description":"As the last presumptive founder of American sociology, Edward Alsworth Ross (1866u1951) was the first to secure its place in public discourse","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52679324991761,"sku":"NLS9781138514645","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138514645.jpg?v=1762310301"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-sean-mcmahon.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
