It analyzes the evidence from the view of operational doctrine and applies an in-depth look at the basic tenets of R.A.F. air policing campaigns. It seeks to answer the question: to what doctrine did air commanders subscribe? It further analyzes the development of air policing tactical doctrine throughout the interwar period. It summarizes the conclusions and then offers this insight as it may apply to contemporary operations. This work seeks to provide an insightful view of the British experience and attempts to explain what has never been explained before, namely .how. air policing worked from the vantage point of those who conducted it. By tracing the R.A.F. operations during the more significant air policing examples and looking at the indigenous response, it describes the actual operational mechanism at work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51022833025297,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51022834925841,"sku":"NIN9781298474032","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1298474035.jpg?v=1751082622"},{"product_id":"air-warfare-book-us-air-force-9781490511252","title":"Air Warfare","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51029962883345,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51029965111569,"sku":"NIN9781490511252","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1490511253.jpg?v=1751116530"},{"product_id":"aerospace-strategy-for-the-aerospace-nation-book-us-air-force-9781288300471","title":"Aerospace Strategy for the Aerospace Nation","description":"This study analyzes the need for a national aerospace strategy that encompasses the two aspects of aerospace power: the aerospace industry and military aerospace. Sea mines--explosive underwater devices that damaged, sank, or deterred ships--were weapons that had difficulty gaining the same acceptance as guns, bombs, and torpedoes. Yet, with time, a small number of aerial mining advocates influenced wartime commanders to ensure the growth of minelaying doctrine, equipment development, and combat experience. Ultimately, aerial minelaying became one of the most successful AF maritime missions of the war and signalled an important role in sea control for the future U.S. Air Force. The history of mine warfare spanned more than two hundred years, but as an offensive strategy matured only in the twentieth century, hastened by submarine and aircraft delivery. In World War I, the Luftwaffe was first to lay mines from the air and first to field many of the weapon's innovations. The Royal Air Force mounted a significant minelaylng effort in Europe and helped the United States advance its mining in the Pacific. Though slow to start, aerial minelaying in Japan's Outer Zone by the air forces of Britain, Australia, and the United States accomplished a worthwhile attrition of Japanese shipping. Finally, in 1945, Operation Starvation, the aerial mining of Japan's home islands by AF B-29s, made a dramatic contribution to the blockade of Japan and mines sunk more ships than allied submarines in the war\/s final months.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52747873714449,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52747873878289,"sku":"NIN9781296473259","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781296473259.jpg?v=1763533948"},{"product_id":"who-has-the-puck-book-us-air-force-9781298044525","title":"Who Has the Puck?","description":"This is a curated and comprehensive collection of the most important works covering matters related to national security, diplomacy, defense, war, strategy, and tactics. The author presents an overview of the various forms of WMD: chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons. The objective is to review the characteristics of both UAVs and WMD to determine if they are capable of being used together as an effective weapon. The result indicates that there is great potential for the use of UAVs as delivery systems for WMD, particularly by developing nations and nonstate actors such as terrorist groups who may not have the technical capability to employ other means. The potential exists for the proliferation of both UAVs and WMD to become widespread and thus a major security concern. There is no clear solution to this problem; however, actions including bringing the issue to the forefront, strengthening export and arms controls, deterrence, and defense will have a synergistic effect that will help mitigate this threat.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52777865412881,"sku":"NIN9781249328346","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249328346.jpg?v=1763918617"},{"product_id":"aerospace-strategy-for-the-aerospace-nation-book-us-air-force-9781249328315","title":"Aerospace Strategy for the Aerospace Nation","description":"This study analyzes the need for a national aerospace strategy that encompasses the two aspects of aerospace power: the aerospace industry and military aerospace. In that time we have learned some lessons. Unfortunately, we continue to repeat many of the same mistakes. Sometimes we have forgotten hard-learned lessons, and some times we never learned from our earlier experiences. The Dominican Republic deployment of 1965-66 and recent experiences under the Unified Task Force, Somalia (UNITAF) and United Nations Operations, Somalia I (UNOSOM I) are representative peace enforcement operations. This paper will examine which lessons we learned from these operations, which lessons we learned and lost, and which lessons we seemingly