The place is so raw and pure, all seal hide and crystalline iceberg. The fishbowl communities at McMurdo Station, South Pole Station, and in the remote field camps intensify relationships, jack all emotion up to a 10. The trick is to get what you need and then get out fast.
At least that's how thirty-year-old Rosie Moore views it as she flies in for her third season on the Ice. She plans to avoid all entanglements, romantic and otherwise, and do her work as a galley cook. But when her flight crash-lands, so do all her plans.
Mikala Wilbo, a brilliant young composer whose heart--and music--have been frozen since the death of her partner, is also on that flight. She has come to the Ice as an artist-in-residence, to write music, but also to secretly check out the astrophysicist father she has never met.
Arriving a few weeks later, Alice Neilson, a graduate student in geology who thinks in charts and equations, is thrilled to leave her dependent mother and begin her career at last. But from the start she is aware that her post-doc advisor, with whom she will work in Antarctica, expects much more from their relationship.
As the three women become increasingly involved in each other's lives, they find themselves deeply transformed by their time on the Ice. Each falls in love. Each faces challenges she never thought she would meet. And ultimately, each finds redemption in a depth and quality of friendship that only the harsh beauty of Antarctica can engender. In this memoir, to which he was making final revisions at the time of his death, Fackenheim looks back on his life, at the profound and painful circumstances that shaped him as a philosopher and a committed Jewish thinker. Interned for three months in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp after Kristallnacht, Fackenheim was released and escaped to Scotland and then to Canada, where he lived in a refugee internment camp before eventually becoming a congregational rabbi and then, for thirty-five years, a professor of philosophy. He recalls here what it meant to be a German Jew in North America, the desperate need to respond to the crisis in Europe and to cope with its overwhelming implications for Jewish identity and community. His second great turning point came in 1967, as he saw Jews threatened with another Holocaust, this time in Israel. This crisis led him on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and ultimately back to Germany, where he continued to grapple with the question, How can the Jewish faith - and the Christian faith - exist after the Holocaust?
peru-s-indian-peoples-and-the-challenge-of-spanish-conquest-book-university-of-wisconsin-press-9780299141844
Peru's Indian Peoples and the Challenge of Spanish Conquest
This is the second edition of Stern's account of the Indians of the Ayachucho region of Peru during the century that followed the Spanish Conquest. In this new study the author offers an exegesis of Pushkin's novel-in-verse, ""Eugene Onegin"", that focuses systematically on Tatiana. A major revisionist reading of one of the central texts of the Russian canon, this approach to ""Eugene Onegin"" should revitalize our understanding of both Pushkin's heroine and the novel in which she appears. The author shows how Tatiana is able to realize her imaginative potential in a context full of risk and constraint. Tatiana emerges as a new literary, psychological and cultural model who enacts precisely those creative tensions and possibilties on which Pushkin himself drew. ""Pushkin's Tatiana"" recovers the erotic energy, self-control and expressivity of Pushkin's most beloved heroine, freeing her from the cliched image of self-sacrificial woman. It concludes with an exploration of Tatiana's subsequent role in the self-presentations of the Russian poets Karolina Pavlova and Marina Tsvetaeva.
Understandable and useful, Managing Lakes and Reservoirs addresses the enormous amount of information on lake management that has developed in the decade since the publication of the manual's first two editions (Lake and Reservoir Restoration Guidance Manual, 1988 and 1990). However, Hill does more than analyze the origins of the Revolution. He examines the ways the seeds of change sown during the revolution, grew into transformative politics in the period following the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
Hill argues that the intellectual heritage of the English Revolution was mixed. While he acknowledges its achievements, he also depicts some of its failings. Consequently, he challenges the view that radical notions faded with the Restoration, suggesting instead, that they continued in pervasive and subtle ways throughout the course of English and American history. The apparent similarity between the England of 1640 and that of 1660 is shown to be illusory. Each period s institutions survived but the social context had changed. In this way, Hill demonstrates how intellectual consequences cannot be separated from the social and economic factors of the nation that produced them. He concludes that historians should turn their attention to the unofficial radical heritage that is less easy to comprehend, though no less important.
