To the bureaucrat, archives contain little more than garbage, paperwork no longer needed; to the historian, on the other hand, the archive's content stands as a quasi-objective correlative of the living past. Twentieth-century art made use of the archive in a variety of ways--from what Spieker calls Marcel Duchamp's anemic archive of readymades and El Lissitzky's Demonstration Rooms to the compilations of photographs made by such postwar artists as Susan Hiller and Gerhard Richter. In The Big Archive, Sven Spieker investigates the archive--as both bureaucratic institution and index of evolving attitudes toward contingent time in science and art--and finds it to be a crucible of twentieth-century modernism. Dadaists, constructivists, and Surrealists favored discontinuous, nonlinear archives that resisted hermeneutic reading and ordered presentation. Spieker argues that the use of archives by such contemporary artists as Hiller, Richter, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Walid Raad, and Boris Mikhailov responds to and continues this attack on the nineteenth-century archive and its objectification of the historical process. Spieker considers archivally driven art in relation to changing media technologies--the typewriter, the telephone, the telegraph, film. And he connects the archive to a particularly modern visuality, showing that the avant-garde used the archive as something of a laboratory for experimental inquiries into the nature of vision and its relation to time. The Big Archive offers us the first critical monograph on an overarching motif in twentieth-century art.
How artists wield demonstration to question the status quo both aesthetically and politically, marshaling art and education as powerful agents of change.

Demonstration, in short, says- See here. It is the practice of pointing to something in order to explain or contest it. As such, Sven Spieker argues that demonstration has helped reshape art from the height of the Cold War to the late twentieth century, reformatting our understanding of how art and political engagement relate to each other. Focusing on Western Europe (especially Germany), Eastern Europe, and the United States, Art as Demonstration expands on contemporary discussions of art-as-protest, activism, and resistance. Spieker shows how a closer, more historical look at art's connection with demonstration reconnects us with earlier efforts, notably by the early twentieth-century avant-garde, to marshal art for the purpose of instruction and engagement.

Art as Demonstration reconceives the history of postwar art in Eastern and Western Europe from the perspective of demonstration, understood formally (as a technique for showing and pointing) as well as politically (as protest, resistance, etc.). Close analyses of individual artworks reveal how the deployment of demonstration has changed over time. Spieker shows how "protest" and "resistance" organize art and artists not only politically but also and especially formally and aesthetically-a development of particular importance in the Cold War art and politics of Eastern Europe. The book illustrates how from the 1960s onward demonstration radically changed the way artists thought about art- no longer as an object but as a form of education.
Essays explore contemporary artists' engagement with destruction, and how it has disrupted the perceived integrity of built structures and institutions.
The effects and meanings of destruction are central to the work of many of our most influential artists. Since the early 1960s, artists have employed destruction to creative ends. Here destruction changes from a negative state or passive condition to a highly productive category. The destructive subversion of media imagery aims to release us from its controlling effects. The self-destructing artwork extinguishes art's fixity as arrested form and ushers in the ephemeral and contingent open work.

This anthology explores artworks that convey the threat of destruction an how they have disrupted the perceived integrity of built structures and institutions. The handbook examines the mechanisms, relationships, and international agreements that enabled the organization of officially sponsored and state-organized art exhibitions after the Second World War. Apart from viewing such exhibitions as instances of Cold War diplomacy and propaganda, this book proposes a shift in the way readers view the Cold War, away from an emphasis on separation and opposition to a focus on cultural exchange and international solidarity. Throughout the book, art historians and visual culture experts provide contextual information about the main institutional actors who were responsible for organizing these exhibitions, and the personal as well as institutional or diplomatic channels involved in their hosting and curation. Despite their many differences, the shows explored in this book gesture to the notion of a socialist curatorial aesthetic in the shadow of the Cold War. Curating Socialism demonstrates how socialist exhibition culture developed, sometimes competing with, and sometimes cooperating with Western art worlds.