ignored. Focusing on command and control, the issues can be loosely grouped into categories of force and command structure, political impacts, and interoperability. In force and command structure, the US has still not come to grips with the difficulties of operating in a multinational coalition under international (e.g. UN) control. The problems of dual lines of control and Byzantine command structures plagued both the Dominican and Somalia operations. The ability to integrate humanitarian relief and nation-building forces effectively into the overall structure seems to have deteriorated rather than improved. Stand-by, earmarked forces, combined exercises (including non-military agencies), and stronger civil-military integration cells could help mitigate difficulties, but need to be pursued more vigorously. Within the area of political impacts on peace enforcement operations, the subject of prisoners is still a difficult area with little progress in the last 25 years. Nations have also continued to place political constraints on their forces limiting them both geographically and operationally. In both cases, these problems can not be eliminated, but must be compensated for. Rules of en-gagement also affect operations, and some progress has been made in this area.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53036252954897,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53036253249809,"sku":"NIN9781249327769","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249327769.jpg?v=1768753466"},{"product_id":"special-operations-forces-and-unmanned-aerial-vehicles-book-us-air-force-9781025078748","title":"Special Operations Forces and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53109330805009,"sku":"NIN9781025078748","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781025078748.jpg?v=1770566826"},{"product_id":"revenge-of-europe-book-us-air-force-9781249326205","title":"The Revenge of Europe","description":"The collapse of the Soviet Union, the reunification of Germany, and the emergence of the European Union (EU) have all raised questions regarding the United States' transatlantic relationship and the subsequent role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The author takes a brief look at past US-European relations and provides an enlightening and provocative analysis of the current state of affairs. Recent tensions in the relationship, he concludes, are a result of the EU's growing role as a state actor in the international system. Policy differences between the United States and the EU are merely symptoms of the changes resulting from the EU's new role. The author proposes a tentative typology of alliances and concludes that the United States and the EU have a co-dependent relationship, with the United States subsidizing the EU's pursuit of policies that, whether by accident or design, undermine US interests. The author calls for a reformulation of the alliance that allows both the United States and the European Union to pursue their own interests while forcing the EU to take responsibility for its own defense.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53109483503889,"sku":"NIN9781249326205","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249326205.jpg?v=1770568978"},{"product_id":"john-boyd-and-john-warden-book-us-air-force-9781249327578","title":"John Boyd and John Warden","description":"This is a curated and comprehensive collection of the most important works covering matters related to national security, diplomacy, defense, war, strategy, and tactics. They lack capacity, in both aggregate data rate and the number of users they can support. . . . Furthermore, the life expectancies of the existing space segments and much of their associated terminal and management segments do not extend beyond the 2010-2015 time frame. These shortfalls and the military's insatiable demand for bandwidth led to the creation of the Department of Defense's (DOD) TSAT. TSAT's five-satellite constellation will be capable of delivering advanced capabilities to the war fighter via 8,000 radio frequency (RF) links and between 20 and 50 laser communication (lasercom) links. These advanced capabilities will deliver significant communications bandwidth by incorporating advanced laser and RF technologies, softwareconfigurable terminals, packet switching, network management, and interface standards. All of these technologies will rely on Internet protocol (IP) interoperability as the enabling technology for connecting the war fighter. The thesis of this paper is that the advanced capabilities provided by TSAT are limited and will not be sufficient to serve the ground-based portion of the communications network supporting network-centric warfare (NCW). To validate this proposition, this study will start by identifying space-based systems that will enable NCW, discuss the requirements for ground-based NCW, and finally determine the combination of spaced-based systems sufficient to deliver advanced capabilities to the war fighter.