This new volume is made up of 17 sections comprising more than 70 articles which makes it the most comprehensive text of its kind available anywhere. Each of the 17 sections has a short introduction which provide the context for the general theme and for the essays which follow. The ambitiously wide range of coverage reflects the main themes of the most recent research and publication. The essays cover the sociology and economics of slavery, illustrating the dynamic relations between modes of production and social life. But it is the superstructure of slave systems that is the focus of a number of essays highlighting the debate on race and colour relations, health and morality, religion, recreational culture, women, family organization and kinship patterns. The selection also focuses on maturing anti-slavery consciousness and politics which are addressed as part of the discourse on social control and resistance. This theme provides part of the general background to investigations of the disintegration of the slave system from the Haitian Revolution to Spanish Caribbean emancipation towards the end of the 19th century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49587201671441,"sku":"GOR008535232","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51067909669137,"sku":"NIN9789768123619","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52425425846545,"sku":"NLS9789768123619","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9768123613.jpg?v=1750839953"},{"product_id":"questioning-creole-book-verene-shepherd-9789766370398","title":"Questioning Creole","description":"In his seminal work, The Development of Creole Society in Jamaica, Kamau Brathwaite attempted to expose the essential \"\"Jamaican\"\" nature of the identity that developed at the interstices between the cultures of Europe and Africa. He took the concept of Creole society beyond mere description by articulating s clear and poetically engaging intellectual model of the process of cultural change that defines, and distinguishes, Creole societies - a process which he termed \"\"creolisation\"\". The publication of this pathbreaking work has given rise to vigorous polemics among scholars who have expanded the debate beyond the Caribbean. Indeed, the creolisation discourse has been widely incorporated into scholarship on both sides of the Atlantic, and resonates in diverse fields of Atlantic World Studies, spreading beyond the confines of the discipline of history. This interdisciplinary trend is demonstrated in this volume, primarily a tribute to Brathwaite, with contributions from Carolyn Allen, Hilary McD. Beckles, O. Nigel Bolland, Carolyn Cooper, Lorna Goodison, Veronica Gregg, Percy C. Hintzen, Verene A. In this biography, Verene Shepherd traces Mair’s evolving ideology through her roles as professional historian, wife, mother, mentor, diplomat, national and international civil servant, legislator, and women’s rights activist. Mair’s tireless commitment to the principles of justice and equality for women guided her work and she particularly sought to centre women of the Global South in the development agenda.  The accounts of Mair’s myriad and often uncredited contributions at the University of the West Indies, the United Nations, and as a senator in the Government of Jamaica are enhanced by previously unpublished extracts from her notes and personal papers and interviews with her friends and colleagues. Shepherd weaves these sources together to give us a thought-provoking study of the evolution of a rebel woman.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51067377811729,"sku":"NIN9789766407704","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9766407703.jpg?v=1762598545"},{"product_id":"i-want-to-disturb-my-neighbour-book-verene-shepherd-9789766372552","title":"I Want to Disturb My Neighbour","description":"This collection of 21 papers, selected from presentations internationally, reflect the depth and focus of Professor Shepherd's work over the past ten years, in the areas of conquest and colonialization, slavery and anti-slavery, post-slavery society, the project of decolonialization and the role of gender.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51067839709457,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51067840889105,"sku":"NIN9789766372552","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51574572450065,"sku":"GOR014333402","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52136022933777,"sku":"NLS9789766372552","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9766372551.jpg?v=1751385391"},{"product_id":"livestock-sugar-and-slavery-book-verene-shepherd-9789766372569","title":"Livestock, Sugar and Slavery","description":"The economic and social history of Jamaica has been dominated by a tradition of scholarship that has tended to focus on the study of the ruling sugar planter elite – the `sugarocracy’- considered more socially significant than non-sugar producers. Indeed, non-sugar producers. Indeed, non-sugar producing units have been regarded as representing a `divergent pattern’ of social and economic development. Livestock, Sugar and Slavery broadens the economic and social history of Jamaica by turning the spotlight on those involved in raising livestock rather than sugar cane in colonial Jamaica. Devoted primarily to the slavery era, the book examines the evolution and expansion of the pen-keeping industry, the role and status of the pen-keepers and the experiences of enslaved labourers on pens. Above all, the book argues that the relationship between those who raised livestock and those who raised sugar cane, while symbiotic in one sense, was also conflict-ridden in another. Pens, though emerging in the pre-sugar era when they had an independent economic dynamic, had developed into virtual adjuncts of the sugar industry by the 18th and 19th centuries, leading to contests between sugar proprietors and pen-keepers over land, boundaries, enslaved labourers, and social and political status. This comparative study of pen-keepers and sugar planters also demonstrates that the `ranking game’ was intensely practised in the age of modernity.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51067848753425,"sku":"NIN9789766372569","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51371967217937,"sku":"GOR014243554","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52565315748113,"sku":"NLS9789766372569","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/976637256X.jpg?v=1750937292"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/author-books-by-verene-shepherd.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
