The thirteen papers, by researchers from Britain and across Europe, represent a range of research orientations within Applied Linguistics that connect in different ways with issues in culture and identity. Two plenary addresses from the conference, by Roz Ivanic and Srikant Sarangi, explore the themes of identity and culture in contexts of learning and of work. Papers addressing language planning and policy issues present recent analyses of francophone identity in Canada and Sami identity in Finland. The issues of culture and identity in writing are explored in different papers from the perspective of identity construction in academic writing, discipline cultures in higher education contexts, the consequences of these for interdisciplinary writers, and how writers construct audience identity though the linguistic choices they make. Empirical studies of language learning and teaching are also represented, with papers on Processing Instruction and Intercultural Pragmatics. The themes of identity and culture in these papers connect a range of sub-disciplines within Applied Linguistics, and also connect knowledge building in Applied Linguistics with pervasive themes in research across the social sciences, into the ways people as individuals and in communities understand, shape and represent their experiences of learning and work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49558236791057,"sku":"GOR005974564","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50713832554769,"sku":"GOR014045391","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53360654909713,"sku":"GOR009874124","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1845532198.jpg?v=1751026874"},{"product_id":"applied-linguistics-at-the-interface-book-british-association-for-applie-9781904768579","title":"Applied Linguistics at the Interface","description":"Selection of papers from the 2003 Conference of the British Association of Applied Linguistics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49599308529937,"sku":"GOR005395987","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1904768571.jpg?v=1751028776"},{"product_id":"unity-and-diversity-in-language-use-book-kristyan-miller-9780826478740","title":"Unity and Diversity in Language Use","description":"The papers in this collection, drawn from the 34th Annual Conference of the British Association for Applied Lunguistics, reflect a number of different perspecitves within the field of applied linguistics at the start of the twenty-first century. While addressing the theme of unity and diversity, each paper prompts critical reflection on tensions within the descipline between stability and change, consensus and controversy, similiarity and variation. The interpretation of languge use is broad and varied, taking both macro- and micro-perspectives. Topics address range from issues of global communication in a world of shifting demographics and technological advances to analyses of specific contexts of interaction, both professional and personal. Contexts of language use frequently coincide with settings of language acquisition, both within and beyond the language classroom, and this opens up discussion of the focus, scope and appropriateness of research stances in applied linguistics and practices in language pedagogy.Furthermore, variation is considered from a number of social-cultural, gender-related, linguistic and discourse perspectives, calling into question terminology, definitions and the nature of evidence at the heart of applied linguistics theory and practice. Foundational questions of the following kind form the backbone of the volume: 'Is applied linguistics applied enough?'; 'Can applied linguists go where no linguists have been before?'; 'Do applied linguists belong to one community of practice or do they constitute a community of communities?'; 'On a cost-benefit scale, how can applied linguists gain communality across interdisciplinary initiatives while not losing their disciplinary autonomy?'. With a judicious combination of empirical, theoretical and policy-oriented studies, the volume takes a close, hard look at the present and future challenges. This is summed up in a call to arms for applied linguistics to become more practically relevant and reflexively grounded not only in addressing real world problems, but also in doing so collaboratively in a sustained way with practitioners involved. Language across Boundaries is a selection of papers from the millennium conference of the British Association of Applied Linguistics. The thirteen papers are written by applied linguists, from Britain, mainland Europe, the USA, Australia and Singapore, working in a variety of sub-disciplines of the field. The 'boundaries' of the title have been widely interpreted and the book reflects a spectrum of research, ranging from work on the linguistic repercussions of individual and group identity boundaries to work dealing with ways of crossing national and cultural boundaries through language learning and language mediation in the form of translation. Included in the volumes are the plenary papers given by Jennifer Coates, well known for her work on language and gender, on the expression of alternative masculinities; and by Bencie Woll, holder of the first chair of Sign Language and Deaf Studies in the UK, on the insights to be gained from sign language in exploring language, culture and identity. Each of these papers takes a different approach to the conference theme of \"evaluation\". The first two papers, from invited key-note speakers, take the opportunity that an anniversary offers for reviewing the present state of Applied Linguistics and the relationship between theory and practice which is fundamental to the discipline. But both also address the theme in relation to specific issues: linguists' responses to evaluative and prescriptive interests in language expressed by many non-linguists, and methods of evaluating the competence of children with specific language impairment. Other papers continue the theme: they consider the evaluation of aspects of the language curriculum, attitudes to language varieties, speaker evaluations as displayed in narratives, inexperienced writers' evaluations of their own texts, language assessment and the language of advertisements. Taken together the collection illustrates something of the breadth and diversity of research which Applied Linguistics in Britain now embraces, and suggests that BAAL can look forward to a further 25 years of rewarding and varied work.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52848586162449,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52848586424593,"sku":"NLS9780585071831","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780585071831.jpg?v=1764840292"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/british-studies-in-applied-linguistics-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