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251796271377,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251796533521,"sku":"NIN9781249326526","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249326526.jpg?v=1773592345"},{"product_id":"green-and-blue-in-the-wild-blue-book-us-air-force-9781249327653","title":"Green and Blue in the Wild Blue","description":"Major Hamilton examines the nature and degree of the convergence of the United States Army and Air Force airpower thinking and doctrine since the Vietnam War. To answer this question, the study begins by exploring time in the theory of war with an emphasis on time as a fourth dimension that provides a distinct perspective on warfare. With concepts gleaned from theory, this study analyzes the Arab-Israeli War of 1967, the Falklands War, and the Gulf War to determine the role airpower played in overcoming time conflicts and achieving political-military congruence. The study concludes that a time-based strategy was the mechanism through which airpower worked to resolve time-induced tensions between political and military imperatives. A time-based strategy is defined as one in which time is a paramount or extremely significant consideration. Such a strategy seeks to overcome time-induced tensions and achieve political-military congruence by employing forces and forms of military power with an appreciation of their abilities to contribute to this resolution and congruence. A time-based strategy also weighs operational risks and benefits with the goal of balancing them to achieve the greatest time benefit at the lowest risk. In addition to revealing a time-based strategy as the mechanism for overcoming time conflicts between political and military imperatives, the evidence also points to the prominence of airpower's role in that strategy. This link between time-based strategies and airpower has important implications for both the airpower theorist and the airpower strategist.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251797385489,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251797614865,"sku":"NIN9781249328025","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249328025.jpg?v=1773592352"},{"product_id":"awpd-42-to-instant-thunder-book-us-air-force-9781249327349","title":"AWPD-42 to Instant Thunder","description":"Major Cody analyzes the air war plans in World War I and the Persian Gulf War. One particular area of contention has been close air support (CAS).The two primary issues related to CAS are its command and control and responsiveness. Soldiers have argued that ground commanders should control their own aircraft, because ownership assures that airpower directly responds to their needs. Airmen have maintained that airpower should be centralized under a single air commander to allow for its flexible theater wide employment. During World War I, Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm, ground commanders demanded greater influence over airpower employment. Concurrently, the Air Force disagreed with the Navy and Marine Corps over centralized versus decentralized control of air assets. These two issues of command and control and responsiveness are embodied in the process of apportioning and allocating CAS. In all conflicts since World War I, the United States has had the luxury of an overabundance of air assets. Despite a facade of centralization, airpower was parceled out to fill nearly everyone's needs. This avoided the need for any difficult choices. This study follows the history of CAS since World War I to examine how it has been apportioned and allocated in the past. It then examines the current joint air operations process. It is the contention of this study that the current system, rooted in its historical past, does not fully employ CAS to its optimum potential. The historical view of CAS has been as a tactical measure, with limited localized effects. However, properly integrated and coequal with the ground scheme of maneuver, it can have operational level effects. This study examines two theories of the use of CAS at the operational level and then recommends changes to the view of CAS and the process for its apportionment and allocation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251798630673,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251798958353,"sku":"NIN9781249327615","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249327615.jpg?v=1773592360"},{"product_id":"time-critical-targeting-book-us-air-force-9781249327707","title":"Time-Critical Targeting","description":"Experiences in Operations Desert Storm and Allied Force highlighted a significant weakness in the USAF's ability to engage time-critical targets. The weakness stems from airpower's inability to employ force quickly and kill an emerging target before it disappears back into hiding. USAF's engagement sequence, called the kill chain, is not fast enough to detect, locate, identify, and engage the target. Experience shows that the enemy has used this method of emerging, engaging, and dispersing since the beginning of time, and because it is still effective, the enemy has little reason to change. To help solve this difficulty, this study introduces and investigates two methods--reactive and preemptive--and determines how they might solve the problem in 2010. Evidence suggests that the USAF is attempting to solve the problem by using the reactive approach, which first detects a target with an intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platform and tasks a loitering-strike platform to kill it.