It demonstrates that the modern conception of the vampire was born in the crucible of the Enlightenment, embodying a mysterious, Eastern otherness that stood opposed to Western rationality.    \tFrom the Prologue:    \tFrom Original Sin to Eternal Life    \tFor a broad contemporary public, the vampire has become a star, a media sensation from Hollywood. Bestselling authors such as Bram Stoker, Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer continue to fire the imaginations of young and old alike, and bloodsuckers have achieved immortality through films like Dracula, Interview with a Vampireand Twilight. It is no wonder that, in the teenage bedrooms of our globalized world, vampires even steal the show from Harry Potter. They have long since been assigned individual personalities and treated with sympathy. They may possess superhuman powers, but they are also burdened by their immortality and have to learn to come to terms with their craving for blood. Whereas the Southeast European vampire, discovered in the 1730s, underwent an Americanization and domestication in the media landscape of the twentieth century, the creole zombies that first became known through the cheap novels and horror films of the 1920s still continue to serve as brainless horror figures. Do bloodsuckers really exist and should we really be afraid of the dead? These are the questions that I seek to tackle, following the wishes of my daughter, who was ten when I started this project.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51052341231889,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51052343689489,"sku":"NIN9781800734333","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1800734336.jpg?v=1766658610"},{"product_id":"russian-historiography-from-1880-to-1905-book-thomas-m-bohn-9781805395485","title":"Russian Historiography from 1880 to 1905","description":"In Russian historiography, the Moscow School’s paradigm shift from political and legal history to social and economic history was markedly driven by Pavel Miliukov (1859-1943), the late leader of the Constitutional Democrats and foreign minister of the Provisional Government. Russian Historiography from 1880 to 1905 develops a narrative of historical sociology’s advancement through the Moscow School under Miliukov’s influence and provides a window into his decision making as a political figure who based his leadership not on public opinion but on the effectiveness of historical processes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51052434424081,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51052442943761,"sku":"NIN9781805395485","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1805395483.jpg?v=1751060265"},{"product_id":"der-vampir-book-thomas-m-bohn-9783412501808","title":"Der Der Vampir","description":"In nahezu allen Epochen und Kulturen hat es Geschichten von Wiedergangern gegeben, die nach dem Tode ihr Unwesen treiben, oder von unheimlichen Blutsaugern, die nachts aus ihren Grabern steigen und sich ihre Opfer unter den Lebenden suchen. Wie alle Mythen verandern sich auch Vampirgeschichten stetig und passen sich dem Zeitgeist an. So gilt seit dem Erscheinen des Dracula-Romans beispielsweise Transsilvanien, das Land jenseits des Waldes, irrtumlich als die Heimat der Vampire. Thomas Bohn hat sich mit den Fragen, wann und weshalb das ostliche Europa zum Refugium der Blutsauger stilisiert wurde, auf die Suche nach den Ursprungen des Vampirismus gemacht. Der Osteuropahistoriker folgt den Metamorphosen des Vampirs, indem er die Angst der kleinen Leute vor den Seuchenherden aufgeblahter Leichen von der Blutsaugermetapher der Gelehrten unterscheidet. Seine Reise in die Vergangenheit zeigt, dass das Bild des Blutsaugens im lateinischen Abendland lange vor der Entdeckung der Vampire im Donau-Balkan-Raum gepragt wurde. In diesem Sinne rehabilitiert dieses kenntnisreiche Buch den Vampir als einen europaischen Mythos.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52153703399697,"sku":"NGR9783412501808","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783412501808.jpg?v=1757621373"},{"product_id":"transottomanica-osteuropaisch-osmanisch-persische-mobilitatsdynamiken-book-thomas-m-bohn-9783847108863","title":"Transottomanica – Osteuropäisch-osmanisch-persische Mobilitätsdynamiken","description":"The history of the great empires in Eastern Europe and in the Near and Middle East was not only marked by conflicts and competition but also by a futile exchange leading to intensive interconnections. From the 16th until the beginning of the 20th century a large number of social and cultural ties between Poland-Lithuania, the Russian Empire, Ottoman Empire and Persia can be found. Supported by several groups and individuals such as merchants, scholars, diplomates, migrants, militaries or slaves a strong exchange of humans, products and ideas were realised. Therefore, \"transottoman\" interactive relationships evolved during different time periods and different social spaces. The present volume presents not only a methodical research overview but also transregional ties, which have not been the subject of a systematic historical study so far.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52153944998161,"sku":"NGR9783847108863","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783847108863.jpg?v=1757623311"},{"product_id":"heldenstadt-minsk-book-thomas-m-bohn-9783412524494","title":"Heldenstadt Minsk","description":"Das Bild von uber hunderttausend Demonstranten auf den Strassen der Hauptstadt Minsk an den Sonntagen nach der manipulierten Prasidentenwahl vom 9. August 2020 hat sich in den Kopfen der deutschen Offentlichkeit eingepragt. Die weiss-rot-weisse Revolution spielte sich an einem Ort ab, der nach 1945 mit seinen uberdimensionierten Platzen und ausladenden Alleen als Musterstadt des Sozialismus inszeniert worden ist. Aus den Ruinen des Zweiten Weltkriegs ging eine sowjetische Heldenstadt hervor, deren rasantes Wachstum als Minsker Phanomen bezeichnet wurde. Die Eigendynamik dieser Entwicklung hat dafur gesorgt, dass Urbanitat durch Dichte entstanden ist. Von einer Atomisierung der Gesellschaft kann seitdem nicht mehr die Rede sein. Stattdessen definieren sich die Helden in der Stadt wieder neu. Jeder, der wieder eine Reise in die Republik Belarus unternehmen will, benotigt eine Handreichung, um sich uber die Lage vor Ort zu informieren. Die zweite, uberarbeitete Auflage dieses Buches bietet nicht nur ein neues Kapitel uber die Kommentare auf den Stimmzetteln bei den Wahlen zum Obersten Sowjet von 1958 und das Leben des vermeintlichen Kennedy-Attentaters Lee Harvey Oswald in Minsk in den Jahren 1959-1962, sondern auch einen Ausblick uber die stadtebaulichen Entwicklungen bis in die Gegenwart. Daruber hinaus gibt es Straffungen im wissenschaftlichen Apparat sowie im dokumentarischen Anhang. Die erste Auflage erschien 2008 unter dem Buchtitel: Minsk - Musterstadt des Sozialismus: Stadteplanung und Urbanisierung in der Sowjetunion nach 1945.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52154012467473,"sku":"NGR9783412524494","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783412524494.jpg?v=1757672066"},{"product_id":"wisent-wildnis-und-welterbe-book-thomas-m-bohn-9783412509439","title":"Wisent-Wildnis und Welterbe","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52154621952273,"sku":"NGR9783412509439","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783412509439.jpg?v=1757628026"},{"product_id":"vampire-book-thomas-m-bohn-9781789202922","title":"The Vampire","description":"Drawing on a wealth of heretofore neglected sources from multiple languages, this book gives a fascinating account of how vampires-whose various incarnations originally developed within the folk traditions of societies throughout the world-came to be inextricably tied to Eastern Europe in the popular imagination.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53036956582161,"sku":"NIN9781789202922","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781789202922.jpg?v=1768760770"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-thomas-m-bohn.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