This is a highly readable and provocative account by one of the world s foremost historians.

In this work, Andrews provides a history of Brazilian racial inequality from the abolition of slavery in 1888 up to the late 1980s, showing how economic, social and political changes in Brazil during the last 100 years have shaped race relations. By examining government policies, data on employment, mainstream and Afro-Brazilian newspapers, and a variety of other sources, Andrews traces pervasive discrimination against Afro-Brazilians over time. He draws his evidence from the country's most economically important state, Sao Paolo, showing how race relations were affected by its transformation from a plantation-based economy to South America's most urban, industrialized society. The book focuses first on Afro-Brazilians' entry into the agricultural and urban working class after the abolition of slavery. This transition, Andrews argues, was undermined by state policies giving European immigrants preference in hiring. As immigration declined and these policies were overturned in the 1920s, black labourers began to be employed in agriculture and industry on nearly equal terms with whites. Andrews then surveys efforts of blacks to move into the middle class during the 1900s. He finds that informal racial solidarity among middle-class whites has tended to exclude Afro-Brazilians from white-collar work. Andrews traces how discrimination throughout the century led Afro-Brazilians to mobilize, first through the anit-slavery movement of the 1880s, then through such social and political organizations of the 1920s and 1930s as the Brazilian Black Front, and finally through the anti-racism movements of the 1970s and 1980s.
A landmark book in dance education is now back in print, its message as valid today as it was more than fifty years ago
grace-notes-for-a-year-stories-of-hope-humor-and-hubris-from-the-world-of-classi-book-university-of-wisconsin-press-9780971509306
Grace Notes for a Year-Stories of Hope Humor and Hubris from the World of Classical

This irresistible collection of stories is perfect for anyone interested in a fresh perspective on what it means to be a human being who creates art. Grace Notes for a Year sheds light on the fragile and perilous process of inspiration, composition, and performance required to create classical music, whether the final product is a masterpiece or a mess. Delving into the folk history found in Ireland s rich oral traditions, Guy Beiner reveals alternate visions of the Irish past and brings into focus the vernacular histories, folk commemorative practices, and negotiations of memory that have gone largely unnoticed by historians.
Beiner analyzes hundreds of hitherto unstudied historical, literary, and ethnographic sources. Though his focus is on 1798, his work is also a comprehensive study of Irish folk history and grass-roots social memory in Ireland. Investigating how communities in the West of Ireland remembered, well into the mid-twentieth century, an episode in the late eighteenth century, this is a history from below that gives serious attention to the perspectives of those who have been previously ignored or discounted. Beiner brilliantly captures the stories, ceremonies, and other popular traditions through which local communities narrated, remembered, and commemorated the past. Providing an extended analysis of 1.29 art works catalogued in this book, he explicates the gradual development and interrelationship of two styles of Indie miniature painting from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries: one commissioned by the Muslim Mughal rulers and the other by Hindu Rajput princes. Mark Pittenger examines the attempts of radicals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to synthesise the evolutionary ideas of Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer with socialist philosophy, social theory and political practice. In contrast to authors who have shown the influence of Darwinism on conservative and progressive political ideologies, Pittenger establishes that radicals also took scientific ideas seriously and wanted to link the public fascination with evolution to their own cause. Looking at theoretical, political and fiction writing by American socialists, Pittenger identifies debates among factions during two distinct periods: the Gilded Age, during which socialism was a fragmented aggregation of largely non-Marxist individuals and organisations; and the Progressive Era, when socialism coalesced into a distinctly Marxist movement, seeking political and economic power via the American Socialist Party. Many activists of both eras saw evolutionary science as the necessary foundation for socialist theory and practice. Some tried in various ways to incorporate pragmatism, cultural relativism, and rights for blacks and women into their programmes, or worked to democratise scientific knowledge in service of the class struggle. But, as a result of the social pressure on socialists to adopt less radical positions and of their own desires to appeal to a broader constituency, the Marxist call for a workers' revolution receded in importance, replaced by the less painful notion that socialism would arrive as the result of natural and inevitable processes. As socialists broadened their message it became difficult to distinguish it from other types of progressive reform. Pittenger's insights regarding the role of evolutionary science in American socialist thought are an important contribution to understanding why socialism has not had more of an impact on modern American society.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0784/4072/6801/files/0333945298_65d8155e-25c8-4d22-879d-764b76db4cc0.jpg?v=1763222726
social-formation-and-symbolic-landscape-book-university-of-wisconsin-press-9780299155148
Social Formation and Symbolic Landscape
Hailed as a landmark in its field since its first publication in 1984, Denis E. This edition features a new introduction.