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251799744785,"sku":"NIN9781249327707","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249327707.jpg?v=1773592366"},{"product_id":"diffusion-of-military-technologies-to-foreign-nations-book-us-air-force-9781249327899","title":"The Diffusion of Military Technologies to Foreign Nations","description":"The purpose of this work is to recommend the United States government maintain the defense technological and industrial base (DTIB) by aggressively supporting the US defense industry in the arms transfer process. Ironically, this recommendation is contrary to the position held at the onset of this research and analysis effort. It is written for the micro-level reader (the young pilot, tank operator, etc.), the macro-level reader (US government staffers and above in the State and Defense Departments), and senior government officials (Generals, Congressmen, and Senators) to inform and enhance their ability to understand the DTIB and how arms transfers can help in its preservation. To accomplish this purpose, this paper has three aims. First, this paper recognizes that the DTIB requires preservation. With the end of the Cold War and the continuing drawdown of US military forces and equipment, the DTIB is deteriorating. In this authors view, this decline can only be arrested with the help of the US government. Second, it describes arms transfers as an instrument of foreign policy based on US national security interests and the foreign policy challenges of the day. The history of arms transfers is broken down into four periods, between 1945 and the present, to demonstrate this assertion. It predicts arms transfers will continue to be an instrument of foreign policy and can be used to enhance our DTIB.Third, it focuses on the current arms transfer decisionmaking process and represents it as a Labyrinth of Control. This section of the paper demonstrates the maze of controls used to adequately ensure that US military technologies are not diffused to foreign nations. A common, but misguided, view is that the US is selling its technological superiority through arms sales.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251799449873,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251799712017,"sku":"NIN9781249327899","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249327899.jpg?v=1773592365"},{"product_id":"transformation-trinity-book-us-air-force-9781249327677","title":"The Transformation Trinity","description":"Major McClintock develops a generalized model for United States military transformations in peacetime. In late 1958 Air Force Chief of Staff Thomas D. White first evoked the term aerospace to describe to the nation how America's airmen perceived their operational environment. 'Air and space are not two separate media to be divided by a line and to be readily separated into two distinct categories; they are in truth a single indivisible field of operations.' Unfortunately, also by the end of 1958, organizational architecture, national legislation, and national policy were in place to indicate that an alternative paradigm would take precedence over that of the Air Force. This study chronologically traces the historical development of the aerospace concept, from its initial inception in 1944 as it was embodied in the far-reaching vision of Gen. Henry H. 'Hap' Arnold, until its public appearance in 1958. This study also uncovers reasons why airmen came to see their primary area of responsibility differently than the rest of the nation and why their aerospace concept failed to win bureaucratic support. By tracing the aerospace concept's technological and intellectual development against a contextual backdrop of geopolitics, national security strategy, national space policy, interservice competition, and internal tensions within the Air Force, this paper offers historical lessons learned for today's planners seeking to move the Air Force toward an aerospace force.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251800105233,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251800301841,"sku":"NIN9781249327509","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249327509.jpg?v=1773592372"},{"product_id":"de-ranged-book-us-air-force-9781249327332","title":"De-Ranged","description":"This is a story of long-range airpower, from General Henry Hap Arnold's vision of a Global Mission to the Global Strike Task Force and Expeditionary Air Forces of the year 2001. It examines global power from its origins as Strategic Air Command built a fleet of bombers and tankers to meet the needs of the global nuclear deterrent policy of the Cold War. With the end of the Cold War and the changes in force structure that followed, the USAF soon lost its historical roots in global power. This evolution is traced through the studies and commissions of the 1990s established to determine the force structure for the 21st century. The assumptions that were made to develop a force focused on expeditionary short-range airpower to project global power are established and then examined with four case studies in the application of airpower over long-range. Operation NICKEL GRAS, the US airlift to Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the British airpower experience in the Falkland Island War with its Vulcan BLACK BUCK missions, Operation ELDORADO CANYON, and Operation DESERT STRIKE are used to provide evidence to support and refute the assumptions made during the 1990s to structure the USAF force structure around short-range expeditionary forces with the intention of forward deploying them in a crisis. These case studies are evaluated and then recommendations are offered for the force structure of the 21st century to ensure an adequate global power force capable of executing a global power strategy. The conclusions of this work do not make recommendations for long or short-range airpower, but rather offer recommendations for methods to enable those forces