Rather than follow Thomas P. M. Barnett's, Samuel Huntington's and Edward Sa d's top-down approach to the turn-of-the-twenty-first century clash of the West and the Rest, this book takes readers on a three thousand year, grassroots journey through imperialism, linguistics, and applied critical theory to show readers that peace eludes us because we are not all working with the same definition of national security. By adding a Saharan world trade system to the conventional Oriental-Occidental binary of traditional Western Civilization narratives, this book opens a view of Western Europe as a colonized territory of a medieval Roman empire that never died. A parallel imperial reorganization occurred in West Asia. Both systems deployed patriarchy as a gender bomb to implode and conquer matriarchal economies. This clash of European, West Asian and African matriarchal and patriarchal empires was the crucible that produced the United States of America as elder sibling of the family of post-colonial frontier nations. The author argues that patriarchal imperialists of Africa, Western Asia and Western Europe tempted matriarchal men to betray the rights of women in exchange for the benefits of patria potestas. Patriarchal empires then corrupt definitions of fatherhood and dehumanize the conquered men until they suffer from a societal malaise that the author calls patria impotestas. Such economically castrated men revolted in the past and they respond now with twenty-first century mass protests against austerity measures in Europe and protests against Wall Street in the U.S. as well as with acts of terrorism and, tragically, war crimes against women. In this book, the most insecure people are the elite. The author concludes that terrorism, piracy and acts of sabotage against industrial physical plants will continue in Africa, Asia and the West until ordinary people around the world have positive answers to the Primordial Question: Will my family eat today and sleep peacefully through the night?","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49693478093073,"sku":"DVDB000051SH3VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53496613863697,"sku":"CINB000051SH3G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B000051SH3.jpg?v=1750905588"},{"product_id":"game-book-tom-tyler-9781517910198","title":"Game","description":"A playful reflection on animals and video games, and what each can teach us about the other     Video games conjure new worlds for those who play them, human or otherwise: they’ve been played by cats, orangutans, pigs, and penguins, and they let gamers experience life from the perspective of a pet dog, a predator or a prey animal, or even a pathogen. In Game, author Tom Tyler provides the first sustained consideration of video games and animals and demonstrates how thinking about animals and games together can prompt fresh thinking about both.  Game comprises thirteen short essays, each of which examines a particular video game, franchise, aspect of gameplay, or production in which animals are featured, allowing us to reflect on conventional understandings of humans, animals, and the relationships between them. Tyler contemplates the significance of animals who insert themselves into video games, as protagonists, opponents, and brute resources, but also as ciphers, subjects, and subversive guides to new ways of thinking. These animals encourage us to reconsider how we understand games, contesting established ideas about winning and losing, difficulty settings, accessibility, playing badly, virtuality, vitality and vulnerability, and much more.  Written in a playful style, Game draws from a dizzying array of sources, from children’s television, sitcoms, and regional newspapers to medieval fables, Shakespearean tragedy, and Edwardian comedy; from primatology, entomology, and hunting and fishing manuals to theological tracts and philosophical treatises. By examining video games through the lens of animals and animality, Tyler leads us to a greater humility regarding the nature and status of the human creature, and a greater sensitivity in dealings with other animals.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49743644459281,"sku":"NGR9781517910198","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1517910196.jpg?v=1764844579"},{"product_id":"why-people-cooperate-book-tom-r-tyler-9780691158006","title":"Why People Cooperate","description":"Any organization's success depends upon the voluntary cooperation of its members. But what motivates people to cooperate? In Why People Cooperate, Tom Tyler challenges the decades-old notion that individuals within groups are primarily motivated by their self-interest. Instead, he demonstrates that human behaviors are influenced by shared attitudes, values, and identities that reflect social connections rather than material interests. Tyler examines employee cooperation in work organizations, resident cooperation with legal authorities responsible for social order in neighborhoods, and citizen cooperation with governmental authorities in political communities. He demonstrates that the main factors for achieving cooperation are socially driven, rather than instrumentally based on incentives or sanctions. Because of this, social motivations are critical when authorities attempt to secure voluntary cooperation from group members. Tyler also explains that two related aspects of group practices--the use of fair procedures when exercising authority and the belief by group members that authorities are benevolent and sincere--are crucial to the development of the attitudes, values, and identities that underlie cooperation. With widespread implications for the management of organizations, community regulation, and governance, Why People Cooperate illustrates the vital role that voluntary cooperation plays in the long-standing viability of groups.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50022733644049,"sku":"CIN0691158002G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51005734977809,"sku":"NIN9780691158006","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0691158002.jpg?v=1751394331"},{"product_id":"why-people-obey-the-law-book-tom-r-tyler-9780300044034","title":"Why People Obey the Law","description":"\u003cp\u003ePeople obey the law if they believe it's legitimate, not because they fear punishment--this is the startling conclusion of Tom Tyler's classic study. This model is driven by social psychology theory and informed by research findings showing that legitimacy of the police shapes public acceptance of police decisions, willingness to cooperate with the police, and citizen engagement in communities. Police legitimacy is found to be strongly tied to the level of fairness exercised by police authority, i.e. to procedural justice. Taken together these two ideas create an alternative framework for policing that relies upon the policed community's willing acceptance of and cooperation with the law. Studies show that this framework is as effective in lowering crime as the traditional carceral paradigm, an approach that relies on the threat or use of force to motivate compliance. It is also more effective in motivating willing cooperation and in encouraging people to engage in their communities in ways that promote social, economic and political development. We demonstrate that adopting this model benefits police departments and police officers as well as promoting community vitality. At that time, psychologists began to move away from earlier theories that paid little attention to people's subjective understanding of the world. As increasing attention was paid to people's thoughts about their social experiences, it was discovered that people are strongly affected by their assessments of what is just or fair in their dealings with others. This recognition has led to a broad range of studies exploring what people mean by justice and how it influences their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53488337125649,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53488337879313,"sku":"NLS9780367287566","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780367287566.jpg?v=1777675793"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-tom-tyler.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