Nick Lantz explores the transformative power of tragic and miraculous experiences, through these poems that illuminate near misses of tragedy and transcendence. His gaze is both roving and microscopic—the Challenger explosion, Bigfoot, a love letter written from inside a missile silo, a mother naming and renaming a family's short-lived pets, and a plea for post-9/11 redemption. Lantz never lets his subjects or his readers off the hook, plunging head first into worlds that are both eccentric and familiar, alarming and hopeful.
Founded in 1910, the Forest Products Laboratory was created as an interdisciplinary research facility to solve difficult problems important to sustainable forest management and to a diverse wood products industry. The laboratory—a federal facility located on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus —conducts cutting-edge research that has transformed old industries and created new ones, including lumber production, corrugated containers, recycled paper, production of alcohol from wood, commercial cultivation of shiitake mushrooms, and hundreds of other businesses. This book illustrates what can be accomplished when the American public supports a federal laboratory that works in cooperation with universities, industries, and associations. It includes: concise summaries of 65 significant achievements of the Forest Products Laboratory, with citations to the original research report a comparison of wood utilisation in 1910 and in 2010 examples of the financial impact of the wood products industry on job creation and on the American economy colour photographs throughout illustrating research initiatives and products, forest ecosystems, and the FPL facilities over the course of a century three reprinted reports that provide in detail the history and impact of selected examples of FPL research a list of many of the people who have worked at the FPL during its one-hundred-year history. The curious browser will find this inviting, colourful book full of surprising and remarkable information about the many ways that wood products affect daily life. Scientists, manufacturers, policymakers, and other experts will find it an extraordinary reference and history of significant accomplishments in forest products research.
This text establishes three major milestones in demography. It provides the first English-language demographic profile by a Chinese author of contemporary population trends and family dynamics in China: it constructs a viable mathematical model for extending existing family-status life table models to the three-generational family that is still common in China and the rest of Asia: and it uses that model to compare the dynamics of family structure in China before and after the dramatic drop in fertility that followed the 1979 implementation of stringent family size limits. 20 percent of the world's population lives in the People's Republic of China, yet relatively little has been known about its population structure. The 1982 census of population, the first in China to use sophisticated techniques of data collection and analysis, made it possible to examine family characteristics and their determinants: marriage, widowhood, and divorce: fertility and mortality: and rural-urban, ethic, and regional differences. ""Family Dynamics in China"" draws on both the 1982 census and other demographic data collected during the 1980's. This general analysis provides the framework for a mathematical model that uses its starting point family-status life table models, developed by Bongaarts and others, that simultaneously include multiple variables such as age, marital status, parity, and fecundity. These models have been based upon the nuclear family and have assumed tht adult children necessarily leave theri parents' homes at marriage. Yet the 1982 Chinese census indicated that nearly 20 percent of all Chinese families contained three or more generations. By extending existing models to accommodate the multigenerational family. Yeng Yi has made an important methodological advance that is applicable to many other non-Western societies. In the last part of ""Family Dynamics in China"", this new model is systematically applied to analyzing the dramatic decline in fertility in China since 1979. Yeng Yi compares conditions from 1950 to 1970 with those now unfolding. What are the effects of the decline in fertility upon family size and structure, and upon the family life course of women, in particular?. How many years will be spent caring for children, how many for the elderly parents: what is the overlap-the ""period of overload"" when families may be caring for both?. As family size diminishes, for example, the proportion of elderly, particularly women, who have no surviving children is risking, especially in the cities. What are the likely social consequences of this in a society where the multigenerational family remains the primary social support system for the elderly?.
https://www.worldofbooks.com/en-gb/collections/author-books-by-university-of-wisconsin-press.oembed?page=2