in the future with a sturdy in-flight refueling force capable of supporting long-range missions free from the entanglements of foreign support and reliance on forward basing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251800465681,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251800695057,"sku":"NIN9781249327332","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249327332.jpg?v=1773592374"},{"product_id":"higher-eyes-in-the-sky-book-us-air-force-9781249327882","title":"Higher Eyes in the Sky","description":"During the past few years, Air Force leaders have begun to emphasize space operations. Global Engagement states that we will eventually transition from an Air and Space Force into a Space and Air Force and various leaders have opined that that air and space are seamless. Air Force Chief-of-Staff General Fogleman introduced the concept that in the future, we will be able to find, fix, target, track, and engage (F2T2E) any target, anywhere on the earth. In order to actually accomplish F2T2E, the functions currently performed by the E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) and the E-8 Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS) will need to migrate to space-based platforms. This thesis explores how such a migration would occur. Before examining space operations, the historical military need for moving target indicators (MTI) is examined, tracing the evolution from hot air balloons to our current AWACS and JSTARS aircraft.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251802104081,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53251802300689,"sku":"NIN9781249327882","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249327882.jpg?v=1773592391"},{"product_id":"women-and-military-service-book-us-air-force-9781249172871","title":"Women and Military Service","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53339279884561,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53339280113937,"sku":"NIN9781249172871","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249172871.jpg?v=1774400268"},{"product_id":"command-dysfunction-book-us-air-force-9781249327929","title":"Command Dysfunction","description":"This paper analyzes the factors and conditions of command dysfunction from the cognitive, or mental, perspective of command and control warfare (C2W). The author examines the limitations of rational decision making and the tension that exists between rational and intuitive processes. Next, the paper examines the vulnerabilities of rational and intuitive processes in order to build a cognitive warfare framework. The framework consists of three categories: the command baseline, stressors, and deception. The stressor and deception categories act on the command baseline. The analysis also suggests that there are a number of possible interactions that exist between the stressor and deception categories. The paper then uses the framework to analyze evidence of command dysfunction in three historical campaigns. The historical analyses study the German command during the Normandy invasion, the Allied command during the first week of the Battle of the Bulge, and the Israeli command during the first half of the Arab-Israeli October 1973 War. In addition to showing that there are interactions between stressors and deception, the analyses highlight the importance of understanding the adversary's command baseline. The paper concludes that effective C2W is not so much what is done to an adversary's command, but rather what he does to himself, perhaps with a little help.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53352072970513,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53352073167121,"sku":"NIN9781249327929","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249327929.jpg?v=1774719272"},{"product_id":"paradigm-lost-book-us-air-force-9781249326779","title":"Paradigm Lost","description":"This study analyzes the theater airlift implications for the United States Army's new vision for land warfare in the 21st century, the Army After Next (AN). The AN planners envision a lighter, leaner, and more lethal force that will rely heavily on information dominance to maximize combat effectiveness throughout the projected nonlinear battlespace. This new vision requires a change in the role of theater airlift. This thesis addresses the question, What theater airlift capabilities will be critical to support the Army After Next, and which emerging systems provide the best path to achieve such capabilities? This paper provides a brief explanation of the fundamental elements of the AN concept, and their implications for future airlift. From that analysis, the thesis identifies four key capabilities that will be required of theater airlift at unprecedented levels: 1) austere operations, 2) cargo handling capability, 3) situational awareness, and 4) defensive systems. After describing current theater airlift capabilities, the paper provides some alternative paths to acquire the necessary airlift capabilities. The following conclusions were among those developed through analysis. Based on the data available, the tilt wing concept provides the best platform to meet AN lift\/airfield requirements. Also, austere operations will require a stand-off capability for evaluating the suitability of opportune landing sites. Autonomous, efficient cargo handling systems embedded in the design of the aircraft will not only enhance flexibility but also increase survivability in hostile environments.