Rarely is any thought given to the man himself. Plug the word Colle into your favorite search engine, and, if you are lucky, you might find a reprint of the slim 1936 book by Fred Reinfeld, Colle's Chess Masterpieces. Books on the Colle System - of which there are many - will be your main search results. However, Belgian master Edgard Colle is much more than a name connected to an opening system. He was one of the most dynamic and active chess players of the 1920s and early 1930s. Though his international career lasted barely ten years, Colle played in more than 50 tournaments, as well as a dozen matches. Moreover, he played exciting and beautiful chess, full of life, vigor, imagination and creativity. As with such greats as Pillsbury and Charousek, it was a tragedy for the game that his life was cut short, at just age 34. Author Taylor Kingston has examined hundreds of Colle's games, in an effort to understand his skills and style, his strengths and weaknesses, and present an informed, balanced picture of him as a player. Colle emerges as a courageous, audacious, and tenacious fighter, who transcended the limitations his frail body imposed, to battle the giants of his day and topple many of them. 110 of Colle's best, most interesting, and representative games have been given deep and exacting computer analysis. This often revealed important aspects completely overlooked by earlier annotators, and overturned their analytical verdicts. But the computer's iron logic is tempered always with a sympathetic understanding that Colle played, in the best sense, a very human kind of chess. Though not intended as a tutorial on the Colle System, the book of course has many instructive examples of that opening. Additionally, there are several memorial tributes, biographical information about many of Colle's opponents, his known tournament and match record, and all his available tournament crosstables. We invite the reader to get acquainted with this wounded but valiant warrior, whom Hans Kmoch called a chess master with the body of a doomed man and the spirit of an immortal hero. You are invited to explore the fascinating, fighting chess of one of the great tactical masters.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50907080032529,"sku":"GOR012371810","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1949859274.jpg?v=1750835750"},{"product_id":"heroic-tales-book-taylor-kingston-9781888690132","title":"Heroic Tales","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":51332734353681,"sku":"CIN1888690135A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52083326648593,"sku":"GOR013373081","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53257368338705,"sku":"CIN1888690135VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1888690135.jpg?v=1750769316"},{"product_id":"chess-in-the-third-reich-book-taylor-kingston-9781476692609","title":"Chess in the Third Reich","description":"The USSR is famous as the first totalitarian state to promote chess. Less well known is that Nazi Germany was the second. The Third Reich gave chess a tremendous financial and propaganda boost in hopes of making Germany a dominant chess power. Yet this aspect of the Nazi era has received scant attention in later German literature, and even less in English. This book fills that gap.     Using a multitude of German sources, the author has crafted a narrative showing how the Nazis completely remade German chess into a monolithic structure to showcase the supposed cultural and intellectual superiority of the \"master race.\" Many games by German masters are presented--Bogoljubow, Richter, Samisch, Rellstab, Kieninger, Junge, and more--and by others who came under Nazi rule: Alekhine, Keres, Eliskases, et al. Important political figures are featured: Otto Zander, Erhardt Post, Hans Schemm, Josef Goebbels, and especially Hans Frank. Politics affecting chess are detailed, both external (e.g., the annexations of Austria and Czechoslovakia) and internal (rivalry between the Grossdeutscher Schachbund and Kraft durch Freude), as of course are the effects of the war and persecution of Jews.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52615694647569,"sku":"NLS9781476692609","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781476692609.jpg?v=1763805583"},{"product_id":"life-and-games-of-carlos-torre-book-taylor-kingston-9789464201727","title":"The Life and Games of Carlos Torre","description":"This is what’s new in this edition: More accurate and more extensive annotations, computer-assisted. Every game has been examined under Stockfish 14, probably the best analytical engine available for home computers at this time. For the first edition we had only Fritz 4 and 5, which compare to Stockfish like a Model T Ford to a Ferrari, and many games were given no computer examination at all. Thus owners of the first edition will find most annotations here substantially different (and substantially better). However, many general assessments and heuristic notes proved valid and have been retained.  ·       Torre’s own annotations to several games have been unearthed and added. These come from several sources: the American Chess Bulletin, his book of the 1926 Mexican Championship tournament, and his instructional booklet Development of Chess Ability.  ·         Several games have been added. Some, frankly, are Torre losses, which we give in the interest of presenting a more complete, balanced picture of his play. The first edition, to some extent, looked at Torre through rose-colored glasses; here we aim only for untinted clarity. Also added are the six games between players other than Torre that he annotated for the Mexican Championship tournament book (see Chapter VIII).  ·         There are many more diagrams and photographs than in the first edition. Also more thumbnail bios of Torre’s opponents.  ·         More ancillary material about Torre’s life and career: pictures, anecdotes, interesting facts, opinions, bits of trivia etc., drawn from the ACB, the Wiener Schachzeitung, the film Torre x Torre, and other sources.  ·         A 1927 interview with Torre, published in the Yucatán magazine Anahuac, in Chapter III.  ·         Chapter IV, excerpts from the book 64 Variaciones Sobre un Tema de Torre by his friend Germán de la Cruz.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52689185571089,"sku":"NLS9789464201727","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789464201727.jpg?v=1762334723"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-taylor-kingston.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