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53354829938961,"sku":"NIN9781249326779","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249326779.jpg?v=1774846444"},{"product_id":"enhancement-of-the-civil-reserve-air-fleet-book-us-air-force-9781249328285","title":"Enhancement of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet","description":"US military airlift policy strives to maximize the available wartime reserve of airlift for a given investment. Unfortunately, the capacity of America's strategic airlift system has consistently fallen short of the proposed wartime requirements and remains so today. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Military Airlift Command's attempts to reduce the airlift deficit included a CRAF Enhancement Program that subsidized the conversion of CRAF jumbo aircraft into cargoconvertibles. Although several aircraft were modified, the program was allowed to die during the 1980s. However, this option needs to be re-examined since Air Mobility Command's efforts to close the contemporary airlift gap-such as C-17 procurement, the C-141 Service Life Extension Program, and the outright purchase and operation of a fleet of commercial cargo aircraft-are expensive and problem-ridden. This study determines if a revival of the CRAF Enhancement Program is feasible and if it could be developed into a viable program for addressing AMC's airlift shortfall problem. To achieve this goal, the study analyzes the failure of the first CRAF Enhancement Program to determine if the barriers to its success were surmountable and if these same barriers might impede the success of a future program. The study determines that the first Enhancement Program failed because MAC was unable to develop an incentive plan that was attractive enough to ensure airline participation, yet be persuasive enough to elicit the required support and funding from Congress.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53354830135569,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53354830299409,"sku":"NIN9781249328285","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249328285.jpg?v=1774846447"},{"product_id":"waste-to-watts-and-water-book-us-air-force-9781249414698","title":"Waste to Watts and Water","description":"Looking to the national security environment in 2030, Major Birch's research explores one technology-the microbial fuel cell (MFC)-that gives life to self-contained facilities decoupled from vulnerable supply lines and infrastructure networks. After a successful demonstration of airpower's effectiveness in Somaliland, the British adopted and implemented an air control strategy in Mesopotamia, Transjordan, Palestine, and Aden. Until 1936 air control was the military strategy for those areas. Air control changed the central notion of military strategy in that theater from a surface-based to an aerial-based scheme. The Royal Air Force (RAF) enjoyed success and encountered failure when it employed the air control strategy under various conditions. After World War I, almost 20 years after the RAF abandoned air control, the United States Air Force (USAF) explored the control concept as a potential deterrent strategy. Dubbed Project Control, the USAF ultimately declined the study's main tenets but implemented elements of its proposals. Thereafter, air control remained a dormant design until the 1990-91 Persian Gulf War. There elements of the control strategy reemerged as a common thread in the conduct of the air war. This analysis of air control examines all three conceptual frameworks. By assessing the validity of the RAF and USAF models, this study finds that air control provides political and military leaders a military strategy for a smaller defense establishment. It also identifies shortcomings and advises caution when choosing the escalatory pattern of the control model.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53362073960721,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53362074091793,"sku":"NIN9781249415459","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249415459.jpg?v=1774977262"},{"product_id":"comparative-analysis-of-internal-and-external-solutions-to-provide-air-combat-ma-book-us-air-force-9781249835523","title":"A Comparative Analysis of Internal and External Solutions to Provide Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation Functionality","description":"Major Panarisi summarizes the development of current and proposed family of Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation (ACMI) systems-considered the gold standard of training mission enhancements-and presents the capabilities each system provides. He uses the Kadena Interim Training System as a suitable case study to compare requirements of current ACMI features to the capabilities available using internal components. He contends that internal systems can be installed long before the next generation system will be operational. Thus, Major Panarisi proposes alternatives that offer the potential to save millions of dollars in operating costs and which allow ACMI training on every mission independent of ground-based equipment and external stores.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53366395633937,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53366395994385,"sku":"NIN9781249835523","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781249835523.jpg?v=1775092699"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-us-air-force.oembed?page=3","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
